electric Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 (edited) Got the "wait list" email, too. I applied to civil engineering. I'm currently finishing an MS and starting a PhD next academic year. I'm going completely nuts with all the lingering uncertainty in my fellowship and phd applications! Edited April 3, 2013 by electric
emilycrusher22 Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) got the waitlist email for biological sciences - I know someone else that applied and was rejected in the same category. we're both 2nd year grad students  fingers crossed! Edited April 4, 2013 by emilycrusher22
InquilineKea Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) if we look at previous years (Â http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=ndseg&t=a&o=&p=3Â ) it definitely seems like acceptances are over-represented on the list (certainly more than 10% of people who post are accepted). as for how this would scale to this year, I have no idea.. Â Maybe acceptances are also more likely to be posted than rejections. I'm certainly more inclined to do that myself.. Edited April 4, 2013 by InquilineKea
srtg9 Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I'm in mechanical engineering, currently attending grad school, and i got the "waitlist" email
FrankForum Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Well, obviously, if any of us shortlisted people hear good or bad, please post it!
cp13 Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 i'm in chemistry, going to grad school in the fall, and got the waitlist email.
QuantumGypsy Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I'm in Materials Science, got the waitlist email, and I'm currently attending grad school
Cal_justin Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I'm in Chemistry - also got the waitlist email and I am a 2nd year grad student. I really hope the DOD does make the final decision because my project is related to sensing explosives hungry 1
daisusaikoro Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) I won the NSF award, but I got the letter saying I'm wait listed for the NDSEG.  People may say it doesn't matter, but I'm very curious to see what happens with this award.  Thankfully, I'm also in the running of the Fulbright. It's been a good year this year.  Cognitive, behavioral, and neural sciences, btw. Edited April 5, 2013 by daisusaikoro
synorg Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 I won the NSF award, but I got the letter saying I'm wait listed for the NDSEG. People may say it doesn't matter, but I'm very curious to see what happens with this award. Thankfully, I'm also in the running of the Fulbright. It's been a good year this year. i won the nsf too but getting the ndseg would be way better financially for my PI, so i'm hoping to hear good news in the next couple weeks.
NH603 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Biosciences. Â Also got the ambiguous "still being considered" email. Â No other word yet. Â Â
InquilineKea Posted April 5, 2013 Author Posted April 5, 2013 (edited) Ok, so if someone is forced to transfer from one school to another school while on NDSEG, will NDSEG almost always approve the request? Or is there a significant chance that it could be denied? Â What about from one adviser to another adviser? Edited April 5, 2013 by InquilineKea
rebok2k2 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Any chemical engineering applicants who got accepted?
nnnnnnn Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I know a chem grad student who got it. If that helps. (She also got NSF so not sure what she's choosing.)
Eckingsan Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I was feeling good about this email until I came here Received it April 3...Biosciences, 1st yr phd student.. Â Good luck
SlickMcFavorite Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 (edited) Has anyone actually heard back about a final decision re NDSEG Edited April 8, 2013 by SlickMcFavorite
hungry Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Electrical Engineering... still waiting. Â Has anyone who got a wait-list email last week received a final decision yet?
emilycrusher22 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 no word yet (still 'being considered') in biosciences. in 2007 they released a second set of awards one week later  (people have 1 week to decide if they're accepting the award or not). If we DON'T hear tonight/tomorrow, then I think it's more likely that we are NOT wait listed and instead they're waiting for a DoD department to decide.  anyone want to speculate with me on this? or has anyone called and gotten any info relating to this?
InquilineKea Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 If I go on medical leave, then is it possible to defer the fellowship for a year? Â Or in other words, what are the chances that they'll accept medical leave as an extenuating circumstance, even if medical leave is a result of psychological circumstances?
synorg Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 rather than spam each fellowship thread with the same question, why don't you contact all of the award-granting institutions (ASEE, NSF, DOE, etc.)? Cookie and Anslyn&Dougherty 2
quags367 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 For those who received the nebulous email, what happens when you log in and go here: https://ndseg.asee.org/award/2013/overview ?I see a message about declining the award, which is certainly not true. Good luck, everybody!
DocLex Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I think it is a bug. I saw that I had "declined the award" but then logged out and tried logging in again and was unable to.
Guest1009 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Got that too. I e-mailed them to make sure it wasn't legit and their response was:  "XXXX, If you have not been formally offered an award by our team via e-mail then your application is still under consideration by the department of Defense. Applicants logging into the award portal who have not been awarded will not see accurate information associated with their account because they have not received an award offer. Please be advised that your application is still being considered for an award by the Department of Defense who is working hard to issue awards at this time. As they make their decision of who they would like to award, the will inform our office. At this time, we are still awaiting their decision regarding your application."  Good luck everyone!  synorg 1
QuantumGypsy Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Any rejections from the "still being considered" pool?
cp13 Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I had received a still being considered email and then was emailed again today and received the award. Best of luck to the rest of the applicants! I am in chemistry and an incoming student if that is of interest to people hungry 1
