csunungrad Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 <3 aaaa wwwoo hooo!!!! <3 Everyone going to orientation on June 3? Yep!
brigitte115 Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Did anyone still waiting hear anything from UCLA? Lance Fooks also told me we would hear today (Monday) and not to worry about the admitted students day as it had no bearing on acceptances, as the committee are behind on their decisions. And still, nothing... i'm still waiting too.. doesn't look good
urbanengine Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I spoke with Lance yesterday, and he said I should hear by the end of the week. My friend who is a current UCLA MSW student said she spoke with Fooks today and he said that the admissions process took longer than normal and they're not done. i'm still waiting too.. doesn't look good

jedifreac Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) I'm also still waiting for UCLA....hopefully soon...I just need to know even if it is a rejection... I went to the Admit day at UCLA today. Couple of thoughts: If you haven't heard about admission, you're still okay. They are going really slowly on these applications. They claim that the order you are admitted has no bearing on your qualifications or how favorable you are as a candidate (but I doubt it because the Department had a deadline to submit for Fellowships.)If you haven't been notified about receiving a scholarship, you didn't get one. Everyone who got one has been notified. The department has yet to notify the losers. In the coming weeks, the admissions officer will be sending out additional information on financial aid opportunities. These include those stipends where you have to promise to work for governmental agencies afterwards. They didn't sound very promising unless you were interested in child welfare. Information about financial aid seemed very nebulous. =/ It looks like UCLA has been trying to be more warm fuzzy recently (big glamorous welcome weekends, butt kissing to proud parents of undergrads) to help mitigate angry reactions when the tuition inevitably goes up. MiaA Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Looks like a few of you guys are Fullerton-bound...me too, me too (maybe) !! Just got my acceptance Saturday!! Still waiting to hear back from a couple schools....Has anyone heard from long beach or dominguez hills yet? ?
MSW hopeful Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Let me know what you hear about SDSU......I was accepted two weeks ago and I have yet to find anyone on here that is accepted and attending SDSU. I did, however, meet someone in person who is....a girl I am training at work, and my current job has nothing to do with social work. SO random, we both whispered today while I was "training" her and talked about about our plans to quit in the Fall. Good luck to you!! I'm doing the community mental health concentration. You?

It's such a tough program to get into, I read usually 450 apply and 50 are accepted to full-time and 50 part-time. I'm not getting my hopes up though, I really doubt I'll be accepted because I haven't had much experience. I'll definitely let you know though what happens! Will you for sure be attending SDSU then?
bellerz26 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Also I posted this under "CUNY Hunter" but haven't received any feedback, and I really need some advice/insight!!! I just had an interview at Hunter and the program seems amazing and definitely worth it for the costs. However, I applied to the COP&D (Community Organization, Planning and Development) program and after going to the interview and getting more information on the concentration, I don't think it's right for me. I'm applying to MSW programs coming right out of undergrad (I graduate this May) and I don't feel as though I have enough experience in social work on an individual level to feel comfortable managing and addressing individuals/communities on a macro level. My interviewer also noted that if we wanted to switch our concentration to something else, like Clinical Practice with Individuals and Families, we should alert them now and they'll add our names to that pool of applicants. I'm really considering switching my concentration to the clinical track, but I'm afraid that changing it will compromise my application and decrease my chances of admission, especially since a lot of students apply to the clinical program, so I really need some advice!! Does anyone have some insight or experience with Hunter's admissions process? What should I do??? I go to Hunter now and I can say that even if you are a COP&D method, you can still take electives in clinical and they also offer a lot of support for people in your situation who feel anxiety over lack of experience. I will tell you though that if you are having doubts, you should tell them now because once you're in, it's very difficult to switch methods, if not nearly impossible. And yes it's true that more people apply to the clinical track, but they also accept more people as a result, so I think it balances each other out. I hope this helped.

I think my main question is what do people in the COP&D method do? Because I really want to work with people, but in my interview they really stressed the administrative/policy approach. And I just don't want to be in a field-placement where I'm sitting in an office carrying out administrative tasks - I don't want to limit myself. Also does the concentration even matter that much when it comes to getting a job? Or, is an MSW just an MSW?
erinl Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I just FINALLY heard back from Columbia. I've been accepted. Now...what to do, what to do! Decisions from two of the most expensive programs in the country. I'm waiting to hear back about funding, and that will sway me in one direction or the other. Has anyone else heard back from Columbia? Any funding stories to share?
Nia_nia11 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Was rejected by SFSU via snail mail. At least they were nice about it. I guess it's a good thing because they weren't my top choice but I would have been able to go there for free, and probably would not have been able to turn down a free education had I been accepted. Oh well. Still waiting to hear from NYU, BU, and Maryland. Really on pins and needles here...
brigitte115 Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Anyone have new updates on UCLA and CSUDH? I only applied to those two and have not heard from either about their decisions yet. So tired of waiting...
Tinaa Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Has anyone heard from Cal State San Bernardino? I called last month and they said I should find out in a couple weeks. Then I called back a week ago and they said I should find out in a couple MONTHS! That is ridiculous! Has anyone gotten an admissions decision?

