ENMC Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Hi usercat, I tried starting a thread about this a few days ago... I can´t wait to start hearing back from schools. I applied to USC, Evans, Harrris for Public Policy and then NYU and UCLA for Sociology. I´m concerned about low GRE scores and my writing sample - most of my writing is in Spanish so they´re not reading my best work! I´m very hopeful... It takes just one acceptance! Best of luck! E
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I am following ENMC over from his/her thread. Waiting on U of Minn Humphrey (12/01/14), U of Wash Evans (1/15/15), and ASU Public Affairs (1/15/15). I received a personal email from an ASU academic specialist that my application was complete when all my references posted. Other than that, silence. I was looking at previous years on GradCafe and applicants reported hearing from Humphrey in early February for the past couple years. Talking with professors, it looks like we should hear by early March from schools because of funding allocations and internal university deadlines.
thedoctorphd Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Just wanted to introduce myself... I applied to a combination of political science and joint policy/poli sci programs. With regard to joint programs/policy programs, I have heard from Minnesota's Humphrey school via phone call from admissions director and POI. In addition, I have heard from Duke's Sanford school. With Duke, they wanted me to do their MPP program and then reapply to their PhD program. Best of luck to all!
usercat Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Yeah, looking at the past results boards, it seems like most programs notify in March, so maybe we'll get more of a conversation going once decisions start coming in. UT-Austin (LBJ) had some admits in late January in past years -- I wonder if they're on a similar timeline for this year. Any other LBJ PhD applicants lurking on this thread? WhatAmIDoingNow 1

No one has really posted results from those schools. Edited January 29, 2015 by WhatAmIDoingNow
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 (edited) I just got a call from at the Humphrey School and am admitted! I am so excited, my top choice Edited January 30, 2015 by WhatAmIDoingNow RCtheSS 1
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Anyone want to revive this conversation for fall 2015 public policy Ph.D. applications? I can start. I applied to LBJ, Evans, and Ford. Anyone else? Has anyone heard anything yet? Evans just sent me an email that they are reviewing my application and will email the decision between February and mid-March. Although it is nice to have some information on whether or not they have my application.
thedoctorphd Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I just got a call from at the Humphrey School and am admitted! I am so excited, my top choice Congrats! What is your area of interest? Maybe we will meet at Humphrey!
ENMC Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I just got a call from at the Humphrey School and am admitted! I am so excited, my top choice Congratulations!! That's wonderful news! I got the message from UW Evans about them starting to review applications. Also got a message from Chicago Harris asking whether I would consider a research focused MPP if I'm not accepted into the PhD program. WhatAmIDoingNow 1
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 (edited) Congrats! What is your area of interest? Maybe we will meet at Humphrey! I am interested in policy implementation in and across public and nonprofit institutions. There are not many programs that actually have projects around this area, Humphrey is has specialists in the exact area of research. I am still waiting to see about Evans, but will most likely be at Humphrey come fall. :-) Humphrey also has an international management conference that students can attend this summer, sounds interesting. WhatAmIDoingNow Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Got my ASU admission on Saturday. It was a generic and automated email to check my ASU account for the official letter, which was automated with no additional information. I will be calling mid week on this. ASU is my safety school. It has great faculty and the school, college, and university are really investing in the ASU School of Public Administration becoming a top PA school. Already has decent rankings. Students also have access to electives almost anywhere in the university, the biggest university in the US. There is also a lot of collaboration with faculty across schools and colleges, which it important to me. Some fantastic opportunities to beef up my quantitative methods and analysis. ENMC, that is still good news, even if it isn't the absolute answer you want. I have been watching the results page and all those applicants that get flat rejections...yikes. I got the same Evans message. It is nice to hear from them, that they are actually looking at the applications. Anyone else hearing anything?
