judehermes Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) Checking this thread/my email/my campus mailbox has turned into an unhealthy, life-disrupting compulsion. It's becoming more and more difficult to concentrate on the things I should (and need) to be doing in order to graduate, because I have all this anxiety about what I'll be doing after. I'm generally a level-headed person, but I'm a J-type (in Myer's-Briggs terms) and really need a plan! I can't handle the fact that my planner/calendar is utterly blank from mid-May forward. Needless to say, I might actually have a heart attack when Fulbright notifications arrive. Heh. I'm a "P" and this waiting process is making me into a "J"! Accepted--full grant to Belgium!! Small white envelope packed with material...no email yet - - so excited!!!! YES! Congratulations!! Edited March 5, 2012 by judehermes
T Pain Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Hey, whoever is managing the Spreadsheet: T Pain = Westie. Please conflate those two entries! TPain/Westie
bdoll Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) You just made my day. I don't know how I missed that after scouring the website a hundred million times. I think that is a change from last year and I probably failed to reread the 2012 updates... *dances* Thank you for finding that! Have you found out on Indonesia yet? That's great! I'm happy to help - there's a lot of internet baggage out there about fulbright and it's so hard to keep track of it all and what is or isn't current. when I was applying I was terrified I was going to miss something and have my app automatically rejected or something. Indonesia applicants haven't heard back yet and I don't think we'll hear back until april, unfortunately. The infamous Indonesian "Jam Karet" (rubber time) is in probably in full effect down there! EDIT: Awesome job T Pain! Edited March 5, 2012 by bdoll
Espanya2013 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Congrats T-Pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let the good news keep coming! (hopefully)
Eric Bee Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 hmm...I see there is no one else on the spreadsheet recommended for Romania - Can whoever is editing it put me down as such? Thanks!
strgrl522 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Oh wow! The first acceptance!! I can't believe it's starting! Congrats T Pain! Yikes though, it could come in a small white envelope too? Now there's going to be even more pressure opening the envelope, haha. I thought the same thing, ACO -- hah. CONGRATS T Pain!!!! Rock on!
strgrl522 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Just curious, does anyone know if receiving notification from Belgium at this time is on point or earlier than last year's grantees? I referenced last year's spreadsheet but didn't see any listings for Belgium... Trying to prevent premature hyperventilating lol... best of luck to all!
teendolphin Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 hey all. i'm new to this. where do i find this spreadsheet/contact thing? i'm finalist for ETA Dominican Republic. Anyone have any thoughts/info when I might hear back? or when it happened last year. thanks! best luck to everyone!!
oa0176 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 congratulations T pain!!!! lol @ ACO teendolphin, the spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuGpbWEh-3b0dHZzTU1BN0lNLU1yeG5XWktnY2k3bmc#gid=0
judehermes Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 (edited) Kind of describes me right now during this excruciating period: It's really too bad I have to teach tomorrow at 8:30 am. It's an hour and 15 minutes that I will be away from my computer to hit the 'refresh' button. Edited March 6, 2012 by judehermes AK89, redArcher and oa0176 3
minorcharacter Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 (edited) T Pain - congratcha-fukkin-lations...to be completely profane. I'm waiting on a Germany full and though the Germany Fublright office contact I made assured me early March was the notification date, I called Cara Doble, the American Fulbright coordinator for Germany, in the last few days and she said we would NOT be notified in early March, maybe not even March as she had not yet received any information from the German Fulbright folks as to their decisions on the American students' apps that have been sent to Germany for their assessments. Long-winded, I know, but I think you all will understand. I'm frankly not sure if she was just being diplomatic and trying to chill me out, but she did say that everyone here at The Grad Cafe forums should mellow a bit. Good advice, if you ask me. In other words, PATIENCE. Be buddhist, baby. It's what I have to tell myself every morning as this application could be life-changing for me as I'm an older applicant. If any of you care to read my proposal, I posted it here, on The Nervous Breakdown, where I am a contributing writer. Would love to know what any of you folks think of my application. Also, if I can gain a reader or two amongst all of you, I'd be happy if you read some of my writings, all here at marksutz.com. I write fiction and my proposal is for a Creative Writing grant to Kassel, Germany. Good luck to all - a Fulbright would be an amazing beginning to a lifelong journey. A fork in a road I can hardly begin to imagine. Feel free to contact me at masutz at gmail dot com to commiserate. ***on an edit, I'm adding this - timeposts are GMT, which tickles me because I'm obsessed with looking at when everyone has been laying down their posts...for me the 732 AM timepost is actually 1232 Arizona time, where I now live wondering what the hell I'll be doing a few months from now*** ***on another, last (I promise) edit, let me make a general plea - share your proposal with all of us? I'd love to see the narrative of your dream grant where ever in the world you want to go*** Edited March 6, 2012 by minorcharacter bdoll and T Pain 1 1
1CrazyLady Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 I'm delurking/decloaking to tell you all that I feel your pain. ALSO waiting to hear about the UK Fulbright. (I applied for a research grant). Does anyone else feel a little nauseous with fear and/or excitement?

