For future applicant reference, Princeton Sociology announced they will not admit a cohort this coming year. If you're making lists of potential schools to apply to in the fall, make sure you check every so often for updates on this coming year, as some other schools could follow.

It looks like some programs will still admit students, but that this cycle will be highly competitive due to an even smaller number of spots. Just wanted to share. Not sure what my own program is doing, if they are reducing the cohort size or skipping a year- either way I'll post it to this board when they announce.

JHU is accepting applications for 2021, also Northwestern has paused applications till Oct 28th, the official notice says that they are still deciding whether or not to admit students for 2021.

Awesome! Glad JHU reversed course. :)

Not going to update the list for this since they're still deciding, but U of Arizona and UCI also still figuring out whether or not they're taking apps. I'll update both of those situations when they (hopefully) announce later in October.

Washington State University will not be recruiting a new cohort. Internal e-mail confirmed this morning. There is a statement on the WSU Sociology homepage, but the prospective student webpage has not been updated (and it is unclear if it will be updated as a lot of the department's web presence is out of date).

Just received an email from Brandeis stating admission to sociology PhD is paused for 2021.

I don’t see anything posted on the website yet and I tried to post a screenshot of the email but it was too big. Could try DMing it if someone is interested.

Eleven days before the application deadline. I thought we’d be out of the woods by now. :(

Anyone interested in starting a list of schools taking a smaller cohort than normal if we hear about them? I've seen some public health PhD programs post notices about this.

The only ones I know about are NYU (1/2 cohort) and UCI (20% reduction). If you have others in mind, happy to add a second list to the not accepting list!

Back in November, I have also received email from UMinn that they also reduced cohort to only few demographers for the cycle.
