Fulbright 2012-2013

Fun with maps!

I took the spreadsheet data and made maps with them! -- because data is beautiful, because I am a huge map nerd, and also because it only takes about 10 minutes, which I would spent refreshing my inbox anyway.

Warning!: These are just for fun and I made them in a hurry so I didn't worry about the legend, titles, good colors, etc., and I didn't check to make sure that all the countries joined properly so there might be a few missing. If so, sorry -- and if any errors make you crazy, feel free to re-create these maps yourself!

Here's who has found out for 2012.

Here's the notification timeline for 2011, 2010, and 2009.

Edit: I forgot to mention that if a country had both full and ETA dates listed separately, I used the full notification dates. If a country only had ETA dates and no full dates, I used the ETA dates -- although many countries' ETAs and fulls found out at the same time, so no worries.

As a fellow GIS nerd (graduating with my masters in urban planning in 27 days!) I love you.

Also check your spam/junk folder on your email (although I'm sure you've already thought of this)

You should definitely check your spam and if it's not there, contact IIE (I know someone else suggested this, too). The other finalists for Korea at my school all heard back on the 27th.

It is my understanding that the medical forms are due 1 month from the day we receive the packet in the mail with country specific information. We have been discussing some of this on our Facebook group. If you aren't already in the Facebook group, here's the link: https://www.facebook...10265979000617/

I'm not a germany grantee, but I think this is correct. that's what it says on the letter attached to the health certification "within four weeks of receiving your letter from the [FSB]"

however, I did get a little nervous for a while because the website says it's due within three weeks of receiving notification. Which is just crazy - my doctor doesn't even have a spot open for an examination until January 2013!

http://us.fulbrighto...nt_medical.html

Also, if anyone was wondering, you can have a nurse practitioner do the examination. A licensed physician just needs to sign (and review, obviously) the form. I'm an idiot and I didn't read the instructions on the covering letter, so I called Walter Jackson and he confirmed that for me.

Wonderful! If don't get the Fulbright for Kyrgyzstan, I can always run away with you to Romania, no? We can map our little hearts out. ;)

Does your project involve mapping?

Edit: to fix my weird quote spacing.

Were they all accepted or did they hear back about alternates and denied as well?

Here's the response I got from Pam that I promised to share with all my Central America/Caribbean buddies out there:

Dear _________,

We are working to get the notification out as soon as possible. I hope by mid-April or so we will be letting applicants know.

Best, Pam

Hopefully this means we will know in the next couple of weeks.

Nice. Hopefully this means I can stop hitting the "check email" button on my inbox for a couple of weeks.

Thanks! Is that the Facebook group for ETAs and research grants? Or just ETAs?

It *might* involve mapping, but its more systemic and regime analysis. If nothing else, I would be surprised if I would have access to ArcGIS there.

Dear Spain Research Fulbrighters

Contacted Rachel (to make sure our timetable wasn't different from ETA time-table) and she said we would hear back either this week or next (so I guess all Spain folk will find out at the same time), keep clicking refresh, I guess.....

On another note, anyone else want to swap essays, I read one and it was really good, curious to see a few more, if any one is willing.

Hi All! I am new here. I was selected as a finalist for an ETA in Venezuela. Does anyone know the usually timeline for the selection process for this country? Also how do I find the spread sheet that people are referring to?

Welcome, PDX. The spreadsheet can be accessed here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuGpbWEh-3b0dHZzTU1BN0lNLU1yeG5XWktnY2k3bmc#gid=0

As an aside, can someone explain the different roles CIES and IIE have in the Fulbright application process? I've been perusing the website of the former as a means of distraction/procrastination and I noticed that CIES asks applicants to direct their questions to a different set of region-specific associates than those at IIE (with whom we are all by now familiar). Any insight? Thanks all :)

That's pretty sweet! May I ask what you used? Not Arc-GIS was it?