Does anyone else feel a little nauseous with fear and/or excitement? I'm going to say it's mostly fear...if I get accepted then the excitement will manifest. Many congratulations to T Pain, can't wait to hear about all the other acceptances that will be coming in (hopefully) soon!

Does anyone else feel a little nauseous with fear and/or excitement? Fear, impatience, and a little annoyance (at having to wait so long!). Like minorcharacter, I too am an older applicant and getting the grant would be life-changing in more ways than one. CrazyLady -- what's your project on?
Eric Bee Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 bwaaaaaa! I should not have looked at this forum! Y'all are stressing me out! ;-)
heyles Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 I'm frankly not sure if she was just being diplomatic and trying to chill me out, but she did say that everyone here at The Grad Cafe forums should mellow a bit. Good advice, if you ask me. I agree. As someone who currently works at a job kind of like theirs (no, I don't work for Fulbright!), constant interruptions and follow-ups hurt more than help their efficiency. By calling and emailing, you are distracting them from processing EVERYONE'S application more quickly. More to the point, it's a little selfish to call because you're basically assuming 1) yours is the only application they are working on, 2) your country is the only project they are concerned about, 3) your needs are more important than the other work they are doing right then, 4) your needs are more important than the thousands of other applicants, and/or 5) they aren't doing their job, and you want to remind them. Even if it's a "quick" question that only takes a minute, it adds up -- plus the time it takes to remember what they were doing before your question. Believe me. I deal with a lot of these little interruptions, and it slows down all of my work. They know everyone is anxious. So far, this year seems to have run very, very smoothly, and we found out about the first cut two weeks early. Even with hiccup the week that applications were due on the website, they were quick to notify everyone and extend the deadline, so it seems like they err on the side of transparency and generosity, not secrecy and "that's your problem." Until they give us reason to believe that there is something to worry about or some indication that they already aren't working crazy-hard, I say back the heck off and let them process all of us! PS. I was recommended as an ETA to Taiwan. I'm also a grad student, and like someone else mentioned, probably a couple of years older than the typical candidate. And I'm definitely not above it all -- I'm going out of my mind and here checking the website, aren't I? rising_star, redArcher and bdoll 3
Mbeeezy33 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Heyles, your post just made my day and helped me to calm down. I was contemplating whether or not I wanted to give my country adviser a call today and just see if they had an idea on the timeline. But, after reading your post, I'm going to try and just relax and enjoy the process as much as possible! AKA: still going to go crazy, just going to leave Fulbright alone AK89 and redArcher 2
1CrazyLady Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 I'm actually an assistant prof. Applied for a research fellowship to Durham. It's a national security project, having to do with how we talk about threats like pandemics, and whether or not the way in which governments talk about these threats has evolved over time. I REALLY need to stop checking this site. . .

Hkf322 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 I'm decloaking to say that I'm a professor in waiting, too. I think you guys really have your finger on the pulse of things. It's a great spreadsheet.
Busti Bustamante Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 anxiously waiting... Here's to hoping for some good news, soon! Good Luck!
Jumat Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 For those others who are waiting to hear from Indonesia, I spoke to a former Fulbrighter to Indonesia who said it shouldn't be too much longer - he mentioned that Indonesia is usually pretty fast about getting the decisions in (compared to some of the other country committees. I think it's fair to guess we'll hear by late March or early April. Hopefully not took much longer now. redArcher 1
lkjl2007 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I've been calling my parents constantly about the mail...just want my notification to come! Ideally it'll come in about a week and a half, while I'm home on spring break, because if I'm not selected I really don't want to find that out over the phone with my parents...
kgba Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I totally understand how you feel, Ikjl. I can't wait to get my decision, but I'm dreading that phone call with my folks!
