"toilets never flush."

of course, i'm bond. with boobs.

doing research in central america's pretty awesome. especially in places that have coup governments that illegally block your access to public domain documents. i'm fairly certain the process of doing research in my particular locales is way more interesting than my actual research is.

At least there are documents for regimes to block!

Congrats on Berkeley, BTW!

Congratulations! Did they email you? I guess my east asian history application is now down in the water...

Yeah, it was an email. Weird getting it 12:30am east coast time. They included all of the financial package info as well (whereas my reply from History and East Asian Languages at Harvard said the financial info would come in the mail in two weeks).

I hope you don't mind, but this made me LOL for the first time in days, so I'm gonna steal it for my signature.

Aw, I'm flattered!

Another Bond film name: "Dr. No Wipe."

Congratulations on the admit Paura!

nope. last summer i used 8 archives in 3 countries. and my documents aren't in english.

i had to take a speedboat to get between countries and the government archive i used didn't have toilet paper. or soap. or a sink (just a tap in the wall over a rain barrel). or a plumbed-in toilet (just a toilet sitting loosely over a hole in the ground).

i win. i think?

I don't get some sort of pro-rating for only being an undergrad?

Congrats to all who have heard positive news. To those of you who are still waiting, like I am, things take extra time with the money so tight, hiring freezes, and multiple feet of snow in various places (including Emory -- where snow shuts the city down). We should meet together and have a drink as a forum. Cheers!

Just checked the admissions site, and I've been accepted to Northwestern! No word yet on funding though.

Congrats on Northwestern! If I am not wrong, Northwestern funds all students admitted. Don't worry! :)

Well, I'm in Germany, the land of beer and easy access to cheap and excellent wines from France and Italy. What would you take? :D

Congrats to everyone thus far!

Congratulations to you! I still have no update either way on the admissions site, very frustrating.

I went to Embark online, signed in, clicked on my application to Brown and found this:

Dear ********,

I regret to inform you that the History, PHD Program did not approve your application for admission to Brown University’s Graduate School for the 2011-2012 academic year. Admission decisions are made on a comparative basis and are the result of a careful evaluation of each candidate's application, taking into account academic achievement, preparation for advanced study, and other supporting materials.

The majority of those who apply to the Graduate School have strong qualifications and demonstrate an ability to do advanced academic work. We regret that we have to disappoint many bright and talented students.

Thank you for your interest in Brown. I wish you the best in your academic endeavors.

Sincerely,

Peter M. Weber

Dean of the Graduate School

Brown University

No e-mail yet from them.

I am absolutely crushed. Shit sucks and it's time for me to seriously start making plans for next year. dfgdfhdfghdfgh blagh

It looks like they embargo the admissions decisions (e.g. mine says "Decision Status: Available beginning 2/10/2011"). My decision, like many others, was accessible shortly after midnight (EST).

So, it probably doesn't make any sense to check more than once a day--which should offer some relief if you are like me and were checking the site every 10 minutes.

Yup, I checked Brown too and I'm out.

I'm not too broken up about it, though.

ETA: And now 2 minutes later I got an email from Brown about it.

So I haven't been checking my application statuses at all because I knew if I got in the habit, it would bug me. After checking Brown, I went ahead and checked them, and lo and behold, UBC says they don't have any of my supplementary materials! I've emailed them about it and I'm sure I did everything right on my end, but it never hurts to check. Eek! Everywhere else has my stuff.

Someone else accepted for History on the results page noted they got offered $18,000 stipend + full tuition. My offer was $18,000 + $15,000 tuition remittance, and the Berkeley website notes that estimated fees (per semester) are ~$15,000. So half tuition in my offer. I'm wondering if our packages are different or this person was mistaken? It'd be a shame if their decision was financially based and they didn't realize this. Anyone else admitted have a different offer, or am I myself confused about this?

I found out some interesting news today! I had a friend call Clark and Cornell to see what they planned on sending out notifications (because I too chicken to do so myself...) and it sounds as though the Cornell AdCom is meeting TOMORROW on Friday and their decisions should be out by the middle of next week. Clark said theirs should be out before the end of the month. Good luck to everyone!
