nimo6211 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) I decided I'm going to go to San Jose's Mental Health/Health option 2-year. I had done a lot of thinking the past month and oddly my first choice changed from CSUDH to SJSU and although I hate to leave LA because I'm so comfortable here and it's so warm lol, It's worth it for me! So now there will be a spot for someone at CSUDH! If anyone is going to SJSU remind me, I can't remember the 2 who had got in earlier, I'll go searching when i have the time perhaps! Welcome to Northern CA. I am happy you chose SJSU. They have an excellent program. My niece is an undergrad junior- psch major @ SJSU. You will love it in San Francisco. It is a beautiful city and the weather more pleasant than LAs Good luck. Oh and I think they have a stipend of $18500 for mental health that you can apply for in the 2nd year, but you are bonded to work for public mental health agencies for a year after you graduate. SFSU has the same, so I assume it applies to all CSUs. Edited May 2, 2012 by nimo6211

Oh and I think they have a stipend of $18500 for mental health that you can apply for in the 2nd year, but you are bonded to work for public mental health agencies for a year after you graduate. SFSU has the same, so I assume it applies to all CSUs. Thanks! Although I did grow up in Eureka California, so I am from the "real" northern california LOL. I moved here about ...oh gosh 2003 when I graduated high school, but it will be my first time living around the bay area. I won't be living in San Francisco though, I'll be in San Jose right near the school I hope. Too expensive in SF for me and I want to be able to bike/walk to school if at all possible! I am very happy though that I can visit SF, that will be much fun and I have friends there too. So I think I'll have even nicer weather in San Jose in terms of warmth, but still not as warm on average as here. I hate the pollution (compared to humboldt it's horrible) but have grown to love the sun being out umm pretty much every day with a lovely temperature I'm sure you'll love SFSU's program and thanks for posting your stats for us all to check out, good advice you gave. And yes you're right, SJSU offers the mental health stipend, the number each school offers differs between each cal state as the funding changes each year, It's very competitive, but I'll at least try, I mean why not...what a great opportunity! I would love to have to commit a year for $18,500. Either way I hope to get licensed eventually and land a job that will be in an underserved area in CA and be able to earn loan forgiveness then too.
annzie Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) Hi all, Have been following your conversations for a month now. Thank you for helping me stay sane during the waiting process. I just found out via SFSU's website today that I have been accepted. That was a real curve ball. I also talked to Lyn at CSU EB today and she said they're currently reviewing February applicants and that I (who applied in Feb. but had a hiccup that didn't register my application complete until March) would not hear for another couple weeks. CSU EB had been my top choice after getting rejected from Berkeley until I got into SFSU today (which would have been my top choice, but I just didn't think I stood a chance of getting in). Any insights into whether or not it would be worth going to CSU EB over SFSU? Do you know if one carries more weight than the other when it comes to getting jobs? Any advice? A little background: I was an English major at a prestigious private college, 3.7 gpa, did Peace Corps working in agriculture afterward, have volunteered but have no paid social services experience, applied to and was rejected from UCB and SFSU last year, volunteered at a hospital and Hospice this last year. Again, thank you all for keeping me sane. _________________________________ Applied: UCB, Portland State, Sac State, SFSU, CSU EB Rejected: UCB Waitlisted: Portland State, Sac State Accepted: SFSU! allyba Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) @annzie-SFSU is an excellent school. I've never heard a complaint about the quality of the program. Congrats on getting in. I didn't apply there because I lived in SF for a bit and didn't feel I wanted to do it again (needed somewhere new- I love SF tho) but, I would really lean towards going to this program if everything else fits for you. The campus itself is also very nice which helps if you are going to spend a lot of time there. They also have the healthiest food options of all the state schools I have seen (also important if you are on campus a lot.). I've had great carrot juice, burritos, bagel sandwiches with sprouts and veggies there etc. SF rents are higher and it is much easier to just find a decent bedroom to rent than to find your own place that you can afford. If you live near one of the muni lines or the 28 bus though, you may not need to drive to school and if your placement is near public trans, you may not have to drive at all. That would save some money. CSUEB is also a great program from what I have heard. Good placements and a high percentage of ppl get a job in the field after graduation. Another thing to think about is the difference between semester and quarters. CSUEB has the quarter system. Some people like it and others feel that you don't get sufficient time with the material for each class. Edited May 2, 2012 by allyba
futurelcsw Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 She said that they would be talking about it with the committee within the next week or two, so I'm assuming we should expect to hear back from them within that time. I chose the two year CYF program as my number 1, but I let them know that I wouldn't mind the 3-year if it came down to it. (I made it clear the the 2 year was my preference though, but I guess I'd settle for the 3 year if it came down to it.) I chose the OAF concetration, but either would be fine, really. I REALLY want the full time program, but I said I would like to be considered for the three year too. I might as well, I would have to wait a year to reapply anyway so I might as well being working toward that goal! Ugh I want to hear really soon. They have kept us waiting FOREVER!