ENMC Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 It’s been really quiet here! Any more news and acceptances? WhatAmIDoingNow 1
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 The results page hasn't been showing much for Public Policy/Admin/Affairs acceptances and rejections. I did get an email back from Evans responding to my question and they report trying to get decisions out sooner than last year. It looks like the decisions last year went out mid to late March. I am still waiting to get my funding letters from UMN and ASU. I have been in communication with my assigned advisers, the letters are being prepared or in the mail. I am impatient and just want all the information so I can make a decision and start working on the transition to wherever I attend. Has anyone gotten funding information or started weighing their options?

Has anyone gotten funding information or started weighing their options? I have definitely started weighing my options. I still haven't received the funding amounts from most of the programs, so like you, I am waiting on that. In addition, I still haven't heard from a few programs. As of right now, I am leaning towards the Humphrey school. I think for me it comes down to two questions, "What do I really want to do?" and "Where do I see myself is ten years?" I want to be a scholar-practitioner and have the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge to be in academia or the public/private sector. Also, Humphrey would provide me with amazing advisors - who have been in contact with me and are absolutely honest and welcoming.
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I am impressed with all three programs for different reasons, but UMN fits the best with what I want to do. I just need to know the financials. I have known other PhD students at various programs who received funding that didn't fully cover living expenses for the location. Seattle and Minneapolis have a higher cost of living than Phoenix.
ENMC Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Hi everyone, I saw on the results board that someone was accepted at the University of Southern California. How did they notify you? Anyone else hear from them? That's my top school so I'm on freak-out mode.
zworld707 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hi ENMC, I was the one who posted the USC admission. I got an email notification on Valentine's day morning directing me to a website. I logged on, and there was an acceptance letter with a full 5-yr funding! I am not sure if this is the only way they contact you.... but I am living abroad at the moment, so that might be the reason they didn't give me any call. I haven't seen any USC reject posts, so the school may not be completely done. Good luck to you! WhatAmIDoingNow 1
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I saw a mass of rejections from Duke (about 8 on the same day) on the results board last week. That was painful to watch. Good luck to all of you on the rest of your applications.
ENMC Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 @zworld707 Thanks for the heads up! I didn't get in, sadly. There was no email. I just checked USC connect and there was my letter. Still keeping my hopes up for a couple schools but I'll likely have to do this again next year, with better GRE scores, I hope! Best to all!!
flyhigh0812 Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Did anyone get a scholarship offer from ASU? I just received the first year RAship and I am wondering whether someone else got the four-year or five-year scholarship or the school only assures the first year scholarship at the beginning. Thanks for sharing the information in advance!
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 ASU gave me a stipend guaranteed for the first academic year, where renewal is contingent upon resources and satisfactory progress. No guaranteed summer funding, but there are opportunities to assist faculty and TA. Full tuition remission and health insurance as long as I am registered for 6 credits per term (fees not included). I plan to contact current PhD students to see how that has worked for them. RCtheSS and Cookie 1 1
Iul Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 Hi! My status for Humphrey has just changed to Final Review. Any thoughts on this?
WhatAmIDoingNow Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) Hi! My status for Humphrey has just changed to Final Review. Any thoughts on this? Mine finally switched too and I received an acceptance a few weeks ago. In speaking with Humphrey, they only referenced another applicant being accepted and I assumed they were referring to policyphdhopeful. I am sure they have more than two spots, being they admitted 6 or 7 last year. But they are planning a visit day soon. Right now I assume it is probably just a delayed Graduate office protocol. I have the visit day info. However, I had to ask about it since I had to schedule my travel to visit the poli sci department at UMN and Wisconsin in the same week. Have you been in contact with Katherine Murphy, the graduate secretary?
zworld707 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Is anyone else still waiting to hear back from schools? This forum is awfully quiet...Am I the only one still not done? Ph.D. threads in other fields of study are about to explode with people.... what's wrong with ours.. I saw one post saying that the Harvard Kennedy admission letter is now available on the application website. I checked on mine, and no letter pops up. For those of you HSK applicants out there: do you all see your decision letters? Or is it that only the admitted ones can see their letters at this point? Also, from which other schools are you all waiting to hear?
