new mexico Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Candler School of Theology just sent out an email stating that the new priority deadline for MDiv applicants is Feb 1 due to the awful weather. Thank goodness! My scholarship material JUST got there today, I believe.
mimetes Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Applied: UGA (MA), Wheaton (PhD-New Testament), Emory (PhD - NT), Durham UK (PhD - NT), Aberdeen UK (PhD - NT), Cambridge UK (MPhil) Accepted: UGA (MA) No word from anywhere else yet. Got an acceptance to the MA in Religion at UGA on December 23--no word on funding yet.
mimetes Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I'm applying to Yale, Harvard, and Vandy in their M.A.R programs and at UGA and Georgia in their M.A. programs. Also, does anyone think it is weird that Yale and Harvard have both delayed their deadlines? Do you know anything about funding in UGA's religion dept?

I was counting on them to give me news about a month in advance of everyone else. tacotruck, foodtruck, craprap and 1 other 4
pippwu Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I applied to Marquette, Baylor, Wheaton, Loyola Chicago, and U. Dayton for a Ph.D. in Christian theology. So far I have heard very little, though I have student contacts at four of the five schools who I am checking up with regularly. Shortly after applying to one of the schools I received a really nice personal email from its Dean of Graduate studies telling me that the graduate department of theology would get my application soon, but that he wanted to let me know of a number of reasons why this particular school "was a choice worthy of my careful consideration." I count that as an encouraging sign. Hope you are all surviving the inclement weather well. Its par for the course here in rural Illinois. Hi I received a similar email (although I applied for NT). Do you have any idea how many people get this email (everyone or just top choices?) Of course I was just excited to hear back from anyone, lol. Good luck!

I have no idea how many got it (I've corresponded with another individual who applied to study Christian Ethics who got a similar email). If last year's scheduling is any indication, we'll probably hear back about interviews next week if we are among the twenty or so that they invite. Blessings and best wishes!

ydg23 Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Did you get an email from Larry Lyon? No, I didn't. I hope that's not a bad sign.

I'm trying to decide if I want to apply to UGA and am wondering if I am competitive.
Tahuds Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Do you know anything about funding in UGA's religion dept? No, I'm an instate student so tuition isn't too bad for me even without funding.

No, I go to a small college in northeast Georgia. Man, those scores are really intimidating! I currently have a 3.75 Ugrad GPA, 4.0 in Major (Philosophy & Religion) and way worse GRE scores than you. 660V 490Q 4.0AW. Edited January 16, 2011 by Tahuds

Trin Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I was a Religion undergrade at UGA, but that was years and years ago. Back then it was all Old Testament or New Testament, with almost no diversity. I studied under Anthony Nemitz, who is gone now. *sigh* It was a very theology focused department back then, and you can see it from my transcript: Medieval Theology, Contemporary Theology, Constructive Theology.... :-) I hear it's much better now, where better is entirely subjective -- more comparative, more multifaith, with a more diverse faculty.

I haven't yet. Shortly after I sent in my application, Julie Hueber sent out a mass email saying invitations would be sent out around January 20th. I expect we should hear sometime this week. I noticed that you originally planned on applying to Baylor (in a previous thread) and wondered why you decided not to do so. Hope you are doing well in this agonizing waiting process!

I didn't get that email for some reason... I didn't apply to Baylor because their NT faculty (though excellent) didn't seem to have research interests close enough to mine for me to think I'd have a realistic shot, especially since I got no response either from admissions or the department (probably an oversight, I'm sure). Also, to be honest, those research proposals for the UK programs to which I applied took a lot of time and effort, and I kind of ran out of steam! All the best - I hope to see you in Wheaton in Feb!
twhitley Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Hello everyone. I'm back for round 2. Got wait-listed at two schools last year, but never got bumped up. Hoping for better results this year. Does anyone know when the Baylor and Vanderbilt "preview weekends" will be? Also, does UNC do a weekend like that? My current work situation has asked me to go to Oregon for part of Feb, but I want to make sure it wouldn't conflict with any invite weekend, should I actually get invited. Best of luck to every one. This is a grueling process that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

This is a grueling process that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I almost called Baylor today to ask about when they send out invitations. I did not because I was afraid to put myself on the "naughty" list by bothering them. You are so right when you say this is a grueling process. You encourage me by having the strength to do this twice. This is my first time, and it is so agonizing. Best of luck and God's blessings. To my fellow theology/religion applicants: I was stressing today, and Philippians 4:6-7 popped into my head. It might be helpful to remember this passage during the waiting period.

This is a grueling process that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Baylor's preview weekend is the 11-13th of February. Good luck And, at your quote--I agree, I wouldn't wish this process on my worst enemy. (I think I lost ten years on my life last semester because of all the stress!!). And, (although I will be honored at any invitation I receive!) I really don't get why schools don't post their preview weekends earlier, but instead just expect people magically to be free for any given weekend. Luckily (or unluckily depending on the week) I am a full time grad student, so I don't have such work commitments. But, it still is a bit harrowing. Best of luck to all!