urbanengine Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 I'm in my last quarter at CSUSB (BA in Communication Studies). Although I only applied to UCLA and USC for their MSW programs, I wanted to wish you good luck!!! Has anyone heard from Cal State San Bernardino? I called last month and they said I should find out in a couple weeks. Then I called back a week ago and they said I should find out in a couple MONTHS! That is ridiculous! happyroman Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 For anyone still waiting to hear from UCLA....THERE IS STILL HOPE!!! I just received my admittance today. Best of luck everybody!! :-)
urbanengine Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 AWESOME! I am very happy for you! I really hope to hear by tomorrow, although I know they're behind schedule. Was it through email? happyroman Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Thanks! It was via e-mail...it was a bit awkward since I was first sent an acceptance for someone else and had to e-mail Lance lololol...I was admitted minutes later AWESOME! I am very happy for you! I really hope to hear by tomorrow, although I know they're behind schedule. Was it through email?

Also does the concentration even matter that much when it comes to getting a job? Or, is an MSW just an MSW? Well I know people who are a COP&D method and they work closely with communities and individuals but then some people do just work in an administrative setting and don't interact with clients, only their fellow coworkers. So it's really a tossup on where they put you for your first year. Your second year you have more input. And while yes, the MSW is an MSW, the way you'll learn the material and approach it definitely does matter depending on your method. In terms of finding a job, it depends on what you want to do. If you would like to work in an agency and do more one-on-one clinical work but are a COP&D method, I don't know how prepared you'll feel. But if you want to work with communities and more on the macro side, then COP&D is the way to go. I hope this helps.
2011 MSW Hopeful Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 (edited) Just received an email about a group interview for Hunter College, but unfortunately it's for the weekend that I will be visiting UChicago. Hoping they will be able to reschedule...I'm a bit surprised to get an interview, but it sounds like after the interview stage it's competitive. Edited April 15, 2011 by 2011 MSW Hopeful

I'm going to call Hunter on Monday and figure out if I can change my concentration, since it has been three weeks since my interview. But at this point I'm a little skeptical about being picky because I just got a rejection letter from NYU :-( and I'd definitely be happy with the COP&D method as long as I'll be able to work with communities and individuals.
urbanengine Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 I found out earlier that I was accepted to UCLA!!! Lance emailed me directly and stated that he will begin my paperwork on Monday. I am SOOOOO excited, but will be sad to leave my job of 9 years at a Native American boarding school. I am waiting to hear from USC but I will likely stick with UCLA. I am super interested in USC's elective course, Media in Social Work: Documentary Filmmaking, but I know I can do all that on my own. I'm a Communication Studies undergrad and have taken a couple of TV/Video Production classes and am super inspired to make documentaries from the standpoint of an LCSW. Anyhow, I wish you all the best of luck! This board has been the greatest support for me, outside of my close friends and family. Thanks! It was via e-mail...it was a bit awkward since I was first sent an acceptance for someone else and had to e-mail Lance lololol...I was admitted minutes later
girllwholived Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 (edited) I'm still waiting on a response from University of Illinois-Chicago. One of my friends got a phone call from the director of admission yesterday (April 15) offering her a spot in the advanced standing program. I applied for the same program and I had not yet heard anything. I called to ask for the status of my application and I was told it's "still under review." I'm a little concerned, honestly. I turned my application in before my friend (I turned mine in at the deadline while she got permission to turn hers in a couple of weeks later), my GPA is higher than hers (my 3.5 vs. her 2.9), I had glowing recommendation letters, and I thought my personal essay questions were well-written. I just have a bad feeling about this. The only explanations I can think of are: 1) They're still behind on going through the applications (they told me at the end of January when they received my application that the admissions process can take up to 12 weeks); 2) We applied to different concentrations (I'm Children and Families, she's Mental Health) so perhaps the applications are sorted by concentrations? I'm just tired of worrying. I'd like to know either way so I can finalize my plans for after graduation. Edited April 16, 2011 by girllwholived