aalariemy Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Anyone know how the waitlist works at Sacramento state? They won't tell me my rank, what are the next steps from here?
Sacstatehopeful Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Anyone know how the waitlist works at Sacramento state? They won't tell me my rank, what are the next steps from here? I found out I was wait listed as well today. I work with a woman that graduated from sac states MSW program and she was wait listed. She found out in June she was accepted and that was about 7 years ago :/ It seems to me it would depend on where we are on the wait list. I'm not sure why they won't tell us what number we are. Kind of disappointing to say the least.
angelamarie32 Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 I got in to SFSU! just got a letter in the mail yesterday! I really didnt think I would get in since they only take 25 and theres so many applications, and I'm only 23, but I did! Yay! I am really stuck trying to decide SFSU or SJSU. As of now I'm totally lost. Help? I live in North Oakland and don't plan to move to San Jose, so SF would be the better option for commuting. Also I know SF's program is highly social justice and direct practice oriented, and the cohort is super tiny (only 25!) so I would get alot of individual attention. Its a super competitive program from what I understand and I feel lucky to have gotten in. Finally I'm planning to try to get the MH stipend my second year, and I probably will get it at SF since there's so little competition. I have several friends in the MSW program there who love it, but the budget cuts are awful: there is only one concentration (Individuals, families and groups) and few (if none) elective classes However, I have a special interest in working with monolingual spanish speakers, and SJSU has a class specifically designed for that (Spanish for Social Work), as well as a study abroad opportunity for a summer in mexico. They seem to have a much bigger cohort, four concentrations, and waaay more class electives for the second year. But the commute (two hours from where I live by train) would suck and I dont know the school at all. SJSU was my safety school. Help me! I have to decide ASAP!

But the commute (two hours from where I live by train) would suck and I dont know the school at all. SJSU was my safety school. Help me! I have to decide ASAP! Hey, Congrats! That's really great. I would first have to ask you what your chosen concentration is a SJSU as this should play a big part in which school you want to attend as well! Did you choose school/mental health&health/Aging/Child&family? And what are your biggest goals, or where do you see yourself enjoying to work the most? Since your second year will be specific to that concentration you'll gain more experience as you know in that field. I'd say driving two hours is crazy, but i know people who went twice a week from LA to UCSB (like 3 to 3.5 hours)! You'd only have to drive to campus two days a week both years, and you can choose to ask for a field internship that is in oakland maybe or for sure you can ask for SF because my questionnaire for SJSU had me state where I'd prefer (not guaranteed) to have my field work and it said "ie SF, San Jose, Monterey" so you could possibly have it up in oakland too or closer at least! That would really help you out. I'd call up SFSU and ask how many people were accepted this year since there was debate on this forum about whether it was 25 again or they upped it to 75 or something. Or really, just ask how big your class sizes are because sometimes how many are accepted doesn't really mean your class size at all. SJSU has the cohorts, and abt. 150 each year are accepted but that means abt. 37 per concentration but those are split between full time and part time it seems like, and they mentioned that they may have to be cutting that number back because of budget cuts, so really this year could be less at SJSU as well. And the second year you're with not the cohort, but people in your specialty only. I'd also call SFSU and ask how many mental health stipends they expect to have this year, everything's up in the air and they may not know for sure, but they also may have a good idea...but I can imagine if they had a huge cut to their program over the past few years that they might offer less stipends. I know their website says 40 for the child welfare stipend, which is a lot but I think they're big on that and I think they say 10ish for the mental health but not positive. Either way, I know I would not want to commute even twice a week for 4 hours a day!! yikes. Would you not be able to move if it became to difficult? It's a difficult decision, and I wish you the best of luck! I would say make a list of the most important things to you like distance and stress from commuting, call SJSU and ask if they have fieldwork in oakland or near by, what topic you really want to focus on etc. and compare stipend chances etc.

