DontHate Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 What are some people's thoughts on the program? Conscia Fati and Gwendolyn 1 1
sebastiansteddy Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I thought you were only applying to top 20 programs? US News has it ranked #22... asleepawake, DontHate, Gwendolyn and 3 others 5 1
DontHate Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) Actually, no one ever asked me my reason for applying to any of the schools I chose. People just assume things, don't they, Snarkystsnarkypants? I don't refer to the US News rankings at all. In fact, I doubt they even exist for my field. What I call a "top program" is a program considered strong by people in the field, like professors and hiring committees. CUNY has a very strong comparative literature department, in the top 15, and also Gregory Rabassa, who's basically translated every important contemporary Latin American writer. Also it's in NYC, where most of my family and friends are. I'm wondering what other people know about it? Edited December 9, 2012 by caw_caw_caw
TripWillis Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 It's amazing, and only getting better. But I'm biased. Don't be surprised to see it ascend to the top 15 within the next five years... Two Espressos 1
TripWillis Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Also, they dramatically upped their fellowships and decreased their teaching load for FL13 students. wreckofthehope 1
asleepawake Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Also, they dramatically upped their fellowships and decreased their teaching load for FL13 students. Blah! This was the main reason I'm not applying--funding, or lack thereof. I would consider changing my mind, but it looks like I don't have time since they want hard copies of everything.
TripWillis Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 What's an FL13 student? Fall '13 entering students. And the new fellowship is $25,000/yr, 1/1 teaching years 2-4
wreckofthehope Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Fall '13 entering students. And the new fellowship is $25,000/yr, 1/1 teaching years 2-4 Wow - that's brilliant. Is that still only for a portion of students, or did they up the numbers receiving fellowships too?
TripWillis Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Wow - that's brilliant. Is that still only for a portion of students, or did they up the numbers receiving fellowships too? Everyone will be funded going forth. wreckofthehope 1
Two Espressos Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Fall '13 entering students. And the new fellowship is $25,000/yr, 1/1 teaching years 2-4 That's an excellent funding package, wow.
wreckofthehope Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) Everyone will be funded going forth. Sad this didn't happen a few years ago! As an international student, I just couldn't apply to CUNY knowing the instability of the funding and the reliance of their students on picking up extra teaching to get through (you're only allowed to work 20 hrs a week on a visa, which I thought could prove untenable). It was already a hugely attractive program, now it can only get even better! Edited December 9, 2012 by wreckofthehope
JeremiahParadise Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Also, they dramatically upped their fellowships and decreased their teaching load for FL13 students. This is GREAT news -- thanks for sharing, Trip. I've always loved (everything I've heard about) the CUNY program, but the average funding/teaching/time to degree was always an issue. Really glad to hear it -- and really excited to submit my application this week. Thanks again.
practical cat Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Fall '13 entering students. And the new fellowship is $25,000/yr, 1/1 teaching years 2-4 That is amazing news. Fingers crossed extra hard for everyone applying there this year. (And now I'm kind of wishing I were too?)
DontHate Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 Their deadline isn't until Feb 1, so if you want to apply you have almost 2 months to do it.
dazedandbemused Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Wow, I wish I had known about those changes at CUNY. But considering that I already have eight apps due on the 15th, there's just no way I'd be able to pull it off.
asleepawake Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Their deadline isn't until Feb 1, so if you want to apply you have almost 2 months to do it. Isn't it December 15th?
JeremiahParadise Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Isn't it December 15th? Correct. Not sure what the person above is referring to.
sebastiansteddy Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Correct. Not sure what the person above is referring to. Comp Lit is due Feb. 1st
NowMoreSerious Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Fall '13 entering students. And the new fellowship is $25,000/yr, 1/1 teaching years 2-4 Dammit, this was a top choice for me and I was talked out of applying specifically because I was told their funding lacked.
asleepawake Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Dammit, this was a top choice for me and I was talked out of applying specifically because I was told their funding lacked. Someone in the other thread said they had their transcripts and GRE scores mailed directly and it was all received (last year). I wonder if it's worth trying to do this last-minute tomorrow...
TripWillis Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 I would go for it if you guys think you can swing it. It's pretty awesome here.
ish388 Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 http://www.gc.cuny.edu/Prospective-Current-Students/Prospective-Students/Application-Deadlines-Requirements According to this it's due Feb 1... Where is the December 15 deadline coming from?
