vPersie Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I've never checked my spam folder so frequently, ever. In fact besides looking for Fulbright notifications I hadn't check it in over 6 months for sure. haha I broke down and emailed the embassy that is making final decisions for my competition, asking for any news or an estimate of when we might hear.
Jay5 Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) ah thanks ha, wooops, yes, i meant forum. sorry for the confusion! Edited February 27, 2013 by Jay5
Jay5 Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I can't stop refreshing my email on my phone...I'm tormenting myself!!!!! lol sending positive vibes out there to everyone...hang in there!!! Lol. I can't stop either! Then I get paranoid if I delete emails from my phone, thinking I might have missed it and deleted it thinking it was just another random email. sending positive energy right back!
lunita Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Thanks Man.. they really do seem to be running ahead of schedule. Switzerland made there announcements towards the end of April last year! Yes, I saw that. The Swiss review council added me to their Swiss Knowledge Network, and now I get 2-3 different newsletters each month. I must admit, I've been a bit superstitious about the whole thing, so I was nervous to speak up as a Swiss candidate in this forum when I didn't see any others. I did fill out the spreadsheet. I'm really nervous! Anyone else find nervousness manifesting as superstitiousness? Books2readme 1
maz Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Does anyone know if Fulbright students are required to return to the US immediately after finishing their programs? Is it frowned upon to get an internship or short term project work in the host country before going back?

Is it frowned upon to get an internship or short term project work in the host country before going back? From the blogs I've read, there have definitely been Fulbrighters who stayed for an extra six months or year in their host country after their fulbright year doing their own thing. Fulbright probably will not continue to cover your living arrangements and you will probably lose out on your expensed ticket back to the US.

Hanuta Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Did those of you who applied for a full grant to Germany also apply for the DAAD study scholarship?
medizumbacist Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 my advisor is trying to get me to apply for one of those...if I don't get a Fulbright I'll probably apply for one next year
bastana Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 ME TOO! You should post to the spreadsheet! Haha I must admit I hope we both get it or ... it's too mean to even write! Gaaa! I hope we both get it, period. *must be nice, must be nice - not competitive, no vodoo - must be nice, must be nice* Well, you don't know if we applied to the same sort of Fulbright. Insha'allah the best for everyone which spreadsheet? Best Wishes.
kumar1244 Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Did those of you who applied for a full grant to Germany also apply for the DAAD study scholarship? I applied to both the Fulbright and the DAAD study scholarship. But it seems that's a one off....you apply and then 5 months later you get a yes or no. Or at least I haven't heard a thing...have you?

Apparently, DAAD has a very good reputation in Germany and so would a good alternative to the Fulbright. (Of course, we're all going to get it though! o_O) Yeah, I haven't heard anything after they confirmed they had all of my materials. Last year the applicants received the final decision march 2nd! Not sure if that's the general trend or last year was a fluke year and they were super early... Either way the long wait for both is excruciating.

The DAAD is a wonderful insitutiton; I got a scholarship from them to study abroad during undergrad. Definitely a worthy alternative to the Fulbright.

Definitely a worthy alternative to the Fulbright. What exactly is the DAAD study scholarship.. could it be used in conjunction with the funds received from Fulbright, or is it just something else entirely? Which leads to another question I have been mulling over: In the Fulbright application, it asked if we were applying for any other scholarships. Would it be frowned upon to apply for another scholarship after the fact? As in, additional funds for additional traveling or what have you while overseas with a Fulbright? I don't even know if there are any scholarships/grants that do that, are there?
TJScandals Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Hello everyone! I've been lurking on the forums for a while and decided to join the discussion. I was selected as an alternate ETA for Indonesia 2013-2014 and am wondering if anyone has any info on being an alternate. IIE wouldn't tell me how many alternates there are or where I am on the list (which is very frustrating). Does anyone have any helpful insight? Thanks and congrats to all the new Fulbrighters!

