wmplax Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Who posted the Stanford info claiming that all calls have been made? The lag between boards contributes much to the tension...
whirlibird Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Maybe it s just my trip as a "methodologist" but isn t it a too strong assumption that the notifications that are posted on gradcafé actually represent the true population well? I mean, if stanford accepts say twenty people on average and last year ten people posted acceptances and this year four, what can we seriously derive from that? actually i don t have a clue what might be the proportion of applicants that post their results on this site, though i am sure that acceptances are overrepresented as compared to rejects. not that its all that important, but still... Well, as some have pointed out, the self-selection bias of gradcafe that yields the same "we're all applying to top 10s and we've all got perfect GREs etc." image that thus spawns response threads like "Those not applying exclusively to top 15 schools" is the same that also explains why there are many more results posted in the survey from higher-ranked programs than from lesser-known/lower-ranked programs. The population of gradcafe is not representative of the entire population of grad school applicants; it attracts more of those who are more obsessive, are perfectionists, etc. because it provides information that they're looking for. So, all that to say that it's reasonable to assume that more acceptances would be posted to top schools (that assumption's also consistent with past years' posted results) based upon the correlations therein. Gradcafe is fascinating. (It's also amazing/appalling what anonymity can inspire people to say...case in point the issues certain posters have been having with one another...)
wmplax Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Who posted the Stanford info claiming that all calls have been made? The lag between boards contributes much to the tension... Edit: Also, I know for a fact--I spoke with a member of Stanford's adcom last year--that they usually admit somewhere between 20-25 in the hopes of claiming a pool of 15 or so; if the post is accurate, then the vast, vast majority of electable candidates did not come from this board (which, I suppose, is plausible), though I would have imagined at least 1 or 2 more claims here. Strikes me as odd, either way.
ginsburg Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I find the Stanford post quite convincing actually, there weren't many Stanford admissions posted in previous cycles, only about 5-6 reports on result search in 2010 and 2011. So if they only accept 13 this year, we've already seen 5 acceptances up there onsurvey, it may very likely be a done deal.....

So if they only accept 13 this year, we've already seen 5 acceptances up there onsurvey, it may very likely be a done deal..... I suppose this could be accurate--by the same logic, Yale is out as well. Ironically, I'm heading to work out in Stanford's main gym right now.
ginsburg Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I would say it's different for Yale. Yale has almost the largest number of admissions and incoming students each year among top 10 schools. By far there're only 2 posts, it's definitely not done yet.
Helix Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I'm not quite prepared to consider not hearing anything yet a rejection. There didn't seem to be very many Yale interviews posted, which makes me think they might be for the purposes of a university fellowship or they just haven't contacted everyone yet. I'd think there'd be many more if they set up interviews with everyone they might admit. In the interest of keeping hope alive on Yale, did anyone who got an interview want to share their subfields? I'm thinking that interview scheduling probably depends on faculty availability so it might not be the end, just the ones whose interviewer has timing constraints? (cue naive optimism)
RWBG Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 On representativeness of gradcafe: It's a bit unscientific, but gradcafe posted 26% of the total number of acceptances to Michigan, and 10% of the total rejections. I'm sure that entails two kinds of selection bias; first, the skew towards strong applicants at The Grad Cafe, and second, the greater likelihood of posting an acceptance than a rejection. In any event, I feel like 1/4 of the total acceptances is a fairly good way to get a rough sense of expected numbers, with some obvious random variation around it. By that metric, I think the Stanford numbers look like they make sense, but the Yale numbers look somewhat fewer than they should be, especially if the interviews are more than an obligatory call before the applicant is admitted (i.e. if the interviews are actually used as part of the process of admissions, meaning that more interviews are given than applicants admitted).
PoliSciEntist Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Long time lurker, first time poster. Hi all, feels like I know you already (admittedly, that sounded creepy). Decided I'd finally join in properly to let people know that UNC have just accepted me via email (comparative) and that people should not count themselves out yet.
RWBG Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 You are all incredibly kind to post a response! My discipline is IR and methods, but I am interested specifically in working with Will Moore. Of course, I'll know more after I visit, but you've quieted my concerns about being able to fine a placement after graduating. I am wait listed at UNC and haven't heard back from the dual PhD at Notre Dame in poli sci and peace studies, but I'm hearing that I should be grateful for FSU - it's a solid choice and not a risk. Thanks to all of you! Good luck with the rest of this difficult process! For IR and Methods, FSU seems like a great choice. twenty-twelve 1
brent09 Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Hey all: just wanted to say thanks for making the waiting game bearable. My season is over, just have to decide on a school. I'll check back in on everyone because I'm very excited to see how things turn out for all of you. After obsessively reading and posting for the past couple of months, though, I need a nice breather. Good luck, all! And don't let this tergellian take any more of your time. This whole affair crossed the line into ridiculous a long time ago. Stay strong! grantman Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Alright in order to lighten up the mood around here I pose a question. What luxury car will you buy once you become a professor. For me it is a toss-up between a Jaguar and a BMW. Anyone else want to chime in?
Gradhorn Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Considering the typical salary of an assistant professor, I'd say a five year old Honda Civic. adaptations, wuerzburg and edost 3

For me it is a toss-up between a Jaguar and a BMW. Anyone else want to chime in? I think only professors in Econ, Law and Business departments make that kind of cash. But by the age of 45 I hope to have enough saved for a BMW 5 series. Edited February 12, 2012 by kolja00
ohsnap Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I'l take a Lexus GS350, please. I don't know enough about BMWs and Jags and the like to determine whether or not I'd like having one. The fiancé (a finance/econ guy) wants a BMW M.
Tamboursg'sell Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Finally a question worth answering. I'll go for a classic Porsche 911 from the 70s. Because I believe there are cars and there is the 911. It's the 911, by the way, who made me believe in Plato's idealism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_911_classic whirlibird 1

Hotspur Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I already have a BMW 3-Series wagon. It was, however, made 5 years before I even began high school. To give more accurate picture of its age, I have had 5 years of work experience since finishing college--so I'm not sure you could exactly classify it as 'new.' You could, however, accurately classify it as 'rusting.' wuerzburg 1
grantman Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Glad to see some people participating in my question, I hope it eased some tensions. To be more specific on which car I would not mind buying would either be a BMW Z-4 or a Jaguar XJ. Furthermore, with tomorrow starting possibly the most hectic week of notifications I just wanted to wish you all the very best of luck. I know you will become great scholars in your own right. whirlibird and chaetzli 2

balledematch Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Nervous, but incredibly excited about the upcoming week. I hope everyone on this board is greeted with fantastic news--even as the weather gets colder, as it has in my neck of the woods. Fight On! chaetzli 1
