Living in Toronto.

Did not get the SSHRC.

I was applying for a 1st year PhD.

I assumed I wouldn't get it because I was ineligible to even apply for the OGS/SSHRC for my MA because of my undergrad grades and

at the time of application I only had two national conferences with a professor and no adjudicated awards or published papers, all of which I have beefed up substantially since then.

I guess I have to break the news to my department now.

Hangs head.

sorry about the news raise cain. best of luck next year.

Does anyone know why we are only seeing CGS results (with the exception of those in C category)? What's happening with the four year awards?

I'm in Alberta and had received my letter yesterday, which I wasn't able to post about until now. I was awarded the 4-year DF (Category B with a score of 18.7/30: 3 pubs, 2 conference papers, MA SSHRC, 4.0 GPA). I'm just finishing my MA and will be starting a PhD (in Religious Studies at the U of T) in the fall.

Congrats on the CGS!

I also know people who have gotten into schools to which they had not even applied once they had a CGS in hand. Call up your favorite school and tell them you have a CGS and you'd love to attend their school.

Seriously, what's the worse thing that can happen?

Got the letter today in a town just outside the GTA.

I was awarded a CGS (doctoral)... but unfortunately I didn't get into any of the schools to which I applied. Awkward discussion time.

I am in history and scored a 21.6, for what it is worth.

Posting from Vancouver. Just got SSHRC letter in mail today, dated April 21st. I'm on the waitlist and hope to hear back from a program officer in the next couple of days with more information of my chances. Talked to UBC today and apparently there are 28 on the waitlist. Does anyone know what my chances would be? This is my third year applying and my last shot at a SSHRC.

no letter today on the West Coast - fingers crossed for good news tomorrow.

Just called the awards person at grad studies at my school, she told me I got the SSHRC over the phone - go call yours instead of stalking the mailbox, apparently results have been emailed to them all already :)

FYI: Heard back from SSHRC and the waitlists are very particular to the subgroups of the selection committees. I know that I am 3rd on the list of my subgroup, which is the upper part of the list. The cutoff score for my area was 17.3 and my score was 16.8. I likely won't hear anything for a couple of months and it could be not until August that I might be offered the fellowship....depending on acceptances and the chance that other funding becomes available.

Just heard from my program that I got the CGS - very, very pleased about this. Was very certain that I would not get the award, but not going to turn it down, of course. Don't know if I got the letter yet - I live in a small town where mail comes late. FWIW, I'm entering my second year of a PhD, A average in MA, one publication, no presentations, no prior SSHRC funding, but currently receiving a university fellowship.

Hooray! :D SSHRC CGS ($35k/yr for three years)! woohooo! I'm in Vancouver. So happy. I was having serious doubts about success after re-reading my application, which I don't recommend doing days before the letter is supposed to arrive!

Here are my stats:

-2nd yr in program, 2nd time applying (I'm at the 16 month mark)

-Unsuccessfully waitlisted last yr. with a score of 16.8

-GPA 4.03

-One book review accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal at time of application, plus a few non-peer reviewed publications

-No conferences

-Several internal scholarships/awards

-SSHRC recipient for my Masters

-One other major external award at time of application

-score this year 19.9

Congrats to all the other successful applicants! For those who didn't win - I feel your pain as I remember the disappointment last year, but try again!

P.S. someone wanted specs on the envelope - it's a beige government letter sized envelope with SSHRC's info in the return address. exactly the same as last year's waitlist letter, but a couple of mm thicker due to all the good news!

Ohmigod, the suspense is absolutely killing me. Stupid me for not putting down my Canadian address for mailing purposes, now I am sat here in the UK twiddling my thumbs in agony just WAITING to hear back. Congrats to all successful applicants!

Hi all! Been creeping this forum for a while so I thought I'd actually post now that I've received my results. I'm in Vancouver and just heard - not via mail, but from my supervisor, who received word from our Graduate Chair this morning about my application.

Looks like it's a SSHRC CGS for me! Not sure about my score yet as I haven't seen the letter.

Here's my info:

1st year PhD

Received SSHRC CGS in Master's

At the time of applying for SSHRC, I had:

- 1 publication

- 4 conference presentations

- GPA was an 9.3 (on 10 point scale) coming out of MA

- 1 TAship, 2 long-term RA-ships

- letter from one full Professor (current supervisor) and one Assistant Prof (MA supervisor).

Hope that is helpful to some of you. That being said, don't take it too personally if you aren't awarded this time. I've applied 4 times and been rejected as many times as I've won (twice). Really depends who's reading your application.

Good luck to all!

Actually, I have a quick question. Which is the more 'prestigious' award - SSHRC Doctoral or SSHRC CGS? I realize Doctoral is more $$, but the benefit is that it can last for up to 48 months, whereas CGS is only 3 years. Thoughts?

CGS is more prestigious and more lucrative (3*$35,000=$105,000 vs 4*$20,000=$80,000)

Quick question: when you send your email of acceptance to SSHRC, do they send a response confirming they've received it? I can't remember what it was like when I accepted my MA award (it's been almost 5 years).

Hey, here's a quick question. If my notification said that I am receiving a "SSHRC CGSD," this does mean it's a CGS, right? If not, I might have to eat my words. It sure sounds like a CGS, though.

Yep, for my MA in 2009 they wrote back:

Good morning,

I acknowledge receipt of the acceptance of your award. A copy of this e-mail will be placed on your file. We wish you success in your research.

Hmm, sent one this afternoon and I haven't heard back. Would it be rude to ask them to confirm?

Certainly not rude, this is big money - important to confirm! However, I'd wait a day or two to give them some time to respond. Who knows how they are scrambling over there.

Just heard from the department that I received a SSHRC doctoral award. Don't know the details yet as the letter hasn't arrived...but nonetheless... yipee!

Just wondering if anyone knows what role GPA plays in determining SSHRC scores?

There are about 10 variables, so it very difficult to estimate (unless you've done it).

I asked for a confirmation and was confirmed. I received it early (monday at noon), so I sent my e-mail and got my answer before the rush.

In other words you get $25K more, If you are super smart with your money, you may have a 100% financed Ph. D. If you keep $1K per month, you get 36k for your fourth year !
