@ lkjl2007- I ended up writing my proposal in German and turning in the Lebenslauf in German as well. Hoping that will give me some sort of edge. I'd really love to teach English in Salzburg. What city did you request?

Anyone else checking their e-mail incessently today? I sort of hoped they'd send us the results today *blush*. Dare to dream... I won't be able to sleep until I know whether or not I made it to the next round! Good or bad news....it doesn't matter! I'd rather know now.

If anyone has any updates please post them here for the rest of us! Thanks!

You're probably right about the competitive edge--they'll see your German ability right off the bat. I didn't request a specific city or region as I'm honestly open to anywhere, though I loved Vienna and would love to teach there.

A friend who was an alternate two years ago heard absolutely nothing until March. No email, no letter.

Are you serious? That sounds like something that would happen because of another country's decision-making process...but how could they possibly not tell him anything for months? Did he contact IIE at all? If that happens to me I'm going to freak.

i emailed fulbright manager rachel holskin and received an autoreply stating that she is out of the office until the 23rd:

Thank you for your email.

I will be out of the office from Monday January 16th, returning on Monday January 23rd. I will be checking emails regularly.

If you are a 2012-2013 applicant: please note that notifications regarding recommendations will be sent via email by the end of January. Please check your inbox and your spam for this notification.

If you are thinking of applying, please visit our website at www.fulbrightonline.org/us for more information on grant opportunities, eligibility and application components. I will respond to email inquires as soon as I can.

All the best,

Rachel

not to pester everyone else with my own worries, but i hope this doesn't mean that it will be after the 23rd that we are notified...

My inner optimist interprets her auto-response as a preemptive coping mechanism against the flood of e-mails that will surely follow notification. I still think it could be this Thursday or Friday!

To those of who you have applied a 2nd, 3rd or X amount of time, why do you think you didnt get the Fulbright when you applied? I know they don't tell you if you are rejected, but I'm just curious. I have so much respect for everyone in the running. The waiting is serious hell. Is it Friday yet? Good vibes to everyone.

After much thought, I realize, this waiting game means more to others than most... For some, depending on the response they receive for the first round could mean various plans being created or changed... A lot of personal decisions are going to be determined just by this response. For others this is a great opportunity for their resumes, learning a new thing or accomplishing a dream etc. This doesn't ease the tension and nervousness we are all experiencing, nevertheless, it interesting to hear the stories and questions being posted...

Oh man, Molly, I wish. I really doubt it. But last year they announced on the 18th that the new notification date was the 23rd or 24th, right? So maybe they'll make an announcement, at least?

What do you guys think?

To those who are losing sleep and having panic attacks: I understand. Truly I do. I've been there. But seriously, you are bigger and stronger than this process. This is one opportunity out of many. Don't give up your sense of agency -- you have the power to carve your own path, even if you get this one "no". If there's one thing years of fellowship applications (some -- thank god -- successful) have taught me, it's that each of these things is only a small piece of the puzzle. It's worth it to anchor yourself in the real world (nice walk outside, unrelated reading, etc.) to help firm up your sense of scale, if you think it needs it.

*climbs down from pedestal to refresh email for the 23,000th time today* B)

I doubt we will hear tomorrow just because they notify our advisers a day before they notify us, and I think at least one person would have heard from their adviser had they already been notified. My bet is also on this or next Friday... I think Friday because it gives (rejected) people a few days to cool off over the weekend

Hello Olivia,

This is my second time applying and I'm pretty sure I know why I didn't get the grant (ETA) the first, despite being seemingly qualified, speaking the host's country's language fluently, having great recommendations, and an English degree. At the time I felt like I had this grant in the bag. Now the country I applied to was only offering 1 ETA grant. This can be both a bad and good thing. Good in that there might not be as many applicants, (thus the 1 grant), bad in that you're competing fiercely for just one grant. The university I attended also is renowned for having some of the highest Fulbright recipient rates. This is, of course, not a direct factor.

Meanwhile I had mentioned that to my friend, who was not attending the same university, that he too should apply. He had studied education and was just about to receive his teaching certificate. He applied to South Korea, and spoke not a lick of Korean. And as past statistics indicate, despite offering around 70 or so ETA grants, South Korea receives tremendous amounts of applicants.

So over the course of the waiting period he and I both discussed the pros and cons of each of our applications. Long story short, he's in South Korea and I'm still in the good US of A. Now there are subtle differences in our applications, and variables regarding our respective host countries abound. But what I think made a pretty significant difference was my friend's teaching experience, and his desire to truly pursue a career in teaching, as it is his passion.

Don't mean to scare anyone who doesn't have teaching experience. These are simply my thoughts given my situation. Like a said, there are many, many variables. Just thought I share this with you.

i'm a study grant to germany, and i've got reading mastery of my language, good writing ability, and intermediate speaking/listening ability. although my proposed project requires reading more than anything, i devoted some space in my proposal to talking about how i would go about attaining better speaking abilities before arrival.

jnashski, you speak fluent Macedonian? Wow. Out of curiosity, how many of us are fluent in the host country language? And how much do you think that helps?

Well the country I applied to last year was Serbia, and I speak and read Macedonian (the country to which I applied this year) much better, though as anyone from any of the former yugoslav republics can attest, the languages are very similar.

Also, just to confirm about last year, notifications for first round were sent out on Thursday the 20th.

Good luck to everyone!

Hello all,

I've been following this thread (though have not posted) while also dealing with Fulbright notification jitters. Just in case there are any doubts, though it seems like most are on the same page, I called Cara Doble as well today and was told we would receive news this week.

Hey everyone~ I'm waiting right here along with all of you and I am extremely nervous, mainly because I don't have surefire plans after graduating with a Psychology degree this Spring. I applied for a research grant to South Korea, and the Fulbright would be an extremely beneficial experience for me, because my overall goal is to become a professor of Psychology and specialize in cross-cultural developmental research. I'm also extremely intrigued by South Korean culture, so not only would this experience be beneficial to my career, but it would be an amazing personal experience.

I applied for the Critical Language Scholarship for South Korea, and unfortunately got rejected, but I am holding my hope out for the Fulbright. Reading posts on this forum has helped me through the waiting process, and I hope that everyone here will be able to receive a grant, because you all sound passionate about your application. :) Good luck everyone!! *sends good vibes*

this leads to the obvious next question: what did you put for the plans upon return portion of the application?
