HelloEveryone Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I'm still (ludicrously) trying to work through some code for a whale population model.. but beer is sounding better and better Bruin123 1
Bruin123 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I'm still (ludicrously) trying to work through some code for a whale population model.. but beer is sounding better and better Now that just sounds awesome. I <3 whales. HelloEveryone 1
Kriegsspiele Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Now that just sounds awesome. I <3 whales. I <3 your mom too. Sorry, really couldn't resist that one. boneh3ad and Bruin123 2
HelloEveryone Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Now that just sounds awesome. I <3 whales. me too However, you wouldn't think that's true b/c the first few times I tried the model, I killed off all the whales really quick. Then I had a problem with negative whale populations, and wanted to spread a theory about anti-whales swimming through the Atlantic canceling out my real whales..
Kriegsspiele Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Krieg. I'm having a franziskaner as we speak! Ah good choice. Haven't had one in a while, next time I go to Munich though I'll grab a case for sure.
Bruin123 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I <3 your mom too. Sorry, really couldn't resist that one. Wow, I just burst out laughing like a crazy person in the middle of my lab. Awesome.
topcat84 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Ship me out some spaten oktoberfest. Wooden keg preferred! Lol Awexome 1

What field are you in to be able to do such awesome models? I've been really wanting to break into population dynamics modeling (specifically whales), but Biostats faculty/my advisors/my slave drivers to whom I owe my soul don't particularly care for those models, so I have to study other things.
topcat84 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Absolutely no offense. BUT. Why would the DoD care about whales? Lol. Unless they have laser beams attached to their heads...... hello! :) and Awexome 1 1
boneh3ad Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Absolutely no offense. BUT. Why would the DoD care about whales? Lol. Unless they have laser beams attached to their heads...... They only do that to sharks...
etale Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Absolutely no offense. BUT. Why would the DoD care about whales? Lol. Unless they have laser beams attached to their heads...... I just found out that I've reached my quota of positive votes for the day...
Bruin123 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 (edited) Absolutely no offense. BUT. Why would the DoD care about whales? Lol. Unless they have laser beams attached to their heads...... Actually, there's a program in the Navy where whales and dolphins are trained to detect underwater mines. But I also imagine that abundance modeling is important to the Navy to see how likely it is for an aircraft carrier to strike a whale and upset Greenpeace. Kriegsspiele Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 But I also imagine that abundance modeling is important to the Navy to see how likely it is for an aircraft carrier to strike a whale and upset Greenpeace. Now that was funny!

I'm actually in the "Earth and Atmospheric Sciences" dept., working with a couple oceanographers that have really really broad interests.
HelloEveryone Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Now that was funny! Maybe funny.. but absolutely right. Also, I'm just a first year dabbling in some projects, and I mostly wrote to DOD about bio-acoustics.
topcat84 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I knew dolphins but did not know whales! Awesome. Still needs more flubber - glavin. Haha only one person comments with all of my tv / movie references? Anyone get the one in this post? Awexome 1
mposa Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 [quote name=hello! ' timestamp='1303149810' post='246816] YEAH! That's what I got on Saturday! But I didn't take a screenshot of it before I refreshed and got "locked out." The page that I got forwarded to after logging in was ndseg.asee.org/award/sessions, but if you go there without logging in, it's a 404 page. It's a little odd because if you type in a random address like ndseg.asee.org/award/test, it's a different 404 page.
topcat84 Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I think we are missing the key point. Save the whale movement....then train them to sniff out mines? Seems quite cruel....or morbidly awesome! "Oh your're not endagered anymore?? BOOM!" Awexome 1
hello! :) Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Where did you come up with the URL https://ndseg.asee.org/award/sessions ? If I go there, I get the same message as you. However, If I go to https://ndseg.asee.org/award it brings me to a login page where my login information from the application is not valid. https://ndseg.asee.org/apply Hey mposa, it's the URL that I got forwarded to after trying to log in. Not sure how to trigger it again and what the heck it's for. I haven't been able to do it again since then.
jendoly Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Man oh man, I thought for sure there'd be news by now!
Kriegsspiele Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Seriously.. trickle here, trickle there, just open the damn floodgates already.
HobbesIsMyHero Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Does this feel like Friday all over again to anyone else?
boneh3ad Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Nah. At least today is Monday so we are promised an identically nerve-racking day tomorrow if it ends like Friday did.
husky Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 Does this feel like Friday all over again to anyone else? You took the words right out of my mouth.
