Just got an acceptance from Columbia! Very nice personal email from my POI. Visiting students day is March 2, which shouldn't be a problem, since I already live in New York.

whoot!

Congrats to all the other acceptances today!

Russian and Eastern European History. The annoying part is that the FLAS office just contacted me last week to say that they had been in touch with the department and wanted another LOR addressing language abilities.

Thank you. I applied for the same program.

Congrats to the acceptances. Wow. Those are some big names. Some day, maybe we'll figure out some of the names behind these online pseudonyms and we'll be able to tell people we were freaking out alongside some bigwigs in our discipline...

Still no axe from Indiana yet. Since I'm not one of the people who obsessively called and emailed to check that my application was complete everywhere (though I have no reason to imagine its not) my current theory is that I haven't been rejected yet because they didnt know I applied. We'll see.

Safferz!!!!!!!!! Can I see your application? :) Whatever you did, you did something right! Big congratulations. You should be really proud of yourself Well done. Big congrats!

damn, you guys are doing good. congratulations to all the acceptances today!

to anyone getting rejections, don't worry: the job market is shitty, far worse than the chances of getting into a PhD program, so ultimately these programs are doing you a favour. plus, while you may think grad school is "the life," and while the work you do there is incredibly enjoyable and rewarding in and of itself, the pace of the work is soul-crushing. you won't even have free time to clean your apartment or wipe your butt properly because there's too much to do. you will never have a free day again, let alone a whole weekend. you won't be able to go have a beer with friends (friends? what friends?) or watch a stupid tv show because you'll feel so guilty about not doing all the work you should be doing instead of having fun. your non-grad student friends and partners will no longer be able to understand you, your grad student friends and partners will only ever talk about work, creating absolutely zero mental downtime. yes, getting paid to read books is awesome, but not when you find out that they superglue your eyelids open and make you read cultural studies gobbledygook.

(please read the above with the levity with which it is intended :) ).

Yes...and this is what I, for one, want. For some, the fun is in the work/research/writing. I'm taking this with the levity it is intended, but I'm also just clarifying that many applicants do know exactly what we are getting ourselves into and the rejections are still painful even though they might be doing us a favor...

I will get into a doctoral program, whether it is this time around or another time. It is my dream and it will be what I accomplish, job market be damned. Luckily I have a supportive partner (who has a PhD) who doesn't care about what the house looks like or if we go out a lot or if I make a ton of money. My partner just wants me to pursue my dream and understands what will be in store for me/us if/when I get accepted into a program. :)

Again, I'm not reacting negatively, just wanted to say "yes! this is what I want!" I might be nuts but...oh well. :P I have no children and will not be having any. I've got my partner, pets, and history. Life, for me, is great with those elements.

Now I just must wrangle the elusive doctoral program...

Wow, StrangeLight when did you start watching me (sheepishly eyes her apartment).

I'm one of the Columbia medievalist rejects. My POI said that they only gave an offer to 1 medievalist - what happens if that person doesn't accept? Does the school just not have a new medievalist that year?

I'm one of the Columbia medievalist rejects. I'm pretty sad about it, as it was the school I had the best feeling about. Anyway, my POI said that they only gave an offer to 1 medievalist - what happens if that person doesn't accept? Does the school just not have a new medievalist that year?

That's what waitlists are usually used for, but depends on the school how they work things. I have no idea with Columbia.

Very well said, AFB. I'm gonna be super-happy for you when you get in (I won't use the conditional but I also don't want to jinx you).

My Yale status is unchanged and I would totally think about a funded MA, but that's never gonna happen.

I hope crater21 gets the good news too (he did interview right?!). Very exciting day for many people.

Aw, thanks Kelkel. Yes, I did interview. But, sadly, I haven't heard back, so I am assuming that I didn't get it.

I think everyone who was accepted heard from the DGS today, and I wasn't among that. I think rejections will come next week.

But, serious congrats to everyone who got in!! :)

And add a rejection to UCSC to my ever-building pile of rejections.

I think it is time I throw in the towel on this round and say that I've been rejected across the board because I don't think that Stanford and Berkeley are, like, holding back on giving me great news...so...

Same with UW:S and ASU.

If I didn't have an alcoholic parent that effed up our family, I would start drinking.

Pessimistic? Yes. FML.

Congratulations Yale and Columbia acceptances!

I've got radio silence from Columbia over here, so this news is making me bite my fingernails with new investment.

Feels like this week is going to be a doozy!

Safferz, I am going to give you my crown of laurels that I've been wearing since I got into OSU and Wisconsin (with AMAZING package) because, god dammit, you deserve these incredible acceptances!

Now, go get drunk :D

Congrats to other Yale and Columbia acceptances. Wow, programs are really moving this week to claim their top students!

As for the rest of you, February isn't over yet. You may not get in your dream programs but what do you really what? Simply a funded acceptance anywhere, or wait another time to try the top programs again? (I'll start working on my inspiration essay...).

I'm a non-drinker, but the crown sounds nice :D Thanks TMP, and congrats on your acceptances!!

Best of luck to everyone over the next few days and weeks. I started off with a rejection from Northwestern, so stay optimistic and remember that it's still pretty early in the process!
