Doctorwho, check out this thread: http://www.poliscijobrumors.com/topic.p ... 166&page=2

There's an interesting (and hope-inspiring) comment by a faculty member about applicants with children... The question is...did I mention to the adcoms that I've got a kid? Hmmmm...

Interesting discussion of family and how much prior experience matters in that linked thread. Noting that there are a wide variety of students enrolled in PhD programs, I think the only conclusion I can draw is that adcomms value a variety of qualifications. It was definitely heartening to hear about the department that kept statistics and concluded that people with my profile - i.e. "older" [30], with kid(s) - correlate with high success rates. Woohoo!

Now to get accepted... :-)

Scout (mormegil) -

Any word from Brown? The canary has a strange beak and the pasta has been exhumed. The corpse is now spreading its wings while the eagle flies at midnight. Awaiting further orders.

- AFU (spy)

Going by previous years I expect Brown to be out around the fag end of this month and definitely by March 1st week. I would be surprised if a school like Brown with such huge endowments cut intake significantly.

Last night (local time) I didn't get their DGS on phone. They are obviously very busy this time of the year. I will try tonight again.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Another theorist popping out of the woodwork, in fact!

It's immensely forbidding to see so many smart and qualified applicants on here. I've only applied to a few programmes (Political Theory specialism) and I'm sort of operating on the "assume it won't happen" philosophy.

That said, I'm hyped about the possibility of NYU notifying by the end of the week.

I've also applied to Brandeis (am I the only one?) - now they traditionally respond quite quickly, don't they?

Brandeis has really small class sizes each year, no?

Brandeis admits roughly 5 students each year. I don't know if there is slight variation annually but that is what is stated on their website. I applied there myself this year as well. I e-mailed the DGS but have not heard back anything from him.

Premonition: Duke today. No inside info. Just a lot of bad dreams.

 I've had nothing but nightmares since I've started this process. I'm sure they only get worse once we step foot in the classroom in the fall.

Oh dear! In fact, didn't Duke send out their notifications on the 12th, which happened to be a Tuesday as well? Now you've started my Tuesday full of worries, just like all the other days.

Admin at Brandeis is usually very approachable, but actual faculty are more difficult. But it's such a small program I would have thought the admissions decisions would take somewhat less time.

That said, if I read their statistics correctly (the entire Brandeis politics site seems out of date) they seem to matriculate exactly as many students as they accept. Which is impressive. Are they only accepting candidates whom they're reasonably confident will choose to attend (as opposed to picking a more prestigious school)? Or is the welcoming package so awesome that no one feels they can turn it down?

Eh, three posts about NWU is not enough to make me freak out. I'd keep calm for now. We'll likely know by Thursday or Friday who is in and who is out.

Dude, you have already got admits from a couple of places. Compared to me you're in zen like peace. :D

This is true Mormegil, I apologize. I just don't want you guys freaking out when I think that there are still many positive decisions to be made at NWU.

Nah man. It's cool. No scenario for apologies. Some of us do tend to get a bit anxious and hyper just fooling around gradcafe all day. :P

Anyone else hopeful for Berkeley or Stanford today?

Personally, I'm still freaking out about Yale because they enjoy teasing my soul.

I tend to believe Stanford will be Thursday, but Berkeley should be any day now. It is 830 in the morning in CA. They are just starting to drink their coffee and sit down to their desks.

I want some good news, and preferably before my 7pm Basketball game that I have tickets for.

I'm hoping Stanford will finally break radio silence today. Thursday feels pretty far away at the minute
