How could they forget Gil Scott-Heron during the tribute? :(

That's easy he never went platinum or even gold ... when was his last album? who was he dating? didn't stay current man!

Hmmm perhaps they did at some point in the evening, but I don't remember seeing him in the montage. He was just such a great writer, thinker and musician, it's a shame he doesn't get the level of recognition he deserves.

When I told people in my masters program that the thesis was stressing me they'd say completely unhelpful things like "oh don't worry about that, you'll finish." like because I was going to get a PhD the thesis wasn't going to be scrutinized the way it would have been? I don't know. That just made me more angry. I went and spent two more weeks in an archive to prove them wrong.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of my committee read the first and last chapter of my thesis. Not that I'm complaining. It is stressful, but that doesn't mean they always go through it with a fine toothed comb. That wasn't the experience of everyone in the department however, so just know your committee.

uh, hello?!?! Guys?!? Its Monday morning, in the THIRD week of February...its time to get back our neurotic/comforting non-stop chit-chat about what may or may not happen today...

They talked about him separately. I think it was when Common and Taraji were presenting an award! Fear not!

Yay another Monday to start another week of waiting. I hope some of y'all get good news (especially those who haven't had any at all).

I feel like a 2nd Class citizen here trying to get into places like UConn and Northeastern haha.

Don't feel that way. Everyone here knows that history is a field where there are regional and methodological specialties. Every department has their own special mix and the best places in the country in some subfields are certainly not the Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Michigan, Wisconsins of the world.

they gave gil scott-heron his own mini-tribute, which i think was more meaningful than being wedged into a middle of a montage like facundo cabral. he was the argentine bob dylan and was gunned down inside of his car by men on motorbikes in guatemala city last summer, only a few blocks from where i was staying at the time. it sucked. i was pleasantly surprised to see him in the in memoriam at all, but i think they did scott-heron a little more justice. although ending with, "and he showed that the revolution is being televised" was painful. really? it's being televised? the news is talking about the disproportionate number of blacks and latinos in US jails? the stark residential racial segregation that still marks most US cities?

i'm disgusted that chris brown has been warmly welcomed back into the mainstream musical community. remember kids: you don't just have to beat women to win a grammy. you also need to dance and lip sync.

rihanna's dress was amazing. her decision to start seeing chris brown again on a not-so-down-low down-low is amazingly idiotic.

every performance was a fucking embarrassment except for adele's. paul mccartney continues his transformation into an old lesbian. nicki minaj was embarrassing. i actually feel bad for her. it seemed like the amount of talent was inversely correlated with the amount of fuckery on stage.

Can we, like, place bets on which schools will be notifying this week so I don't have to - gasp - study for my quiz tomorrow?

What is this "study" nonsense you speak of Tele? Study? Ha! We LAUGH in the face of studious endeavors here!

I'm more pissed that the two people he decided to thank after winning a Grammy were God and the Grammys for letting him on stage.

U Conn and NE are 1st class schools...and at least for me, my A-list roster of applications reflects my delusions of grandeur as much or more as it does any academic class I might be able to claim membership in...

Welcome aboard and good luck...

Congratulations to everyone who has acceptances! Does anyone have any inside information on UW Seattle decisions?? I think they are my last hope!

First of all, welcome.

Second, as H&P said, those are good schools. I'm also applying to UConn (it's true that I haven't seen many other Connecticut applicants around here, though). But now I'm wishing that I had been a bit more pragmatic in my applications, to be honest. What's your subfield? (feel free to PM)

I think Grad Cafe tends to proportionally attract more ambitious students, because they're the most neurotic.

TRUTH

I only found out about this place because my friend (who was already in a PhD program in the sciences) wanted to ruin my life. He did. And it made me both more ambitious and more neurotic.

Hey guys! Concerning Columbia, unofficial acceptances are down to individual professors - last year I was contacted by my POI after I got the DGS e-mail. So the silence from there means little yet. Hang in there! If you have any questions about the institution and course, I would be happy to answer questions!

Yes, it'd be nice to know when to hear from U-Washington!

FWIW, the GradCafe is seriously the best place to be. Really, this place provides so much support for me... you guys seriously rock, especially the regulars. You guys have seen me stumble and fall into a black hole of despair, shame, and... God knows what else and I don't know how I got out sometimes and just come back here in the fall to start again. I just think of that post I made last April where I used a picture of an exhausted, beaten WWI soldier hiding under some tree branches in a trench after a battle.

I truly cannot wait to meet some of you at the conferences and some of the archives. Maybe when we hit up the AHA, we will have our own party to get through the meat market!

Very neurotic place but there's an upside to it. We push each other to be the best that we can be. And that's really good thing.
