Guys I'm an international applying to biomedical programs with focus on genetics mostly.. I didn't receive any invitations to interview yet :S I would appreciate if you could take a look at my profile and shed some ligh on what's holding me back/ what  could work on to make a stronger application in the future:

----

UG - Medicine at a Federal School in Brazil (Pass - I have an average of 7.04/10 for my graded courses, but nearly half my school hours were granted an ungraded pass mark).

PG - Residency in Medical Genetics, in Brazil 3 years (Pass)

Research experience -  combined 6 months undergraduate (1 summer research full time + several months part time at home institution): >2 years part time postgraduate (equal to about 8 months full time)

Work experience - nearly 2 years at a clinical diagnostics lab + clinical experience

Publications - One 2nd co-author, one in the middle of the author list  (both large journals of genetics). One book chapter accepted for publication

Presentation - 2 posters at international conferences

LORs - 3 good letters from my professors in Brazil, 2 academic, 1 professional

GRE General: 170 verbal / 161 quantitative reasoning / 6 writing

TOEFL: 119/120

Other: I contacted potential supervisors in all the schools I applied to, to discuss research interests and availability of places in their lab for rotating students next year. Got positive replies from them, but the contact was brief (basically 1 e-mail from me and 1 reply from them)

 -----

My teachers/professors don't have any experience with applications to international programs, so they couldn't offer any advice about which schools to apply or what to do to improve my chances... I would apreciate if some of you guys could help me out in this regard. My applications:

Applied: Harvard BBS, Harvard Chemical Biology, UCLA Bioscience, NYU Vilcek, Rockefeller, MIT Biology

Interview: So far not a single one :(

Hey, to me, your background looks really solid! Maybe it is all about the programs you applied to? Some programs might not just have enough funding for international students even if your background is super strong and competitive. For example, I have heard that NIH funded labs are not really allowed to take internationals and cannot provide support to them. Anyway, I wish you good luck with your applications and hope you get the invite soon! It might also help if you contact the admissions of the schools you applied to to request some feedback. They might not be able to get back to you until after they finish the current cycle but it might be helpful.

Thank you for updating us! Did your status on the Rutgers page change from submitted to in review? Mine is still "submitted" and I'm panicking if I'm missing anything. ?

Mine still says submitted even though I received an interview!

Hey there! Also an international student applying to genetics programs. Thought I had a decent shot too and applied to some of the programs you did with no interview invites Rip. In my emails with them, seems like across the board, most biomed programs were INUNDATED with applicants this season with some receiving almost 2x the average # of applicants. Definitely in part due to COVID's effects on last year's cycle, and it seems that the competition was fierce this year while the available # of slots remained constant.

Thanks... I will definitely write to them next year then and ask... I didn't know that was a possibility. Hopefully it will help.

I applied to a lot of the same programs as you! I’m also interviewing at Pitt. When’s your Pitt interview?

Is this in response to me? Sorry, I'm new to this forum and I saw you upvoted my post, which is why I ask lol

My Pitt interview is on the Jan 20 weekend.

Guys did anyone apply to and hear back from UMN Pharmacology? Surprisingly I never heard back from them yet. But I talked to a current student the other day and they said they received an invite in a week or so last year. Maybe I'm just rejected ?

Hi everyone! I got invites from Rutgers Multidisciplinary PhD Program and Weill Cornell BCMB. I got rejection from GSK.

Has anyone heard back from NYU Vilcek, Columbia CMBS, and Mount Sinai? I'm cancer bio track for most programs.

Hey! Has anyone heard back from UW MCB or Biochem departments? I saw some results from Immunology and Genome Sciences on the results page so I was a bit nervous.

One of the PIs told me yesterday that they're still going through applications for MCB but didn't say when they'd send anything out

@Bestluck2022 I applied to NYU Vilcek but have nor heard back. I think someone posted in the results page that they received an interview invite through email

Does anyone know if Rockefeller, NYU and UCLA send their emails all at once or in batches?

Hi, I just got an invite for NYU Vilcek. But doesn't look like they're all going out at once, since others got theirs earlier

Received an interview invite from the Mayo Clinic. I applied to molecular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics (MPET) and I selected the Phoenix location. Their interview "weekend" is Feb 9-11. Onsite visits can be arranged at a later date if accepted. It's hard to tell by the email if there are separate weekends for separate programs or if it is one big event.

Received an e-mail from BU saying they will send invites before holidays, but then since there are too many applications, they will keep sending additional invites in January.

I received the same email. Is this a good sign since they did not just reject us and took the time to email and notify about the delay?

I am looking forward to hearing from them then. I got into BU for undergrad but chose to go to UCSD (biggest mistake of my entire life). I hope I would get into BU for my PhD. See you there!

Do you know if that was the last batch of invitations? I applied for Microbiology at NYU.
