andsoitgoes161 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) Yeah I really don't know why I've thought of antecedent as a guy, it seems like sort of a visceral thing, but obviously it has come through in antecedent's writing. Now I feel weird saying antecedent instead of "he or she" as if antecedent is an "it." I'm sorry. I'm a girl for what it's worth, though I suppose in the amount of timorousness, self-deprecation, and need for validation with which I post that's been pretty evident. Gosh, now this is sounding like an anti-fmeinist rant, and I'm just digging myself a hole. I swear it all comes back to the linguistics project I did and the common signifiers in male versus female speech. (Notice the verve of typical feminine expression in there? Ha.) EDIT: Whoops, you posted before I got this up. Sorry miss Edited February 24, 2012 by andsoitgoes161
antecedent Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 EDIT: Whoops, you posted before I got this up. Sorry miss Hahaha not THAT kind of lady Man we'll have to swap stories once we both get into Austin. I want to know how amazing rhet/comp is and I'll trade you some linguisticy goodness for it!
andsoitgoes161 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) Nothing could make my life more complete. Except maybe that addition of wine. Grr...THE addition of wine. I look like an editing maniac. No more iPhone posts. Edited February 24, 2012 by andsoitgoes161

antecedent Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Huh. For some reason I always thought of you as a guy. Weird! I was fairly certain andsoitgoes was a girl from the get go. Do I sense a research topic in the making? perrykm2 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Perhaps it was my George Orwell avatar that threw you off? You're not actually George Orwell? I feel so deceived. andsoitgoes161 1
poeteer Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I've pretty much been imagining everyone as female except for TripWillis, unless they have a boy's name in their username (like MichaelK). I don't know why?
ComeBackZinc Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 You're already thinking like somebody looking for a dissertation topic, antecedent! There's a precedent for that type of research, too. http://books.google.com/books?id=g1uPfMwM4EAC&lpg=PA127&ots=0OTcnxcBg9&dq=detecting%20gender%20based%20on%20language&lr&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q=detecting%20gender%20based%20on%20language&f=false You're not actually George Orwell? I feel so deceived. I assume everyone looks just like their avatar. Rupert Pumpkin's looks so anxious I just want to throw my arm around his shoulder and tell him things will be alright.
antecedent Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) You're not actually George Orwell? I feel so deceived. Despite my obsession, which borders on fanaticism, I am not, in fact, George Orwell. I know, I know, I misled you all. I apologize. Rupert Pumpkin's looks so anxious I just want to throw my arm around his shoulder and tell him things will be alright. Yeah it's a whole subfield of sociolinguistics! Quite a few of the profs I applied to work with are language and gender folk. And I assume both bdon and cquin look like their avatars, though for some reason I think bespeckled looks like cquin's avatar + a lot of freckles. I'm also pretty certain Timshel carries around a parasol all the time, Grunty is always wearing a bandana over her (I think? Maybe his?) face and I've no idea what lolopixie looks like. HaruNoKaze Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 someone posted a waitlist this morning already... And if all yall get in to UT and I get into UT I would love to show you some of the great things that Texas has to offer. And some of the laughable stuff too. And beer. Beer you can only find in Texas...
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Hey everyone! The waitlist from this morning is mine. I AM SO EXCITED!!!! It was sandwiched between my dual rejections from Princeton and Rutgers, and this single waitlist has been my only thread of hope throughout this whole application process. Last night I was drinking away my sorrows and trolling for jobs on craigslist, BUT TODAY I AM FULL OF WIN!!!! My field is gender and sexuality with focuses in pop culture and post colonial, if anyone's interested. I forgot to mention that on the results board, sorry!
HaruNoKaze Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Thunderpaws, please bring that cat to Texas. That is all. And congrats
antecedent Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Thunderpaws, please bring that cat to Texas. That is all. And congrats CORGI IT'S A CORGI Just another great thing Canada has to offer: My application is still in review...where is hope.feathers.insanity? She (now I'm going to second guess all the genders I had just assumed on the board) was helping me hold onto some fragile threads of optimism...
HaruNoKaze Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I'm holding on too; I have to go to chair a panel this afternoon and I'm dying b/c I know I'll be checking my email from my phone and I hope I don't look rude. Everytime my pocket vibrates, my heart races. holding on for rhet... I also applied to UTs Philosophy doctorate program but they don't send out till about March 1st, and my Berkeley rejection is sadness...

That's so exciting What kind of (general) information does the email have in it, if you don't mind me asking?
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I'm really pulling for both of you!!! You two are so supportive of everyone, and I feel like what goes around comes around, right? Besides, I really want us all to be friends in Texas. Along with my giant cat The email had pretty generic stuff in it. There was no mention about how many people might be on the list, but it did mention that their holistic class vision=no ranks on the waitlist, just like last year I think. The only bad thing about Austin's waitlist is that their visiting weekend's in early April so waitlisters will be super strapped for time if they are offered admission. I asked Dr. Lesser how the department felt about waitlisters making independent visits, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. I'll let you know if I hear anything else though!

I want to you hang out with you and your cat! I am a champion pet snuggler. Yeah, the holistic waitlist also makes me nervous, but really no more nervous than the question of whether or not I will even get waitlisted. This has been my top choice program since day one, so I'm really hoping...! I'm sending all my positive, HaruNoKaze-and-antecedent-accepting vibes to the adcomms this morning You waaaaant us in your program! You neeeeeed us in your program!
marlowe Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 So if the waitlist is not ranked, does that mean it is organized by subfields? So if an Early-Modernist declines the offer, one of the EMists on the waitlist takes their place?
antecedent Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) From what I understand, it's broken down by subfield and then each subfield has a group of waitlisted candidates that are not ranked. So if a ling/lang specialist focusing on diachronic phonology removes themselves from the applicant pool, another historical linguist takes their place, not a contemporary sociolinguist or something like that. I think they want to keep each subfield balanced so they don't end up with 10 people studying definite articles or something. Then again I haven't received any official correspondence in regards to the waitlist, that's just what would make the most sense to me. Which may mean it's totally wrong. Thoughts anyone? antecedent Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Also, 2 waitlists up on the board so far today...aaand I just got an email that wasn't from Texas and my heart literally leaped out of my chest. Aaaaargh!
impending Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 First rejection up. I just want to know! I have been so on edge all day.
