Kelkel Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Seriously? Not the second week of February maybe?? I think like someone said last night (goldie probably!), tippy top applicants will probably hear second week. This probably includes the Northwestern acceptances since that's what the results survey says. A majority of my schools (again, according the the survey) release decisions mid to late February, so that's why I say after the 15th. Your schools might be different. I really do believe in the accuracy of the board (for a general timeline). I know I will probably start getting (even more) antsy during the second week of February, but I won't be surprised if I still haven't heard anything.
Curlicue Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I've noticed some schools offer consolation partially funded MA acceptance to PhD candidates they deny. Is that a common practice? Also, I applied to UT, but now I feel that I should have applied to their dual MA in Slavic Studies/Public Affairs. I want to e-mail the director of the East European institute to ask her about applying to that program, but she is probably the person I would want to work with if I do get into the history program there. Should I just let it lie until I receive my official notice? You guys are awesome, reading your insight the past few weeks has been extremely helpful!
TMP Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 If there isn't anything in your application that says something like "if your application isn't considered for the PhD, would you like to be considered for the MA or have your application transferred to a more appropriate department?", then you may need to wait a little and see what happens. Some programs will consider your application excellent but just don't have the spot and yet the POIs still want you and they have a terminal MA, they may offer. However, if they don't, you can very well ask upon receiving a letter of declination to be considered for the MA program. They'll be reviewing MA applications at that point anyway.
goldielocks Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 (edited) Trying to keep my mind off the sting of a likely Yale rejection and the anxiety of other apps has actually been remarkably good for my productivity. I am making strides in my reading, outlining remaining thesis chapters, making big batches of soup for the upcoming week, and even cleaning my apartment. I hope you all are enjoying similar effects! Thanks for that update, hadn't thought about the "downgraded" pool of applicants (if I may call it that) from the Phd to the MA. But what about funding, if such an offer is given? and also, am I right in assuming that even these tier-two MA applicants have to be notified by April 15?
Safferz Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Ok, we have to change subjects here. Two questions: Can any of the Africanists recommend a good survey history? I guess I'm looking for something pre-Berlin Conference if there isn't an all encompassing synthesis. Perhaps Oseirus can give better suggestions since he's interested in precolonial Africa, but my favourite overview is a tiny little book from Oxford University Press called "African History: A Very Short Introduction." John Iliffe's "Africans: The History of a Continent" is best if you're looking for something more detailed.
Sparky Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Thanks for that update, hadn't thought about the "downgraded" pool of applicants (if I may call it that) from the Phd to the MA. But what about funding, if such an offer is given? Well, there is UChicago's notorious "one-third tuition remission" MAPSS/MAPH offer. In general (there are probably a couple of *actual* exceptions), these are, well, "cash cow" MA programs. The point is to make money off people who totally fell in love when looking for PhD programs and can't see themselves anywhere else. This is not to say that some people don't go to those master's programs, have a great time, learn a lot, and position themselves well for a future app cycle. But...the programs typically exist to make money. StrangeLight 1
oseirus Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 So I'm on the road, forgot my tablet, & now my laptop is not working ... well this should make for an interesting week :-)

goldielocks Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 Has anyone else had a dream that they were accepted/rejected yet? I had a really, really realistic one last night, in which I was accepted to UIC. I think it was from the chatting I was doing on here before bed. It was incredibly realistic, and then I woke up, and it was 4:30 AM, and still January. Depressing. Also, have any of you thought about what you will do to celebrate if/when you get your first acceptance? If I get one, I fully intend to do this: wikichic, Safferz and goldielocks 3
crater21 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Hope your dream comes true goldie! I feel silly sharing this, but what the hey, we're among friends. I had a dream a couple of weeks ago that I received a letter from Yale. But, it was written in such complex, legalistic language that I couldn't figure out whether I had been accepted or rejected. Eventually, I had to get a lawyer to interpret it for me. But, I think I woke up before the lawyer could give his opinion! Hugely frustrating! I'm sure the material is rife with possibilities for psychoanalysis...
crazedandinfused Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Did you get a reply? Yes, thank you! I'm going to read African History: A Very Short Introduction. I just went through a whole bunch of results from last year's cycle and I only feel more anxious.......

goldielocks Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 Well you'll know soon about UIC because they already made decisions from what I understand! Whaaaaaat? This makes me both happy and sad.

I'm sure the material is rife with possibilities for psychoanalysis... I have had this dream, yes. But lately my dreams have been focused on failing my master's comp, which I take this May. :/ But I know that once the apps start rolling in (and, what do I see here, UCLA has admitted someone?), the app-related dreams will become more strong. woohooo.....:/ Yay for the new puppy to keep me centered!
dukelover50 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Finally Monday.....hopefully we hear SOMETHING. ANYTHING.
holdon Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Finally Monday.....hopefully we hear SOMETHING. ANYTHING. I say most of us hear nothing this week. Looking at last year, the likelihood for many schools is that next week is the big one. Some of the lucky ones may hear from POIs. But I say this is going to be the most agonizing, poisonous week yet.
Kelkel Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I'm still holding out hope for hearing from Notre Dame soon (re: interviews). Work is gonna suck today though. We had new carpet in and apparently the office is a wreck. Hooray physical labor!
ReallyNiceGuy Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 You know, I thought "I'm going to take my lightest loads during my last year as an undergrad so that I can 1) focus on apps in the fall and 2) not have too much to stress about during the spring." Now I regret that decision because it allows me more time to focus on rejections/acceptances. A Professor recently approached me and asked me to co-write an article with him based on research I had previously conducted; I have enough time that I've literally already completed that process, too. For better or worse I'm now officially a part of the "what the f!@* I want answers" group with the rest of you. Loimorpha...: are you attending school in Houston? Congratulations to whoever received an offer at UCLA.
sandyvanb Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I am so glad that I am teaching for four hours today because I won't be able to obsess while I teach...
oseirus Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Well today is here & schools should be getting to business by this time ... back in obsession mode!
oseirus Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Yes, thank you! I'm going to read African History: A Very Short Introduction. I just went through a whole bunch of results from last year's cycle and I only feel more anxious....... May I ask what the interest was?
Hopin'-n-Prayin' Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 (edited) Well today is here & schools should be getting to business by this time ... For real. I'm starting to wonder if any of these schools are fastidious enough for me anyway... I have sooo much work to do today...please mind, divert yourself away from here... crazedandinfused Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Congrats to the WashU and UCLA admits!