IIE wouldn't tell me how many alternates there are or where I am on the list (which is very frustrating). Does anyone have any helpful insight? Thanks and congrats to all the new Fulbrighters! I was an alternate last year to the Netherlands. I would say if they have 1.5-2 times the amount of people recommended as finalist. Then some will get rejected and some get alternate status. For my country there was 16 grants offered, but only 13 actually given due to decreasing funding. I think I was 1 out of 3 or 4 alternates. If someone drops out between now and even into September or October you could be bumped up to a full grant. It was painful since I found out in April and then had to just wait and see, never knowing. If I were you, I just create a list of what you would need to do to get ready. Then wait until you actually hear.
TJScandals Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) Thanks, ill do that. If I don't hear by June I'm going to withdraw. I have grad school and ROTC to deal with as well. I think it's silly that they won't tell alternates where they are on the list.... Edited February 27, 2013 by TJScandals

The DAAD scholarship is administered by the German Academic Exchange Service and funds similar/identical projects to the Fulbright (I think 6-12 month research trips for post-graduate or dissertation work). Because they're both funded from a common source, you actually can't hold both fellowships simultaneously (I asked!). However, depending on funding sources, you can be receiving multiple grants during the same period. For example, it is possible to receive the Whitaker (for biomedical engineering) and the Fulbright at the same time. About traveling- my commission doesn't want me to leave Europe for more than 14 days during the year so a travel fellowship wouldn't really be practical. there'sanappforthat 1

I hope to make lots of small trips around Germany/Europe, over weekends and such, if I get accepted. I was wondering if it is acceptable to find additional funding for those types of things. Or if there are even grants/scholarships available for that kind of thing.

I was thinking if the visa process goes smoothly, I could get a six-week or more internship in Europe prior to Fulbright, or take a longer internship if it doesn't work out. I just really want to resign from my job soon, and I'm trying to figure out how to close the gap. Has anyone heard of, or worked with AIESEC before?

I had never even heard of AISEC before now; just did some internet research. Is it a legit organization? It almost seems too good to be true, like somehow there's a pyramid scheme wrapped up into it or something...
Ruluo Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 If anyone cares, I hopped on the bandwagon and called IIE about making sure my transcript is in, and I was told it's not a problem. They can't confirm it now, but if they haven't received it they'll just send a follow up e-mail--no automatic disqualification as the January e-mail suggests...heh... faithfullywaiting 1
amirah Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Well, you don't know if we applied to the same sort of Fulbright. Insha'allah the best for everyone which spreadsheet? Best Wishes. That's true! I am an information person (read: internet & society) and I applied for a full grant & CLEA to look at refugee information systems. How about you? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmoTe-gJd4B9dFJ0aW1mYTVkYnhKcUEzR28yRTNwdlE&pli=1#gid=1
amirah Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Which leads to another question I have been mulling over: In the Fulbright application, it asked if we were applying for any other scholarships. Would it be frowned upon to apply for another scholarship after the fact? As in, additional funds for additional traveling or what have you while overseas with a Fulbright? I don't even know if there are any scholarships/grants that do that, are there? I knew I remembered reading about additional funding, http://us.fulbrightonline.org/award-benefits Or, to cut to the chase: "Other Funds If awarded a Fulbright grant, a candidate is required to report all funds received from other sources. Non-duplicative funds are permitted, but scholarships, fellowships or grants in dollars or foreign currencies received concurrently with a Fulbright grant that duplicate Fulbright benefits will be deducted. Fulbrighters may not accept remunerative work abroad during the grant period without prior approval of the supervising agency in the host country and/or IIE." So you want to be cautious about getting more funding, it may turn out to be not really more money, if you get my drift. About taking extra time: probably your FPA could answer that best but I have received federal grant money for travel before and I had to make my flight arrangements within a few weeks of my program start/end dates and always on a US carrier. There was very little wiggle room. So for three summers I would fly back to the States for 24 hours then get on another flight out. Financially it actually worked well since I needed to be in another country anyway. So if this is something you actually want/need to plan now I would hedge on the side of not being able to spend more than a week over if you plan on taking the subsidised flight. But I am also just guessing from past experiences. there'sanappforthat 1
