ion_exchanger Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Has anyone ever had an interview with a professor and more than one applicant? They are officially my new favorite types of interview. I had one with two people, and it was literally just a research presentation, and one with three people, where we were each asked about our research briefly and then given a chalk talk. These interviews are fun, but they get pretty tiring after a bit. biotechie 1
química Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Those of you going to UIC-GEMS interview...what are you wearing? I applied to mostly chemistry programs-none of which required a interview-so, this is my only interview, and I'm at an impasse. My significant other insists I wear a suit, but he has no experience with graduate school as he is in medical school...ie. I feel like he can't be trusted!!! anyway, some feedback would be greatly appreciated!! sanks!

I'm not interviewing there and I'm all done with my season, but I wore grey slacks, a cute (not low cut) blouse, and a 3/4 sleeve black blazer jacket with black boots. That way you're dressed very professionally, but you can be a lot more comfortable than you would be in a suit. I didn't even need to have my jacket buttoned. Some girls wore knee-length dresses, but I think they are too much hassle when you are more focused on selling yourself. ion_exchanger 1

Winteriscoming Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) I have a dilemma now... I hope you can give me some piece of advice. I interviewed at my (now) #1 choice program per skype in early january. I enjoyed both interviews and the POI I talked to told me that he had recommended me to the ad com after our interview and that he thought I had a fair chance of getting accepted. Nevertheless the acceptance rate after interviews is around 30%, so it's hard for me to be overly optimistic. The program director told me I would probably know about admission decision after the interview weekends, in late February - beginning of March but insisted I should stay put (don't know if this is just a formality or if it shows interest). Nevertheless, someone posted on Friday that they had been accepted after the first interview round. In the meantime I have been accepted at my #4 choice. I'm pretty excited about the location, but not so much about the project, the POI and the feasibility in terms of stipend. The thing is, my POI told me I should let him now about my decision ASAP and that I had until end of february to decide. I'm waiting now for the decision at #1 choice, but I'm afraid decision will arrive too late and that I will have already made a decision about #4. The second interview weekend is March 1, so decision would probably arrive by March 8. I don't know if I should be straightforward, tell them the situation and ask if I'm still in the game or if I should just wait and wish for the best timing? Any thoughts? P.S: My #2 and #3 choices will need at least 3 or 4 months to make any decision but I'm definitely not betting on getting accepted, so I'm nowhere near of declining an offer without carefully thinking about it. It's already my 2nd time applying and I'm ready for the change! Edited February 10, 2013 by Winteriscoming

I would probably let them know that you are very excited about their program, but that you have other interviews scheduled and you would like to have them completed before you make your final decision. You can definitely mention that their school is your top choice if it really is. Most of the time they will understand. When the schools contacted me about admission, they stated in the e-mail that they understood that I would have additional interviews and that they didn't expect a decision before they are completed. They did ask when they could expect a decision, but I think that is an acceptable question for them to ask; it determines how many students they can accept from later interviews. Biohopeful Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) Uh oh... I hope everyone's safe! Congrats to everyone who's been accepted so far! The applicant who got an interview at Purdue is an international student. Since it's so late in the game, I'm not holding my breath at this point. I'm assuming unofficial waitlist or something to that degree. Edited February 11, 2013 by Biohopeful
NeuroTU Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 In the next 3 days I hear from one program and interview at another. STRESS. AND MARDI GRAS! Sorry for usm and prayers are with all yall

I would guess unofficial waitlist too, since they apparently sent out rejections. Just weird that we haven't heard any acceptances yet.
Biohopeful Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Sometimes, but sometimes I think they're the last ones (due to funding and whatnot). Purdue doesn't have much information in general about their Biology program on here in the results search, but I would've thought I'd hear something by now. I got a cryptic email from a school I interviewed with asking me to rank my top 3 faculty interests in order. I'm not sure if I could interpret this as an acceptance or what. I was expecting something along the lines of accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. And this email is so soon, so I wonder if they sent it to everyone.

Seems more likely to be a prelude to an interview, so they can build you a customized interview itinerary. That said, it's unusual for it not to be explicit.
Biohopeful Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I interviewed with the school last weekend. It seems like such a quick response for an interest.
epsilon Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 (edited) I interviewed with the school last weekend. I got an acceptance just 3 days after the interview, some schools let you know much quicker than others.. Edited February 12, 2013 by epsilon

I got an acceptance just 3 days after the interview, some schools let you know much quicker than others.. Both of my acceptances came within two days of my interview weekend. The first I got back on a Monday night and knew my Wednesday, and the second I got back on Tuesday night and knew by Thursday. Take is as a positive thing if you hear quickly.
Gram Neutral Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Just got a call from Medical College of Wisconsin. Turns out they wanted to know if I wanted to accept my interview or not. Their invite had gotten sent to my spam folder I was like, uh what email?! But I worked it out and it's all good. Woo hoo.
Biohopeful Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Awesome! I interviewed there a couple years ago. I can tell you want my interviews were like. I was waitlisted, and didn't get in, but I think that all worked out for the best.
mengyan528 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I noticed in some posts some of you know the acceptance rate after interview. How did you know this? Told during the interview?
bassish101 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Sometimes the graduate students will have an idea about post-interview acceptance rates. Otherwise, the forums (past and current years) occasionally have estimates.
bamafan Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I noticed in some posts some of you know the acceptance rate after interview. How did you know this? Told during the interview? It's generally 50-90%, but lately, it's been lower due to funding cuts. But you can usually figure either from the faculty saying what it is or by looking at the previous years' admits/matriculation rate and how many people are interviewing with you.
MicroB2012 Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 Just got a call from a professor that I had interview with, and informed that I am accepted by Duke MGM program. Good luck to all you guys! ion_exchanger, mop and w8inggame 3
