So does this mean that people with CGS-D and the SSHRC Fellowship will get the same amount per year (40k)? The wording is so confusing lol

Yeah, that's what was outlined in the federal budget. Moving forward I don't think there will be any separation between SSHRC/CGS, as it's just going to be a single doctoral award under the new "New Talent Program". I just hope the New Talent Program is a four-year award like SSHRC and not a three-year award like CGS.

It's all very ambiguous tbh. I guess we have to wait until July to see what happens. That said, I'm questioning if this also means that we won't get our first instalments until they make announcements in July.

Yes the wording is confusing and vague. I've already received my first instalment (I chose May as the start date). I emailed inquiring to ask if it means that those who requested a start date before September will receive a top-up payment. If not, this means that those in the *same* award year will receive different amounts (30,000 and 40,000). This would seem unfair, especially when we chose the May start without knowledge of the September 1st increase. I am optimistic that everyone for the 2024-2025 cycle (whether starting in May, September, or January) will receive a total of 40,000 for the year, it just means that additional funds will get released from September.

Hopefully some answer soon...otherwise one month or so to wait...

Anyone have any insight about or also holding out hope for the # of awards increasing this year/for the next application cycle?

Link to the official announcement for anyone curious: https://www.canada.ca/en/innovation-science-economic-development/news/2024/05/government-of-canada-announces-details-of-increase-in-award-values-for-federal-scholarships-and-fellowships.html

Since it says "currant and new" award holders, I feel confident that anyone who got May payments will see the increase in Sept. It also implies that people from past award cycles who are still holding their award will see the increase too, which I hope is the case.

Fingers crossed for those of us on the waitlist! 🤞

Yes I agree with you. I emailed to ask some insight, ie., will people who received a May payment only receive a partial increase to their November payment (10K then 20K, so their annual amount this year would only be 30K), and they responded by reiterating the budget statement. I take the point that "increased award values take effect as of September 1" to mean that the money will flow from September, and those who already received a payment will either receive a supplement or a bigger second instalment, so everyone in the 2024-2025 cycle will received the increased amounts, such as 40K, irrespective when their payment schedule is. Hoping this is the case...

I chose May too, but I had to go through my institution (which means I'm still waiting for my first instalment). That said, I think they will top us all up similarly, i.e., we all get 40k, but its just wonky for those of us who started in May vs. September. I just wish they communicated these things clearly with the breakdowns.

So if the CGS-D and SSHRC fellowship programs are merging into a single program in which all current and new doctoral award winners receive $40,000/year for a max. of 4 years, does this mean that those who currently have a 3-year award get bumped up to 4?

I got CGS-D in September 2021 when I started my PhD program and it's up this year on September 1, so I assumed the changes under the new budget wouldn't affect me. But the ambiguous wording in the most recent press release and the fact that I received an email from SSHRC as a "current award holder" are getting my hopes up that I don't need to scramble for money next year haha.

I know it's unlikely but man would it be nice to have another year of funding.

The way I see it there are 3 options for our November payment:

1. $20,000 to match the new regular payment amount

2. $30,000 to match the new annual total

3. $23,333 - May-August it was 20k/annum, September-April it's 40k/annum, so have to "top up" the September-October payment value

If I am honest, $30,000 feels unlikely because they were very clear it is September start date and it would also create a mess with all the existing award holders, i.e. do they top them up and how much and which ones. $23,333 also feels unlikely because the process seems so manual and I doubt they're going to sit there calculating payment for each date/person. So to me it feels most likely that we will get $20,000, so $30,000 total. And tbh I am still wary of them potentially grandfathering us in for this year with $20,000 total...

I understand your points, but the fact is that whether we chose May, September, or January as the first payment, we are all in the same award-year cycle, i.e., we are the same cohort. It would be odd for them to split up this group, especially when we were allowed to choose May start before the announcements were made. I've seen some professors on Twitter ask this question about their doctoral students. Regarding your point with the existing award holders, I guess it would just be that their increase would be effective for their year. In any case, I hope SSHRC has communicated the position May-holders are in. But who knows, we'll have to wait a couple more weeks to hear (hopefully it's beginning and not the end of July)

Question: Has anyone else's Doctoral Fellowship been recently turned into a CGS-D? What is the purpose of sending out this offer now (late June) if all awards will be valued at $40,000 in the fall? Any thoughts? hahah

I thought that the Vanier was being discontinued with these changes, as it was outlined in the federal budget, but the 2024-2025 competition was launched a couple of days ago and still says it will be $50,000 per year for three years. Hopefully we get more clarity on everything soon.

I saw this too and it is very strange. I guess they have to operate business as usual until they get direction from the government. I'm also wondering about the part of the budget where it says they will be awarding approximately 1700 more people with the increased funding provided by the government...no word of this yet either. Hopefully we find out more in July :)

I really do not think that the Vanier or Banting postdoc will be discontinued because those two are open to non-canadians.. if they eliminate them, then they would have to open the regular competitions to non-canadians which I do not think will happen.

Btw, the majority of banting sshrc winners this year, were foreigners. I am very surprised by that.

Yeah I wondered the same thing. It's just confusing because the latest announcement at the end of May said that the Vanier and Banting will continue under their current parameters until they are replaced by the streamlined talent program outlined in Budget 2024. I assumed that meant they would be replaced this year, but maybe not. So I wonder if it's just going to take longer for them to be replaced, or if they will somehow still be a separate award under the streamlined talent program?

Most probably they will be separate awards mostly for foreigners, so yes..

The purpose of the 2024 budget is to "retain canadian talent" in canada

Maybe the idea is that you can say you got a CGS-D on your CV which is maybe considered ever-so-slightly more prestigious?

Nothing 😕 I guess they did say “July” so we could be waiting another 1.5 weeks.

Where are we supposed to hear from? An official news release? An email?

I think we can expect both. They mentioned they would email us in July when details were finalized. On another note, I randomly went to the extranet to see if the award letter was changed, but I keep getting a “500 internal service error”. Anyone else?

So I am not getting the same internal error you are getting, but I have no idea what it means. The suspense is killing me but the longer I go without hearing, the more I think it's unlikely I'm moving off the waitlist this cycle. Also, the phrasing of their email isn't clear and I wonder if they are waiting until next year to provide more awards, and just increasing the value this year.

Hi all,

I am also in the club of waiting to see if they will award more awards (looking the budget it is mentioned that they will build on to the number of awards by approx 1720 across agencies and competitions). I am also wondering if I will get off the waitlist. I hope we hear soon. The only thing thats concerning to me is that they said they would communicate further details to award holders in July... I hope we get information and closure from this cycle (whether awarded or not!)
