briefinterviews Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I just got my acceptance email from Washington as well, but I'm fairly certain I'll be heading to Berkeley
Whitty Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I just got into University of Washington as well!! I'm definitely going! It is the highest ranked program I applied to (over UCBerk and UNC) ! I'm ecstatic!!
SunsetHarbor Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Congrats to everyone who posted, I also just got UW acceptance email - waiting to hear on financial aid. Any one heard about timeline? This is my first choice for sure!! Just nervous about the cost.
NatalieMSW Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I'm deciding between UDenver, Boston University, and Portland State. Still haven't heard from Portland State yet. Anyone have any suggestions on a program? Accepted: Rhode Island College, Catholic University, New York University, Boston University, University of Denver, Simmons College, Denied: University of Washington, University of Wisconsin-Madison Applied/Waiting: Portland State University, San Francisco State Deciding Between: Boston U, Denver, Portland State
Whitty Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I thought for sure I was heading to WashU but UGA offered a generous assistantship package and UNC is dynamite... sigh very tough choices.
mhatchMSW2014 Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I just got back from a visit to University of Denver (they all call it DU) for the accepted students. Did you go? Honestly, I have very positive things to say about the program, but I'm not convinced it's the right fit for me with the location and size of the program (roughly 180 students - 60 of which will be advanced standing). It's probably the most homogenous of the schools I've visited but their curriculum and certain professors (like Stephen von Merz in the Latino certificate program) are working to improve upon the diversity. It's also the most flexible of the programs; they would find a way to cater the program to my interests. All sounds great, right? My other choices are New York (Fordham or Columbia - much better reputation nationwide and internationally if I want to practice internationally) and U MD - Baltimore. All three are bigger cities and on the east coast where I'm closer to family and friends. I'm supposed to give Columbia my decision on Monday but Fordham and Maryland still haven't given me a response! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Denver.
KristinMSW Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 I feel the exact same way about DU! I didnt go to the welcome day, but im from the area and have visited a couple times in the process to get a feel for the program. Parts of it do seem great, and i agree they make it very flexible which is really nice. But i have not been the most impressed with it overall. It just seems like a big, pricey program that they accept a bunch of students into. I feel like they really try to sell you on it and make it seem like they really want you, but as a private shcool they can afford to do that! In the end I think I'm going with university of washington... it just seems like a better overall program and in a city with more diversity and more to offer. And even with a $16,000/year scholarship from du, UW will still win financially too! Good luck with your decision!!
SunsetHarbor Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I am currently deciding between U Washington - which looks amazing and waiting on Portland State. Have you heard anything about financial aid from UW? I think Portland notifications go out by end of month. Out-of-state at both schools is fairly expensive.
KristinMSW Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 UW was my first choice between DU and PSU, so at this point PSU isnt really on my radar. Plus I am just annoyed that we havent heard a peep from them, and that we find out so late. Since all of the stuff to confirm enrollment is due April 15th at UW, are you just going to say yes to them and still wait on PSU? And you are right, the out of state tuition isn't cheap at either, but it also doesnt seem to be terrible compared to a lot of schools! I don't have a good in-state option in CO (the only one is like a commuter-type program), so I kind of knew i would be paying out of state or private tuition...
NatalieMSW Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 What do you guys think about the reputation of Boston University versus Portland State. While Portland appears to be a cheaper city the University's endowment is less than impressive. I heard BU has great job placement options. However, I have never lived away from the east coast and it could be a good experience. Any advice?
footballfan90 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Regarding DU, how much of a disadvantage do I have as far as admission/scholorships go for applying a month and a half AFTER the priority deadline? I submitted my application in the first week of March, and I am wondering how many people they typically admit in the spring/summer.
katiemk1230 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 (edited) Regarding DU, how much of a disadvantage do I have as far as admission/scholorships go for applying a month and a half AFTER the priority deadline? I submitted my application in the first week of March, and I am wondering how many people they typically admit in the spring/summer. I think it depends on how many people have declined offers. As far as admission goes, I have heard it's not terribly competitive. I declined my offer of admission (It's a great program, I just chose one that would be a better fit for me) about a month ago, so there's at least one spot potentially open now! They're really expensive, so I think that might have something to do with why they admit a lot of people - they probably know a good chunk of people won't attend due to cost. However, I don't know if it works this way -- but maybe it's possible that if say, 20 people decline their offers, all with small scholarships, that they might have more money left over now to give to new applicants? When you get your admission letter, you will be notified in that letter of any *merit* based scholarships, and then you will receive any other scholarship information in your financial aid letter. I believe they started sending out financial aid letters mid-march, so you would probably get yours soon after an admission decision. In any case, you should know soon what the verdict is - they are very good at getting back to people a.s.a.p. with decisions. Good luck!!! Edited April 9, 2012 by katiemk1230
Emily H. Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Hi there- I applied at DU's GSSW in December, went complete in January and am just waiting to hear back. I know this thread has been inactive for awhile but I was wondering where you all were able to find a status checker on their website? I'm not seeing one. Maybe it was removed :-) Thanks so much!
dawn321 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Hi Emily..I posted the same message on my original topic but wanted to be sure you saw it...so here it is, copied and pasted:   HI! I initially applied Oct 4 since I wanted to be first (yea, I am nuts like that)...then realized they did not have all my information so it was actually completed on Nov 17th. I was hoping for the 4-6 week waiting period and ended up getting my letter this week (Jan 22). So the wait was about 8 weeks...I do believe it is because of the holidays that were in between my application date. I am super excited, but moving across the country is so nerve wrecking. I am going out to Denver in April to try to find an apartment and hopefully secure my placement. If you check on the website you applied on, it will also update when the decision was made...Good Luck and keep us posted..would love to know someone when I get out there. I am also doing the animal assisted program!
Emily H. Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Hi Dawn- I was just accepted today via their website! I am very excited. I have not been to Denver before and would like to visit the school and also look around for housing. I am coming from Texas so it is quite a big move for me too but I'm excited for a new adventure. Hope to meet you in the future! callyw22 1

