SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants

It's a pretty small school in a pretty small town. I went there once for a weekend convention for music therapy. I don't know anything about the SLP program.

Does anyone have information about Radford University - the program, school, area, etc. that they are willing to share? I have been accepted but know only what I've read on the website and discussed with the director and current students via email. Any info would be much appreciated!

thanks!

Hi all!

I'm going to the UW-Seattle for my AuD in the fall but my boyfriend is deciding between UW-Madison and Colorado-Boulder for SLP. Does anyone have any good insights about the two programs? He's still waiting on Northwestern....what's the deal for that btw? I'm assuming he's waitlisted if he hasn't heard from them (because according to this website its mainly been rejections and acceptances). Any advice is much appreciated!!

I haven't heard from Northwestern, either. I'm also just assuming I'm functionally waitlisted. *shrug*

Just had an awkward phone call with Emerson admissions. They didn't provide any instructions on how to decline the offer so I decided to call in, but I guess that was the wrong move because I still need to e-mail the head of the apartment to explain my reasons for declining. A break-up indeed!

Do we really need to explain why we are declining?

No. The programs want you to, I assume, but you are under no legal obligation to do so. And frankly, it's not as though they have a right to know where you end up attending. Just like we don't have a right to know whom they accepted/rejected. But if you want to tell them why you are declining, fine. I just think it's unfair for them to act as though you have some moral obligation to tell them.

Thank you, I certainly hope it pays off. I also plan on applying EVERYWHERE I can afford to this next year (I don't care if it means 25 places - I don't know that I could handle all rejections AGAIN and still pick myself up and try again) to statistically increase the likelihood that SOMEWHERE would take a chance on me. I was thinking about cold-calling/emailing places that have speech pathologists and asking if they would take someone willing to file/answer phones in exchange for some extra observation time. With this fall looking like it will be truly insane, I am thinking I also might just take the old GRE in July before it changes. I have some time now to work on the SOP (anyone willing to help edit?! :D ) and GRE study, and then it will be overwith by the time I can submit new applications. Plus, there is always that chance that with the new GRE (as with any new test) the schools won't know how to compare them quite as well as the old one. And my undergrad gpa being a 2.7 (my gpa in my postbac speech courses is 3.5) puts me as a fairly shaky candidate...and my 1160 5W wasn't quite enough to convince them. But as I said, if I try the GRE again, and hopefully improve my gpa even more, I will have a better chance this fall. I suspect organization will be key, though, so making a schedule is distracting/comforting me right now!

Concerning the GRE: I had a lot of luck with the Kaplan vocab flash cards. You can find them for really cheap on Amazon.com. I just carried a handful of them with me where ever I went, and whenever I had a free moment I would study a word or two, with the goal of learning 20-30 new words a week. It worked out really well for me: so many of those words ended up being on the GRE test that I took. I knew the math section would be a crapshoot for me, so I aimed to get the highest score I could on the vocab/reading section.

SOP: I've been professionally editing for 6 years, so I'm happy to help if I can!

Ahh I wish I could make my decision already like everybody else! I got into NIU, which is probably my 2nd choice-- no word on funding yet. My top choice gave me a waitlist notification. And I STILL am waiting to hear back from 2 other schools!! I went through the results history on this site, and it appears that SIUC and WIU both sent out their notifications after April 15th...how does that work out?

Haha! I am going through a nasty breakup with Pitt. I was waitlisted and find myself thinking as I walk past the school "Pshhh.... after EVERYTHING I've done for you!"

It's sad.

Anyone ever see the Sex and the City episode where Carrie is going through her first break-up with Big and rebounds with the New Yankee? "Break-up rule number one...destroy all pictures where he looks sexy and you look happy." I guess I have to destroy all my pictures alongside the School of Health and Rehab Sciences. BUMMER

I have to agree here. Waitlisted at Pitt...after a year and a half of post-bacc work and going above and beyond. Not the same feeling going into class every day now.

Has anyone else still NOT heard from Northeastern? I have not heard a word from them and I have 3 other schools that I have to inform of my decision very soon!

I emailed Northeastern last week and got a reply almost immediately, asking me to provide my DOB and NUID so they can be sure they're looking at the correct student profile. I sent in the information, but strangely, haven't heard from them since.

I know there a few other people who applied to Syracuse here, though who knows if any of you are still reading the thread-- anyway, has anyone heard anything regarding merit awards?

On a different note, I hope everyone has a good weekend visiting schools (or doing whatever you're doing if you aren't attending any open houses)-- seems like lots are being held over the next few days! Poor timing personally, given my term ends next week and I'm buried in schoolwork, but such is life.

I emailed them yesterday and they replied that the admissions committee will have their decisions by April 15th (when most schools want to know if you are coming or not)... looks like I might have to ask for some extensions.

I've been having a hard time with it, too.

I haven't sent in all my declines yet because I feel guilty about it.

I have only been accepted to one school so I don't have the opportunity to decline, but I am going to take my name off of the waitlist at at least one of the schools I got waitlisted at because I am sure someone else would like to go there more than I.

If I knew I wasn't going to go a school, I would decline as soon as possible...so that others (and I am sure there are PLENTY) don't have to wait until May to find out if they have made it off the waitlist.

Just wanted to put in my 2 cents.

PS. TAYFRAY, glad to hear you got everything figured out! I wish you the best with school and your family :)

(And yes, I'm getting my declines in so people can get off waitlists!)

Just got my decision from loyola, the last school I was waiting on. Got rejected! Straight up! To any of you still waiting on them, the letter I received was pretty rough. "Your qualifications were not sufficiently competitive when compared to the entire pool of applicants"

Just got word that I received a 25% tuition waiver from Vandy! Freeeeeeeeeaking out at the moment.

That is so great!! Congrats! Getting news about funding is almost more exciting than hearing from the schools sometimes haha.

I applied to Syracuse. I haven't heard anything about funding or merit awards... One of my other schools also told me they would have info about funding "soon," but that was when I got my letter on 2/9. So, yeah. I'm honestly not expecting to get any information about funding before we have to send in our decisions.

Are you by chance going to the open house tomorrow for Syracuse? I am!

That seems unnecessarily harsh and vague, too! Sorry you had to receive that. But it seems as though you're better off going elsewhere if they treat people like that!

Is anyone going to the University of Oregon's open house next week?

It looks like I'm going to be spending my spring break touring schools haha

I was accepted at U of O but didn't hear about an open house. I haven't told them whether I'm accepting their offer yet as I am still not fully decided. Maybe that's why I didn't get information about the open house or maybe I lost some part of the letters they sent me? I went to an information session for the CDS program back in the fall. I liked what I saw for the most part. The only thing I wasn't too keen on was almost all the faculty have expertise in neurogenic/TBI/medical and I'm interested in working in the schools. I'm a little worried about getting a too narrowly-focused education there, although they did say they balance your externships equally in both schools and medical settings. Also, I used to live in Eugene and think it is so boring. Oregon rules, Eugene is a little too much of a small college town for my liking. I will say that the clinical facilities at U of O are beautiful (I'm at Portland State now and our clinic is in the basement of a hideous, very dated building). Do share your campus visit experiences!
