ssundva Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 The results search shows one person as having been contacted by Emory for interview weekend. Has anyone else heard anything? Is it safe to assume that all the interview offers have been sent out?
Capo Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Glad you posted, I've been worrying out about this too. Hopefully the emails haven't all been sent out yet, or that there may be more than one interview session, because the first weekend of February is mighty close.
ssundva Posted January 20, 2011 Author Posted January 20, 2011 Or it might be fake. Of course, I do hope that it's fake--plus, it seems strange that there would be only one post.... soxpuppet and Deletethis2020 1 1
Queequeg Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Of course, I do hope that it's fake--plus, it seems strange that there would be only one post.... It's not fake. I posted the result. There was no indication about whether they had contacted anyone else or how many people they were inviting for interviews. I'm surprised I'm the only one who posted an interview up there. So it may well be they haven't contacted everyone yet. Good luck to anyone who applied. To Inafuturelife...I look at the livejournal english 2011 site sometimes. Just checked it, but didn't see anything posted about Emory at all. Was I looking on the wrong community? woolfie 1
KRC Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 (edited) Yeah there have been many interviews at Emory posted this year. Mostly in the "hard" sciences but I count 10 in the humanities and social sciences so far... Edited January 20, 2011 by KRC
mostlytoasty Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 I applied for the English PhD program and received an e-mail for an interview/visit yesterday! I talked to an old professor of mine and he said these were very rare. I was surprised to get this invite as well. Do most schools do this? I'll definitely attend this one since I will be on the east coast next week anyway, but I hope this isn't a regular thing because my current job would kill me (well, fire me) if I kept asking for days off!
Queequeg Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 http://community.liv...gi_lounge_2011/ i have a habit of making posts friends only - i guess i should stop that for the community? congrats on the interview Thanks for the congrats! Keep your fingers crossed. And congrats to you as well mostlytoasty!
Pamphilia Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 congrats! and no, most programs don't interview. emory, NYU (i think they did them last year, anyway) and a few others (northwestern? are there even any others?) are the exceptions (i couldn't think of anything to put in parentheses here ha). Interviews for English are rare; in-person interviews a la Emory and NYU are rarer. Stanford and Northwestern have done phone interviews in the past, but Northwestern at least did not interview last year. Different adcom chairs, different strokes.

Yeah and hopefully the way those NYU interviews went last year, that'll be the end of that for them. Congratulations on the interview, Queequeg and mostlytoasty.

Yes, I believe (but could be wrong) that Stanford did not interview last year either; in fact, I don't think it has been a regular policy for their English department - more like a tactic they tried out, and I don't think it lasted more than a year or two. Please correct me if I'm wrong. As to Emory - congratulations to those of you who got interviews! Unfortunately for those still waiting, I would feel pretty safe assuming they contacted all interview selections roughly simultaneously, especially with the interview date so close. I don't believe Emory admits an especially large cohort, and certainly not everyone posts on this site - for comparison, if you look at last year's results, only two people posted interview notifications, which is pretty comparable to this year. In fact, NO ONE last year ultimately posted an Emory acceptance. Fortunately for those still waiting, the schools that tend to notify early (if I remember correctly, Emory, Northwestern, Duke, SUNY Buffalo, others I'm not remembering) aren't good "indicators" of the overall success you will have with other schools. I was rejected by Northwestern pretty early last year, and went on to have what I felt was a successful run. So chins up everyone!

I made a deal with myself: wait with hope through tomorrow and then, if there is still no contact, it would be more than safe to assume that they had already contacted all their prospects. Congrats to all those who got interviews! For those who haven't heard anything yet, why not keep your fingers crossed?
englishgrad11 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Thanks for the congrats! Keep your fingers crossed. And congrats to you as well mostlytoasty! Queequeg and mostlytoasty: Congrats! Looking foward to meeting you both very soon. I received the invitation for a campus visit/interview to Emory on the same day as when Queequeg posted on the survey list, so I assume that Emory sent out the emails simultaneously. I've never done a campus visit/interview, so I don't really know what to expect -- excited and nervous at the same time.
lolopixie Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Congrats to everyone that received interview invites. I applied to Emory and have not heard a peep -- guess I can count that as a good indication of a rejection letter/email headed my way. That's okay - I hear the traffic in Atlanta is terrible anyways lol. Let us know how they go.

I've never done a campus visit/interview, so I don't really know what to expect -- excited and nervous at the same time. I went to Emory for undergrad and took a few graduate seminars along the way. I remember that during the campus visits some professors would realize that a prospective student's interests aligned quite nicely with a certain class session going on that day, and suggest that the applicant sit in on the class. It seemed as if just a handful of the prospectives would do this--not all. I'm not sure how much notice they received about it, because some of the students who sat in on my classes and were prompted to offer their opinion on a certain topic looked as if they felt that they were being put on the spot, and it seemed pretty uncomfortable at times. One of them said that they had found out about attending the class an hour beforehand. I think this practice is truly meant to help the prospective student get a feel for Emory, and is not supposed to be some kind of test. Just a heads up. By the way, Emory is a totally lovely place to be. Best of luck to all of you interviewing.
alorsjoy Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I applied to Emory's PhD program in English, and I've heard nothing! Not even a rejection... Is it safe to assume that I'll be receiving a rejection soon? Congrats to all who made it:)
