Waw Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Heya, I'm applying to some SocAnth programs alongside a few of my friends, and it turns out that one uni has recently contacted them to arrange interviews. I haven't been contacted, so I'm wondering whether to be disappointed, or to keep the faith that there's a chance I might be accepted even without an interview (as the department doesn't mention that an interview is neccessary for admittance, and my application is fairly strong). Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks! I don't think that interviews are customary. I applied to a school that said nothing about interviews but I was contacted directly by a faculty member who basically interviewed me over the phone to be her research assistant. So, I wouldn't take that as a rejection because if they were going to interview all applicants they probably would have mentioned it during the application process or at least somewhere on their website. I'm thinking interviews might happen if someone is looking for a research assistant or TA and want to know a little more about the applicant. At least that's what happened to me. Unfortunately for me, the interview went great but someone else was picked over me for a TAship because they have higher GRE scores than me. Sad it came down to that because I'm a horrible test taker and those tests are BS anyway. Hang in there and good luck!
anthropologygeek Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Only way it would be a no is if it's for the exact advisor as you and it's just an admission interview initiated by the prof.
Waw Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 Thanks for the answers! I had a feeling it might not be as bad as my first instinct. I guess it's just the general anxiety over waiting for responses. We'll see how it works out.
kateow Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Regarding this, does anyone know whether WashU accepts people they don't interview? (I'm curious about the Anthropology Department.)
hopefulepistudent Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I don't think they do, unfortunately. The anthropology prof I talked to a few days ago said they have selected 20 people for phone/campus interviews and will select 3 out of those (for socio-cultural anthro). Regarding this, does anyone know whether WashU accepts people they don't interview? (I'm curious about the Anthropology Department.)
persiandoc Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Anyone has any idea who got interview for HASTS/MIT? No body seesm to have applied to HASTS here!
far_to_go Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 My department (UVa) doesn't accept people without at least doing phone interviews. They usually try to bring in prospectives to do in-person interviews as well. However, I'm sure departments differ on their protocol, and you shouldn't automatically assume that no interview=no chance. Of course, I know from experience that it's easy to assume the worst during the waiting period! Hang in there!

Any additional info on the archaeologists? and does anyone else wish they would stick to similar schedules between subfields? It's so hard to know how to judge the fact that sociocult or bioanth people have heard!

It's so hard to know how to judge the fact that sociocult or bioanth people have heard! For archaeology, they interview 5 - 7 people and admit 3 - 4, depending on how many people they have funding for. They'll be sending out notifications soon, if they haven't already.
