nervousnelly Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I'm wondering who else is in the position I'm in -- I applied to a number of schools that have sent acceptances and rejections to others, but I haven't heard anything. Anyone else in this position and/or know what's going on?
TMP Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Keep saying to yourself, you're not the only one, you're not the only one. Last year none of my schools notified me until beginning of March. It's also a question of working out the funding. Decisions have been made but departments are now looking for funding before making formal acceptances.

Decisions have been made but departments are now looking for funding before making formal acceptances. Thanks. That makes me feel a bit better. It's so weird seeing that BOTH acceptances and rejections have gone out from these places. It's like, "They must have decided. Why are others hearing and I haven't?" Then again, maybe ignorance is bliss. I'd like to think it means I'm still in the running -- though if it were a clear decision from them, I suspect I wouldn't be sitting here without a letter of any kind.
mdg Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I understand your anxiety, I'm dealing with it myself.
history_PhD Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Also haven't heard yet; it's incredibly frustrating! I've been talking to my professors about this, and they keep telling me that it is still early. Of course, they don't know about the others who have already been accepted.
willemvanoranje Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I'm in exactly the same position. Because others already have had acceptances from places I applied to my hopes aren't exactly rising either...
nervousnelly Posted February 11, 2011 Author Posted February 11, 2011 I'm in exactly the same position. Because others already have had acceptances from places I applied to my hopes aren't exactly rising either... Yeah, same sort of feeling here. But it's especially weird when you see that acceptances, rejections, and waitlists have all come from one school, and you haven't gotten any of the three. It feels like you're in limbo, which I suppose is better than rejection, but probably means the outcome isn't looking rosy, either. Anyone know why this happens? Some acceptances and rejections go out from a particular school, but not all for that school?
TaraDanielle Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) Me too. I just want one letter to know that I'm in the game, so to speak, but if that one letter is a rejection, then I'll probably wish I were back in the "ignorance is bliss" stage. I had no idea this would be so nerve-wracking... Edited February 11, 2011 by TaraDanielle
amberanna Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I've gotten one rejection, but that was a week ago. I'm kind of in the "I don't care anymore, I just want to know" mindset right now.
borderlands Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Those who hear back sooner than others is probably because professors identify their top recruiting priority early on. Whereas early rejections means that the application was not competitive enough. Keep hope they are probably waiting to hear from the college about planned funding for next year. I know this is the case for UC's since the state is demanding another 500 million cut. Most Ph.D programs offer full funding to their incoming students. It is all about budgeting and recruiting their top picks.
nervousnelly Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Realistically, though, it means I'm probably not getting in anywhere, right? Because it doesn't seem like schools ever get more funding than they thought they'd have... Wow. I thought for sure I had a decent shot at getting in someplace, even if I didn't have a lot of choice about where it was. This is feeling like a shutout.

andixmas Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Totally know how this feels. It has been especially disconcerting for me with Northwestern, with the slough of rejections last weekend and the few acceptances during the week. Oh well. I can say that I have heard for sure that UChicago hasn't made final decisions yet, but they should be coming in the next few weeks.
history_PhD Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Sigh, still quiet. On the bright side, I got a revise and resubmit for my article; my professors are happy about this and think that I have a really good chance of publishing it. The recommendation was to add more diversity in the primary sources, which I am accomplishing by going through ~20 years of a local ethnic newspaper. Thanks, interlibrary loan!

nervousnelly Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 If a school is calling people for prospective student visits, and I haven't heard, should I assume I am out of the running? Man, this is really getting me down.

StrangeLight Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 If a school is calling people for prospective student visits, and I haven't heard, should I assume I am out of the running? Man, this is really getting me down. honestly? yeah. assume it means you're out of it. NYU, for example, is notorious for rejecting students they bring to the prospectives day and for accepting students that they never contact for a visit. when i applied for programs, i hung on hoping i was that one student who doesn't get invited to prospectives week but is still admitted. not only was i ultimately disappointed, because the "no" came so late in the process (late march, i think), i never took the time to really enjoy any of my acceptances. assume that no invite means you're out, and then if you happen to be admitted anyway, think of it as a happy surprise. that's my advice, for what it's worth.

Good to know. I can't believe places don't even bother to send out a rejection. It seems like basic manners, after someone has sent in a record of their life's work, to at least send them a generic "we regret to inform you" letter, so that they can stop wondering. People always tell me that academia is uncivilized, but it never ceases to amaze.

♀HealthMatters Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Last year I applied to 5 MA programs and 1 PhD program. Not only was I rejected from all six (not surprising, as I had no sense of purpose), but I didn't know a thing until the last week of March (UF, UMass). The rest did not come until April. It is really early, so I'm hopeful that I'll hear something soon. I was accepted last week from LSU, but I still have 13 apps (all MA, except for Temple) with unknown outcomes. I assume I will be rejected from all. I've started looking for apartments in Baton Rouge. I know this isn't the first time for some of you. Are many of you first-timers? For those who are in and have knowledge -- do you think a department is turned off by back-to-back applications? If so, I know I can cross Temple, UF, and UMass off my list as potential choices.

I was just in Baton Rouge last Friday for research. Their special collections library is absolutely beautiful. There are some great archives there and in New Orleans so get excited. Also since I assume you do Modern US from your name there is a great African American Library in NOLA with fantastic civil rights and harlem rennaisance collections. simone von c 1

Been lurking here for a while, but I wanted to join in the madness. Hehe. But hello! I am a first-timer, but I was also accepted into LSU (MA) the last week of January, but it's been radio silence since. LSU was my safety school, but every once in a while I feel like it's gonna be the best and/or only option. At least I have one, but I'm going nutzo waiting for the rest.

Ironically, as I just wished for a choice in the end, and I was accepted from Tennessee. I guess OCD has its good moments (though I may soon develop carpel tunnel from hitting 'reload'). I looking forward to visiting Baton Rouge and NOLA.
