der Träumer Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I didn't wait for an email, but I did just check my AppYourself website and decisions for the 16th are available. Rejected, but I am very please to report that the online Magic 8 Ball is currently 3/3 in predictions! Silver lining!
Clay Made Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Got in! No mention of aid so not sure whether they inform us later or at the time of acceptance. Very happy to be accepted.
understatement700 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Just got an email saying to check my official admissions letter sent by Georgetown Grad School. No mention of merit scholarships in the letter and according to the email yesterday if they were offering, it would have been in the official letter. So looks like no money for me

So looks like no money for me I am in the same boat. Was hoping for a little something to sweeten the deal, but I guess not. It would have been nice if they specifically mentioned not receiving anything rather than just not saying anything about finances.

It would have been nice if they specifically mentioned not receiving anything rather than just not saying anything about finances. Yeah, I read it a couple times just to make sure. I guess they don't want to focus on anything negative. Unless an external fellowship miraculously comes through then I would say MSFS is unlikely for me- not with some money on the table from Fletcher, a loan assistance repayment program at Fletcher (nice to know there's at least SOME support there from your school...), and I'm still in the discovery phase here, but all else equal anyways I'm not sure I'd pick MSFS over Fletcher regardless. Now waiting on all my other schools to see who can't make me a sweet deal. Woo me, I'm wooable!

A friend of mine that recently graduated from Gtown said he heard that many people got better financial aid offers from SAIS than SFS. Here's hoping.

avr2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Dinged. Probably too much math/economics on my transcript.
PrattIAFF Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 can't. stop. checking. Well, it seems that we still have St. Patty's day to summon the luck of the Irish...or at least keep us occupied looking for our keys next week rather than clicking refresh every five minutes (because we don't trust auto-refresh with these matters) Signing off...
grtheman Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Just got an email saying to check my official admissions letter sent by Georgetown Grad School. No mention of merit scholarships in the letter and according to the email yesterday if they were offering, it would have been in the official letter. So looks like no money for me I got the same merit aid-less admissions letter, which is a shame because I was really excited about Georgetown. Minutes after reading it and being disappointed I found out that SAIS offered me a 20K per year fellowship, which makes this decision pretty easy!
Clay Made Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Sucks that Georgetown are being so tough with aid. I would have thought with an admissions class <100, they would be a little more generous. I guess its out for me too.
nouveau.ukiyo Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I also got no aid. SAIS gave me no aid either, so I'm in a tough spot: should I go to grad school or not?
sacdude Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Are they rolling out emails during the weekend too? Has anyone head from the school after Friday 5pm EST last night? Crankiness - I know. But what to do!
Clay Made Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I also got no aid. SAIS gave me no aid either, so I'm in a tough spot: should I go to grad school or not? That sucks. Are you considering waiting on Fletcher and hope they throw something at you? I'm considering doing that.
PrattIAFF Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Are they rolling out emails during the weekend too? Has anyone head from the school after Friday 5pm EST last night? Crankiness - I know. But what to do! Yes the extra waiting, after having expected a decision on the 15th, is no fun. But I seriously doubt we will hear anything this weekend. Just try to enjoy yourself this weekend, or do something productive to take your mind off of it. Personally I'm using the extra time to decide what my options will be when I do have notification (acceptance with/out funding, waitlist, or rejection). It's best to brainstorm about how each scenario will allow you to leverage your position vis-a-vis other offers. It's a good exercise, and it will make the wait seem worth it if you're prepared for every possible scenario. Happy St. Patty's
yo_yo86 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I also got no aid. SAIS gave me no aid either, so I'm in a tough spot: should I go to grad school or not? Did you get any aid from UCSD? Seems like a good fit if you're interested in East Asia/Japan and if they at least gave you an out-of-state tuition waiver, it might be worth it. I am also having trouble figuring things out because while I go in everywhere I applied (very exciting), I got very little aid. I since considered deferring for a year to work (and save more), but when I checked out the deferral policies for some of my top choices, it doesn't seem likely they will allow it just for financial reasons. So...still stuck.
ajl Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Has anyone gotten aid from Georgetown at all? I'm not surprised that I didn't, but it seems like someone on here would have... Fletcher w/$15k/year vs. Georgetown w/$0--decision seems obvious, but in a way it's hard to be an adult about this.

Fletcher w/$15k/year vs. Georgetown w/$0--decision seems obvious, but in a way it's hard to be an adult about this. This is what I was trying to determine because perhaps releasing earlier admissions decisions without aid is a way of weeding out those who cannot afford the pricetag... It's sad to think about it like that, but my decision really does boil down to my bottom line... Affordability is usually high on most people's list.
Clay Made Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I think I'm just going to email them on Monday to determine what the situation is. I havent come across anyone who has received some aid and that's quite bizarre.

I don't think there is much I can do to improve my application; I can't change the past. Edited March 18, 2012 by nouveau.ukiyo
MYRNIST Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 This is what I was trying to determine because perhaps releasing earlier admissions decisions without aid is a way of weeding out those who cannot afford the pricetag. For selfish reasons I hope this is true, since I still haven't heard from them and maybe it means I'm getting some aid. Not holding my breath, though - Georgetown doesn't have the reputation of being particularly generous with their aid.
nouveau.ukiyo Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 That sucks. Are you considering waiting on Fletcher and hope they throw something at you? I'm considering doing that. Do schools offer money to students taken off the waiting list? Learn619 1
MYRNIST Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 (edited) Do schools offer money to students taken off the waiting list? I vaguely remember from last admissions cycle results that some people actually did get fin-aid off the waiting list at several different universities. Pretty hard to predict, though. On the one hand, being waitlisted is a clear indication you are not one of their top choices, which implies you're not going to get merit fellowships. On the other hand, if their yield (% of admits who actually choose to attend) is too low and they need bodies to hit their target class size, they may sweeten the pot to those on the waitlist. Unfortunately you probably just have to wait and see. Edited March 18, 2012 by MYRNIST
Clay Made Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Do schools offer money to students taken off the waiting list? Well Fletcher seems to do so. Every year they have admitted someone from their waitlist, they apparently provide some funding to those admits. I'm hoping I'm one of them.
