New England Nat Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I wouldn't worry too much about that Osirus, everyone knows perspective students are nervous as hell
oseirus Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I wouldn't worry too much about that Osirus, everyone knows perspective students are nervous as hell Thanks Nat ... I am rarely flapped or nervous but I kind of got excited in the moment
New England Nat Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I'm going to put out my offer again for those of you who are going to Princeton visits next week that if you show up early I'm happy to give unofficial tours of campus with geeky historical facts before they try to get you drunk on Sunday night. schlesinger1 and Hilversum 1 1
Nordicllama Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 I have missed you Lllama ... in the way a diver misses the deep ... or a heroin addict misses methadone ... or kleptomaniac misses going to the sales at Foot Locker ... and this bracket thing you speak of? What be this contraption good sir? Bracket- Definition: Torture device for people who believe they have some knowledge of college basketball that serves to humiliate them in the presence of colleagues and coworkers. Example: Man, I picked Duke to go to the final four and now Lehigh has destroyed my bracket. And now I find out Kendall Marshall has broken his wrist. Whoa is me! What dark days have come to pass for the Tar Heel nation!

What dark days have come to pass for the Tar Heel nation! I do not know the meaning of the word shame ... I spent some time at an all-boy's school at one point in my life ... I will go on ... I will rebuild ... and I will look equally foolish once again next year when I construct the new "perfect" bracket which will be foiled by some greedy young whippersnapper from some no name school, looking to torment me thusly ... a sip of the finest apple juice will be poured tonight for the brackets that didn't make it
TMP Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Re: March Madness. Since my decision is tough... I am beginning to consider using the tourney as a way of helping me make my decision. Whoever goes further wins. So far, OSU and Wisconsin have made to Sweet 16. I knew I did the right thing by applying to big sport schools for PhD.

You will need to put that in your acknowledgments for your first book some day: "And I would also like to thank NCAA Men's Basketball for helping me to choose my Alma mater during the 2012 basketball tourney. Wisconsin, you were a free throw from receiving one of the greatest scholars of history in history."
Simple Twist of Fate Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 (edited) Just for fun, I made a quick bracket in which I picked the winners based on which school I would rather attend. After tonight, it's in the 61st percentile on espn and is doing significantly better than my "real" bracket. Edited March 19, 2012 by Simple Twist of Fate
Nordicllama Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Well its a well-known fact the best way to pick your bracket is to assign one team even and the other odd and shoot dice. If an odd number comes up you go with the odd and if it's even you go even. With Florida State out I'm down to 5/8 of my Elite Eight remaining and 3/4 of my Final Four. Seminoles. I blame Oseirus.
uhohlemonster Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Well everyone, I assume this will be my last week playing the waiting game. Rutgers told me they should let me know this week after I gently told my POI that I got into NYU. The only place I am still waiting for is Oxford's Modern Middle East Studies program, which I'm not going to go to but don't want to withdraw from because, well, that application fee was like what, $120?! I may as well see what happens there. I feel like any decision from Rutgers is a win-win. Being rejected would make my decision very simple. Being accepted would be exciting for many reasons, but also a tad stressful. We shall see! For now I'm going to enjoy LA as I am here for a work adventure, leading a service trip with a group of nice students from a liberal arts school in PA. We're all a little disappointed because it seems the East Coast is warmer than it is over here. Boooooo! Happy Monday, everyone.

Nordicllama Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Life hates me ... only explanation It's okay, Oseirus. They had a good run. Life apparently hates the Tar Heels, though. Preseason favorites for national title- BAM! your 2 guard's ACL is torn. Okay still in contention for the national title- BAM! Your backup point guard and best perimeter defender's ACL is torn. Okay we we could still win the ACC tourney and get to the final four- BAM! your best rebounder and defensive player of the year's wrist is sprained. Okay, well we lost the ACC tourney, but we'll get him back and will contend for the final four- BAM! Your Bob Cousy award finalist, assist leading, ultra efficient point guard's wrist is broken. HA! Oh. Stillman White to the rescue!!!

crazedandinfused Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 Guys, I'm doing a campus visit and I'm passing so many archives that I've only wistfully dreamed about working in and I now realize that I WILL be doing research in them. This is most exhilarating!

oseirus Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 hey I saw that someone had gotten accepted into the Columbia/LSE program ... if you are on this thread and don't want to ID yourself do you mind inboxing me? Please and thank you
Sigaba Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Poor training & poor upbringing? In all honesty I think I freaked out over it but anywhose here is the sitch. I was a visit & we were invited to sit in on a grad seminar & they were discussing & they said we could throw in our thoughts & ideas. Anywhose, one person raised a point, which I had counter to, so I raised my hand to bring up my point. However no one was recognizing my raised hand, so I basically started talking to the person who made the point in a side convo style. Then all of a sudden they asked me to share my point out loud. I asked the next day & the students all said it wasn't a big deal but I felt so bad & just flat out rude. I thought I could get away with it. If they want to rescinding their acceptance over that then I will surely understand BUT just know I am a vengeful person & I own a set of matches. I'd not worry about this incident too much in regards to contributing to a discussion. You just showed that you belong. However, you might want to keep an eye on the body language of professors (if not also the--ah--snarkier graduate students) when one engages in sidebar conversations. Every seminar is different. In some, adlibs, side bars, and stage whispers will be the name of the game. In others, such distractions may be taken the wrong way.
zb642 Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Well, I got my last decision today: rejection from NYU. So, Yale it is! Best of luck to everyone still making decisions, and congrats on getting through this grueling process.

I guess as sucky as a rejection from NYU (depending on your program), Yale is not a bad fallback I say. Enjoy New Haven!
crazedandinfused Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Well, I just met my top-choice POI and it went really well - I think. I was a little nervous and sweaty (it's a million degrees outside!!!!), but our interests align and I think I made good comments and observations. I'm just scared that I was awkward. I was star-struck!!
woodstein Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Longtime lurker, first time poster. Would anyone care to claim that shiny new acceptance from UGA? The applicant indicated that he/she received an email, but I was under the impression that the GS would be sending correspondence via snail mail. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

fawltyarrestedextras Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Anyone heard anything from the World & International History at Columbia? Oseirus, I read your post in the other thread— how do you know that someone has already been accepted? Cheers
crazedandinfused Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 (edited) Thanks Oseirus! The more I reflect and step away from my nervousness about it, the better I feel. @ Fawlty (Faulty? What's wrong with him?!) It's up there where it says Results Survey. Type history in the search box and you'll get our results plus those of a million art historians. I know that question was directed at Oseirus but I wanted a chance to comment on the awesomeness of your name and channel Mrs. Richards - Mrs. Alice Richards.
