Kuriakos Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I was asking about Chicago. He didn't seem certain about the information even as he offered it, so I'm glad to hear he was mistaken. It seemed highly improbable to me.
rav989 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 could he possibly have meant they don't guarantee 5 years of *fellowship* funding? as far as I understand very few schools (Stanford, Princeton, maybe Chicago) guarantee that whereas most others (Harvard, Yale, maybe Duke) guarantee 5 years of funding but some of that funding is contingent on teaching.
Lux Lex Pax Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Emory also offers full funding for fives years that isn't contingent on teaching.
DivSkool Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Don't let money keep you from applying! You are guaranteed tuition plus stipend for five years at Chicago Div, hands down, at minimum. From the web site (http://divinity.uchicago.edu/admissions/financing.shtml): All PhD students admitted to the Divinity School in every area of doctoral study receive a 5-year University of Chicago Fellowship, which provides full tuition, a $22,000 stipend, two summer research stipends of $3000 each, and coverage in the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) for the student.

If you have a family, they offer full health coverage (no monthly payments, no co-pays, nothing) for every member of your family at no cost to the student. Yale expects you to teach, because they want to train you to become a professor, but you don't get a stipend in exchange for teaching. ûl ʾašerātō and Kuriakos 2

Ummm, who do I have to bribe to get in on that? (j/k of course)

EcoBren Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Does anybody know, at least roughly, when interviews fall? For schools such as Duke and Yale? I of course have every possible family obligation one can think of in January and February and I was just curious if anybody has more info. Fingers crossed I'm actually chosen for said interviews!

I heard unofficially that Duke will give interview notifications mid-January with actual interviews in early February.
sogdia Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Hi all: I'm happy to share any news I receive on interview/admissions decisions with you all over the coming months. Broadly speaking, my research interests involve the reception and history of interpretation of both Jewish and Christian Scriptures. Scholars such as Markus Bockmuehl, Christopher Rowland, and Margaret Mitchell have sparked my interest in Gadamer and his concept of Wirkungsgeshichte as a supplement to the traditional historical-critical method and a means of connecting and illuminating other areas of study such as textual criticism, narrative criticism, and biblical theology. I am also intrigued by recent insights in the areas of orality and textuality and how these might bear on the traditioning process. Most specifically, I'd say I am particularly interested in early Christian reception of biblical texts with an eye to patristic theological development and hermeneutics. I'm applying to UVa, Duke, Marquette, and Wheaton. I'm curious what will happen: on the one hand, I have the baggage of coming from a conservative seminary, but on the other, I have good GRE scores and have an article being published in Novum Testamentum next spring. We'll see!!

IIRC Yale only started doing interviews last year and did them via skype
Sparky Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Check the results search for last year's results from the programs? (Or...don't, because that is not a rabbit hole you want to go down). Notre Dame usually does late January notifications for late February interviews. IIRC, that has tended to be on the later side. My impression has been that most humanities depts who do interviews hold them sometime in Feb.
Kuriakos Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Did anyone else notice that the UChicago application asks if you have kids? This worries me as I was cautioned not to mention that I have an infant in interviews and such. I don't really understand why you'd ask that except to discriminate against people. Thoughts?
Kuriakos Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 IIRC Yale only started doing interviews last year and did them via skype Yep. Someone posted this link in another thread: http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2012/01/11/grad-school-divided-over-interviews/
NTstudent Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Okay, so I've applied to UVa and Emory. Anyone else? Kuriakos, When I applied to UChicago last year they asked a lot more financial information than any other school, and I applied to only top-tier programs. I wish I could tell you what to say, but the bottom line is that you can't lie on the application. I know of a guy in the program with a young child, but that's probably not all that helpful. I think you would be fine sending an e-mail to the dean, or anyone you might know on the inside to find out more information about why they ask. BTW, where are you now?

Kuriakos Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 There hasn't been much activity on Grad Cafe this application season. I'm going to go ahead and assume that there has been a sudden drop in prospective students and that we are all going to get acceptances, full funding, and generous stipends. boywholived, 11Q13, sogdia and 2 others 5
rav989 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 All submitted... let the waiting begin! hope Kuriakos is right Kuriakos and rav989 1 1
Kuriakos Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 All applications have been submitted for me, too. Hurry up February.
EcoBren Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Finished yesterday! Also, if anyone is interested I found out the interview weekend for Duke has been scheduled for Feb. 8-10. Good luck everyone!
EcoBren Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Have the Duke invites gone out already? Nope, I just gave up trying to guess and asked!
