ivandub
Actually it now seems there may be... five people interviewing via Skype? Something confusing about the webpage where we're asked to sign up for interview times. And no, I have no idea how many finalists there are in total. Seems like thanks to time zone difficulties, I'll be doing mine in the middle of the night, just to make things even more pleasant...
squarerootof
I have decided that knowledge is not power. Pynchonette
I have decided that knowledge is not power. I haven't heard anything, I don't know what it means, and I'm pretty sure this website is the devil. I had hope twenty minutes ago. Keep your chin up. If you haven't heard anything than that proverbial fat lady has not yet sung. I too have not heard anything from any of the 11 programs I applied for, and have actually now limited myself to checking these boards only once every 24 hours to keep form falling into anxious misery. Something good will happen yet -- I know it!

veniente
Argh, Duke English - my first rejection. The first cut isn't the deepest; however, the last cut will be if I go 0/12. I'm trying to forget my disappointment by thinking about what it would actually be like to live in Durham, NC. Pynchonette

lolopixie
Durham has the highest murder rate in NC -- if that makes any of the non-accepted feel better. Not sure if that helps the accepted. I would stand to say that I would whisk that fun fact right out the window had I applied and been accepted.

[morbid] That stat would probably cheer up the waitlisters moreso than the non-accepteds [/morbid]. vordhosbntwin
just like hyde park (chicago), new haven (yale), and many other schools!
koolherc
I never felt in danger in Durham, at any and all hours. Same with Hyde Park for that matter. A lot of these schools have vicious policies of gentrification that exacerbate poverty and (thus) crime.
vordhosbntwin
same; i was at duke this past semester, have lived nearby my whole life for that matter. and i took a class at the u of c - i never felt unsafe.
Origin=Goal
Indeed, universities tend to gentrify communities, pushing impoverished communities elsewhere and erecting gates vis-a-vis high rent and cost of living-- part of the reason I would rather not live in a college town or university part of town. But this is not to say that the latter areas are, in fact, safe: my university town had high amounts (relative to the population) of on campus hate crimes, the largest police force in the state per capita, and a disturbingly high number of rapes and sexual assaults (not even counting all of the ones in fraternity parties that never go reported). vordhosbntwin
so it seems that duke is accepting 6 this year, out of the 15 invited to the interview. i'm almost certain that i won't be attending duke, so i suppose that now that's 14.... Enzian
I think that brings the other interviewees' chances up from 40% to something like 43% (though I don't know how to use math and that's probably wrong). Three cheers for vordhosbntwin! I'm off to the 43% Confidence of Acceptance thread.
