In my SOP to Indiana University, I called it "the University of Indiana." Tried to tell myself that they get it all the time...

That'd be a pretty petty thing for them to dock you on. Wouldn't worry about it. :)

Welp, there goes my top choice.

Does anyone else feel embarrassed for earnestly applying to top-notch schools like Michigan and actually thinking you had a shot? Even though it was an absolutely perfect fit, I guess I just can't compete with the big boys.

I felt this way whenever I started upon the list of schools to which I was applying (haha, have applied...it's all in the past now), I usually used Michigan in order to trick people into believing I had a safety school. Oh well, this was round one for me and I probably only now grasp the gravity of graduate school applications. Also for various reasons I didn't bother to apply to any MA programs, so there's round 2.1 potentially there. down but not out, right?

Ugh. I too was already having a horrible Monday, complete with getting yelled at via email by a parent about their kid's grade (I teach high school English). More than ever I needed to either hear something good from PhD programs (to comfort me that I won't be teaching at this level forever), or hear NOTHING AT ALL. Blah.

I applied to the joint PhD in English and Women's Studies though, so I'm going to pretend that's on a slightly different timeline...

I'm also hoping for a separate timeline. Fingers crossed for you!

Aaaand some encouragement for the teachery side of things! This tumblr is sometimes not heteronormative and weirdly makes me feel better when teaching demoralizes me: http://heygirlteacher.tumblr.com/.

Amazing and funny website! Thank you! That actually does help make me feel better :)

Heeey, all you joint English/Women's Studies PhD people - WE STILL HAVE HOPE!

Just got this email back from Aimee Germaine, the graduate director for Women's Studies at U. Michigan:

"The joint program notifications have not yet gone out. We expect decisions to be released within the next week."

(Not sure if that means this week or next week, but I'm not complaining at this point since I feel like I temporarily dodged a bullet.)

I'm personally very relived although still sure that I won't get accepted (it's always been my snowball's chance in hell application with the 2 people accepted out of who knows how many applications). Thank you for checking on that!

Ah you are my best friend right now! I'm about 99% positive if my snowball's chance in hell occurs I won't accept since I have been fortunate enough to receive great offers that fit my interests better, but there's still a desire to be wanted (to be the object of the Other's desire). Hmm, a paper on the psychoanalysis of graduate school admissions...

This is awesome news. Thanks for emailing! I'm a scaredy-cat about those things and would not have had the gumption.

I saw this on the results board from yesterday re: English PhD:

Saw that admissions decisions had been made, called the office and they confirmed that my not hearing meant no. Sad, but what can you do? Go Blue.

So, we have no reason to hold out a sliver of hope, right? Adding another notch in my "implicit rejections" belt. :\

I see an English rejection for Michigan on the results board. Is that supposed to be an "English and Women's Studies" result, or have they emailed rejections to some?

No rejections yet on the joint English/WS front (it'll probably be a week or so since they just did acceptanced), so that must be an English rejection. Not looking to getting that envelope eventually...*sigh*

FWIW, I'm English and haven't heard a thing from them yet. I'm definitely assuming implicit rejection, though.

Yesterday was acceptances. Today was waitlists. Let me guess, tomorrow is rejections? :(

I still haven't heard back yet... Are people hearing via e-mail?

I keep getting slightly disconcerted when I keep seeing people get accepted while I still haven't heard a word..

For accepted Michigan ppl (English) - did they say anything about a visiting weekend? I got waitlisted and might be interested in visiting if I am lucky enough to get in.

Just got the rejection from the WGS and English joint program. Thank goodness; now I'm done for the year! The rejection email was incredibly sympathetic. I felt like I should be consoling them:

"It may console you to know that we received quite a large number of applications for admission to the Joint Ph.D. program. Our entering class next year will be in the neighborhood of 2 students, which should give you some idea of the odds. What these figures do not convey is the exceptionally high quality of our applicants. In the vast majority of our decisions, we felt that we were choosing among degrees of excellence rather than discriminating between the worthy and the unworthy. It is distressing

to us all that we were able to take so few out of this tremendously well-qualified pool of applicants."

It's good to have a rejection that makes me giggle instead of cry.

That's what I'm assuming. I keep expecting a letter to make it official, but it still hasn't come...

I'm just waiting. And waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

Me too... waiting and waiting and waiting.

I e-mailed them, but they didn't answer.
