ETH Zurich [ETHZ] 2021: Admissions and ESOP/ETH-D Decisions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I started this forum so  we can keep each other posted on Admissions and ESOP/ETH-D decisions.
I applied to the MSc in Integrated Building Systems.

I heard that calls for interviews for the scholarships happen before mid-February. Has anyone received it?

Good luck to you all! :)

Hi everyone, I have applied to the Masters in Data Science program and did get a mail a week back that the application is under consideration but no decision yet. Few of my friends said that the results will come out in February. Anyways, anxiously waiting for the decision. Best of luck to everyone.

Hi everyone ? I applied for MSc in Health Science and Technology and ESOP/ETH-D.

Just got word of an interview for ESOP next week!

Good luck to all ?

Congratulations!

I applied for the MTEC program, but I have yet to receive any email. Still hoping for the best!

Does each program have a different release date? Also, is there any way to find out how many scholarships are offered per program?

For MSc acceptance, yes. Last year ESOP awardees were notified on the 10th of March and ETH-D was 17th March.

Regarding scholarships, I think it depends year to year. On the ETH website it says there are approx 60 ESOP and approx 30 ETH-D for 2021/22.

Greetings! ??

I have applied for the MA in Comparative and International studies, yet not for any scholarship as I already hold an MSc.

I haven't heard from them, too.

It is quite a popular platform for both Masters and PhD. Apart from the discussion forums, you can also search the acceptance dates from previous years for almost any college/program. I came to know of this platform from the person I was preparing my applications with, so just a word of mouth.

Hi!

I have read through all the previous years' discussions and wondered who would start it this year

Btw, how have you learned about this forum, guys? Were you intensively googling ESOP just AS I did? :')

hahahah it was obsessive, nervous googling for me too! the waiting part is definitely the most stressful, so stressing together and celebrating each other might help ease the process!

Hi all,

I applied to the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics master's and am eagerly awaiting results. Good luck to everyone and I would love to hear from any other CBB applicants.

Cheers,

Interview update...

Due to the fact I have an international Bachelor degree and I am missing some of the important prerequisites for D-HEST (Math, and enough physics), I found out that I have very slim chance of ESOP or ETH-D. Apparently Bachelor course content is favoured quite heavily by the selection committee no matter how excellent a student you are, as virtually all ESOP recipients in D-HEST come from the ETH Bachelor stream. I have heard similar things for BME.

I was extremely confident with my pre-proposal and asked if it weighs much on the scholarship selection, and no not really (for international D-HEST applicants anyway), it largely depends on what courses you have taken in the Bachelor and if they are very closely aligned with those of the ETH Bachelor equivalent.

To put things in perspective I am ranked in the top 7% of my Bachelor programme, was a research assistant at ETH for a semester during my Bachelor, strong LORs and LOM, strong pre-proposal (and in line with the research groups work), no publications.

I worked incredibly hard on my ESOP application so I am quite disappointed, but at least I was given a shot with the interview ?‍♀️ Not even sure if I still have a chance with admission in general. ?

Hope you guys have better chance with the other programmes, hopefully they are not as stringent :)

Thanks for the update and I'm really sorry to hear that. Compared to mine, your profile is outstanding and now I am a bit worried (but also hopeful since MTEC does not have a BS equivalent). Did you also take your GRE? Also, I'm pretty sure you will still get admitted right? Why else would they waste time to interview someone who will get rejected anyway? If I were in your shoes, I'd be optimistic! :)

No worries :)  Were there any specific credits prerequisites for that programme?

Thank you for the encouragement, I still have my fingers crossed for the admission. I think it will be close because I'm definitely missing above 20 of the prerequisite credits, maybe even 30, depending how they count them (Despite having a total 240 ECTS from my Bachelor ?). They may admit me with additional course requirements.

The track I have chosen within D-HEST is closely aligned with my Bachelor degree so I think that is what will stand to me. It's annoying because my Bachelor is already very specialised and related to the Master track but I am missing a lot of the 'natural science' and math foundation ETH is looking for in undergrads. I will have to wait and see what happens.

- No GRE as I have a Bachelor from an EU country.

Can anyone let me know what ETH-D means?

ETH-D is another scholarship aside from ESOP, but the budget mainly comes from the ETH-Departments. So it depends on the department you are applying to if they are rich, they can have more than 1 scholar under the ETH-D ;) It's also said to have a "partial" scholarship which just means that the allowance given is slightly less than the ESOP, but I spoke to a former ETH-D (it was called MSP before) Scholar and he said it was still enough to live off of that you don't need to shell out money.

I've heard about instances like that wherein people had to take additional courses. To be honest, for me, I think it's not the worst thing to do considering ETH is still very selective of its students. As for my program, they are just requiring some credits that are similar to their BS Mechanical Engineering or BS Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. It's just really confusing because my degree (Manufacturing Engineering) is not that known anywhere really ???

Hi, do you know if ESOP interviews are done independently by the departments? And do all interview invitations are sent before the anouncement of decisions?

Thanks!

Yes I think so. My department are doing interviews this week and the following week the selection committee is reviewing the ESOP applications. All scholarship decisions for all programmes are communicated by mid to end of March, so interviews will probably be done before the end of February, at the absolute latest.

Hi everyone  I applied for MSc in Robotics, Systems, and Controls and ESOP/ETH-D. I am from India with a Bachelors in Robotics and Automation.

Has anyone received an update regarding ESOP / Admission ?

Nice connecting with you Manu. I am a final year student of Robotics and Automation at PSG Tech, Coimbatore, India. Currently, I am pursuing my bachelor thesis in Robotics at ETH Zurich.