nimo6211 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Hey ! Am I the only one to still wait for an answer from SFSU ?? Thanks ~ Hi: Maybe you should contact SFSU and find out what is going on. I am already getting interviews for internships. Eileen Levy signed my letter. She is the Director. You could also call the department @ 415-338-1003 (if you don't already have it). Good luck.
crazystacyyyyy Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Hey ! Am I the only one to still wait for an answer from SFSU ?? Thanks ~ I still havent heard back either. Already accepted UCLA anyway, but this is ridiculous!
manubarack Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 If you're accepted UCLA then GO !! (btw you shall be accepted SFSU too...)
Sacstatehopeful Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 I have been accepted off the sac state msw wait list! I'm so excited!!!
aalariemy Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Hey sacstatehopeful! congrats on getting in!!! How did you find out you got in? and what are your stats if you mind sharing them?
Sacstatehopeful Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Hey sacstatehopeful! congrats on getting in!!! How did you find out you got in? and what are your stats if you mind sharing them? I received an email from Irma with four attachments. One was the actual acceptance letter stating I needed to complete my biology requirement prior to August 24 (which I already did), the acceptance form, a code of ethics, and a schedule of classes required for the next four semesters. My stats are the following: Graduated from UC Davis in 2008 with a 3.3 overall with my bachelors in psychology. I had about 9 concentrated sociology classes that qualified for social work classes in diversity because I almost double majored in sociology but decided against because I wanted to graduate early. I have six years paid work experience in mental health ranging in working with children ages 0-5 and transition age youth (my most current position). I had two years volunteer experience as a peer counselor at UC Davis where I also held a supervisory position. My LOR came from my current program manager, my former program manager and a clinical supervisor at my current job. I had my stats requirement completed but did not take the right biology class so I just completed an 8 week bio class at a community college. Good Luck!! I hope you receive a letter soon!

Evvgalvez Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I applied to CSUN's MSW program satellite 3 yr program in Ventura. The application deadline was May 1st, it was a last minute decision so I applied in April. Does anyone know when I'd hear back? Classes start in August, I'm constantly checking my email too!
Mani Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Hey i applied for MS in CSULB & CSUF , got accepted in both . Anyone else from the same ??
lalaloopsy Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi all!! Â I am feeling very insecure about my MSW chances. Can anyone give me some gpa quotes for SJSU or CSUSB??? I only applied to two schools like a loser, and have a 3.5 undergrad...3.7 dept. GPA, i have like 5 years of work experience in the field as well, but its kind of old :-(.. Â Â Can anyone help me? Im freaking out! I know my GPA is low, but i went to a top school that wanted to make life ridiculous for me? Does the prestige of undergrad institution even matter when they look at GPA? Â AHH! Â Okay, sorry for the long post! Thank you all for reading.... i mean ...if anyone is still reading :-/
talkinlikeateen Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I applied to two CSU's - CSULB and SFSU. I submitted CSULB's the first week of December and I was admitted a week and a half later. However, a few classmates turned theirs in the following week and still haven't received any word. I think I just picked an excellent time to drop it off. I'm sure they received a lot of applications while out of the office for the holidays, and it's only going to get worse until the deadline as they do receive a lot of applications. SFSU said I would get word in April, but I'm not really worried as CSULB was my first choice anyhow.