Hope to meet you in the future!  Emily, congrats! Can you elaborate more on what the website said? The only thing that has changed on mine is there are two boxes at the bottom, one saying Accept offer of admission and Decline offer of admission. Is that what yours says? Not sure how to interpret mine.
Emily H. Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Yes, that is all mine says as well. But others who were accepted in the past said that is how they initially knew they were accepted before receiving an email or letter. Yesterday the status said ready for review- now that is gone and the two buttons appeared. : )

Still waiting to hear back from other schools, but we might be headed to the same placeÂ

When was your application complete day wise? I'm in the same boat. Applied in December and it went complete in January. Also, Denver is an awesome place, I have no doubt that you'll love it!

dawn321 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Woohoo more people heading to Denver! Any of you doing the Animal Assisted program? My wife and I are heading out there in April to look for housing...so scary to be moving cross country but exciting. I am hoping to confirm my acceptance with the $300 this week.Â

paige_elizabeth10 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 And when did you find out?  I checked my online status thing this weekend, so I guess I "unofficially" found out on the 27th. By unofficial I mean I am still not 100 percent sure I got in--I'll feel better about it once I get an email or letter!

I think my last recommendation later was submitted the 4th, and it was considered complete and ready for review on the 8th! So I should be find out unofficially within the next few days! Thanks for your help!

Also, Denver is an awesome place, I have no doubt that you'll love it! I sent in my application Christmas Eve and went complete January 9 after my last letter of recommendation was received. I too will feel better once receiving an official acceptance! DU was the only graduate school I applied to so I am very excited. I have my BA in Political Science and have been accepted to several law schools but I wasn't/ am not so sure that is the path for me. I still love politics but honestly can not say I see myself content ten years down the road as an attorney, I have such a greater passion in helping others, especially children, in need. I hope you hear soon, Barley!Â
