curious zygote Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 To all- here is the stress reduction technique that I used my senior year to keep from spontaneously bursting into tears or throwing up due to the butterfly population explosion in my GI track: Lay on your back in a comfy position, preferably on a bed or couch etc. Place hands on stomach and take a deep inhale as you count one, two, three, four, five. At five hold for two counts, then exhale over the course of a count from one to five. When you inhale try to inhale to your hands, in other words, abdominal breathing. After you've taken one deep breath and exhaled, count it as number ten, the next series as number nine, all the way to one. This only takes a few minutes and I was doing it like 20 times a day. Physiologically, it serves to re-establish proper levels of dissolved gases in the blood stream, which in addition to the psychological factor, has an incredible calming effect. Making sure to take healthy, deep breaths will make all this more tolerable (or at least it did for me). May everyone rest well and relax!
DrBones Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Thanks, Zygote. That's awesome. *breathes deeply*
cookies10 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 is it just me, or did the fastlane page change? you still cant select 2009 on the award year menu but the page has a 2009 Offered Award List heading up. maybe I just overlooked this before. I think I'm going crazy...
bzheng Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 fastlane main page says there's a delay until early april.
t_ruth Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I don't know why I even bother. I'm already assuming rejection and trying to find resources for applying next year.
curiousD Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 the results haven't even come out yet. why are you being so pessimistic. cheer up you only live once
BioC Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 "2009 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship awards will be announced in early April. We apologize for the delays." Tomorrow is the "earliest" April you can get... Maybe tomorrow? Still waiting...
math123 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 BioC, they did that last year as well. "Early April" meant April 2nd last year...
mtlve Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I just called and they have the same story as people who called yesterday said. They said that we would be notified sometime in the first 1/2 April, and he could not say whether it would be this week or not.
spanglish Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I just called and they have the same story as people who called yesterday said. They said that we would be notified sometime in the first 1/2 April, and he could not say whether it would be this week or not. I bet that the NSF hasn't made up their minds yet and told them. Yay for government!
mtlve Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 To add to this, I looked at the discussion from last year, and they were telling people at least 3 days before hand that they were sending out the notifications that week. If we keep up all of the posting we can surpass last years thread long before they send out the notifications. Last years thread had 15 pages and we are at 13 already! Well back to my paper........
curiousD Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 That's because this is ridiculous how long it's taking! When do you guys anticipate the results to be posted? If you had to take a guess that is.
math123 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I'm still waiting for that slip-up. This happened at least two years in a row, but people should be able to find out if they got it before they "officially" make the list available. I'm banking on today or tomorrow.
BioC Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I just hope they are taking so long because they are giving away more grants. I can forgive them if that's the reason why. Specially if I am one of the lucky ones However, I think we will only know around April 6th, otherwise, they could say "The results are coming out this week, so stop calling us!" Who knows...
idk123 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 i called today too and the lady said that they might come out sometime this week or next week, but that they haven't gotten the list from NSF yet so they're not really sure. she said in the past, fastlane has "jumped the gun" and that applicants could see if they were awarded a fellowship or not via fastlane before emails actually went out.
caezar86 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 My guess would be the beginning of next week as much as I hope it will be sooner. Maybe next Monday or Tuesday.

Does this mean that fastlane has the information even before they do? Maybe we should be calling Fastlane instead and pester them!
curiousD Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Haha! That's actually not a bad idea... maybe people should call fastline to find out their side of the story. It's so unfair to make people wait so long when decisions really hinge upon this knowledge.
vice Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I just want to be ready... last year I found out that I didn't win by walking in on someone's celebration party. My scores were almost the same as her's but I got a HM, difference a point; unless there was some diversity stuff at work. I think I made a even better argument, have a lot more research, outreach, and publications on there this time... I guess only time will tell...
wiredsundrop Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 So we shouldn't expect to be notified prior to the list of awards being posted??? I've been thinking that surely winners would be notified and they would have to log in, accept, yada yada, and that they would have been notified by now for the entire list to be posted by "early" April. Last year when I did not get it I didn't get a notification e-mail of my rejection until like 2 weeks after the list had been posted on fastlane, by the time I'd gotten over the rejection they just sent me a reminder e-mail..thanks. So there is still hope?!?!?
green273 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I've heard that people who have been awarded the Javits only have until April 6 to accept/decline. So for people in the social sciences who have been awarded a Javits--if the NSF results don't come out before April 6, that's a problem for them. The choice might be a no-brainer, you say, but actually depending on their financial situation (spouse/no spouse, etc.) and the way the university handles funding, some people seem to take the NSF instead of the Javits. Not too mention everybody who is waiting to see whether they got an NSF to decide where to go. My heart goes out to you.... Poor little old me, though, is not lucky enough to have such lofty problems. I would just be happy with a little bone thrown my way... an HM.
Friar.Tuck Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I wonder how many people applied this year. Fie upon ye fools. For thou art but mortals, ignorant in the art of science.
DrBones Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Thank you for that extremely helpful comment, Friar.Tuck.
