I got into the MSc Health Sciences program at SFU with a *lowwww* 3.0 GPA + got 19k funding (Woot!).

BUT...I got a job as an RA at UBC full time last month with a prof in Health Sciences ? Should I decline my SFU offer and work a year, or take the SFU offer, or defer???? I seriously DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DOOOOOOO

I would choose the job and defer SFU. Jobs are hard to get but with your one year experience as a RA in UBC, you would be opening up so many doors of opportunities. School will always be there!!

Thanks @minniexo_ for your reply. I think that's the move..I'm so conflicted as my supervisor is dope, and I feel almost guilty for declining. Tough choices.

Does anyone know when the deadline to accept at McGill is?

Also anyone know when UofT MPH Epi offers are expected to go out?

I'm accepted for UBC's MPH, but still waiting to hear back from UofT and McGill.

the deadline to accept McGill (for my offer, at least) is March 31, although i would assume that they might have later deadlines if offers come out in the next little while since i received mine more than a week ago!!

and i think someone here posted an email reply they received where uoft said epi offers would come out in early to mid-april or something? i'm not super sure though tbh, and i'm also nervously waiting to hear back from them ?

Honestly I’m waiting for it too. I have only applied to uottawa?

Lol... I knowwww. I actually have an offer from a school in the US with an April 15th deadline so I’m really hoping uOttawa comes through before then... not that I’ve decided where I’m going yet but I hate not knowing.

Program – I'm in my last year at U of T doing an honours BSc with a specialization in global health & minors in German studies and Physiology.

GPA – cGPA is not great do to some rlly unfortunate circumstances my first couple years  – 76% I think is what I put for uOttawa. My sub GPA for Western was a 3.3, and 3.7 for U of T. But if my fall grades are used for U of T then my sub GPA was a 4.0

Stats – I got a B+ in my calculus courses, and then a C+ in my first stats course, but I took a harder stats course and got an A-. I also took AP stats in highschool. I took two epi courses too and got an A- in the first one and an A in the upper level one. Stats experience in excel and R.

Experience – I shadowed in a (wet)lab at SickKids and an infectious disease specialist at TGH in my first & second year. After second year & third year I volunteered and did clinical research (w stats analysis) in a specialised lung clinic. 4th year I did a placement project looking at behavioural aspects to engage youth in extracurriculars as a means of health promotion.  This year I am currently researching refugee youth and their health outcomes in Canada and started working on a policy statement. One conference, no pubs. I'm also currently the health director for a not for profit that assists getting hygiene products and increasing health care accessibility for refugees and new immigrants.

Hey  this is a random question but your volunteer experience really caught my attention! That is great that you are volunteering in refugee health care. I am interested in getting involved with refugee health as well, do you mind sharing how you found that opportunity/ any names of organizations?

No problem! I was connected through my program at U of T. My U of T supervisor (since I'm doing this project as my specialist project) was also the same supervisor I had last year. There is a whole list of organisations affiliated with the Canadian Council of Refugees and mine is also affiliated. I would suggest reaching out to university faculty members who are cross-appointed between certain organisations and schools to volunteer under them. If you're in Toronto, York as well as DLSPH are both really great for that. York has more connections imo though. Not going to lie, a lot of my experiences were through some sort of connection or sort of "fell into my lap" so to speak. So it never hurts to network and be friendly at conferences, student clubs, etc. :)

hey!! ? for my stats, i'm not sure if mcgill looks at cgpa or your last few years like some schools do, but my overall average is around an 88 i think and the average of my last 1/2 years is around a 94?? not completely certain about those numbers but it's somewhere around there

for experiences i'm not sure but i guess they would be average-ish?? i had a couple research assistant positions (mostly psych-related since my undergrad degree was in psych although one position was in a more medical-related field) with one NSERC USRA, and an honours thesis, but no pubs at all!! plus i also was a TA one semester. besides that i think i have a variety of ECs and volunteering roles but most of them aren't really too relevant to public health i would think, it's mainly just a bunch of stuff i participated in out of personal interest so i'm not sure if they had any impact on my app -- but if you're interested in any specifics at all feel free to let me know!! ☺️

Quite disappointed to be honest :( Being an international applicant, I thought getting accepted for MPH by McMaster was my best shot. But I have been placed on a waitlist by them. Now I am waiting to hear from Guelph & UoA. Not keeping much hope though !
