cali_monkey Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Hi all, I applied to 10 programs. I've only heard from two, both acceptances. The one I'm most excited about is Mich-Ann Arbor. If you haven't heard yet, I wouldn't worry. I just started hearing back this last week and from what i understand, we've got a few weeks to more than a month before many of the programs start getting back to us. Also, in both cases I was emailed/called personally as notification. Different people are assigned to do this (my most likely advisor in one case) and so just because one faculty member has gotten a hold of someone doesn't mean that another just hasn't gotten around to it yet. Still, of course I'm on constant watch to hear from the others. Good luck all!
MediaAmbition Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Big Congrats on Michigan. One of my top choices so I fear it will not go my way. May I ask how you were notified? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to disclose details.
MediaAmbition Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Oh, you mentioned you were contacted personally. Maybe any other details...
cali_monkey Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Yeah just PM'd you the specifics. Good luck!

I've applied to U Mich - Ann Arbor as well, and when I spoke with them in December they mentioned that they expected final decisions to go out at the end of January. I was starting to panic seeing as it's now February! If you wouldn't mind sharing any specifics with me, too, I'd REALLY appreciate it!
S2S2S2S2S2 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Noticed that folks applied to Northwestern? Which area? Rhetoric and Public Culture, Performance Studies, or Media and Technology Studies? I know that folks have already been invited for paid visit/interview weekend, myself included. Nonetheless, wishing you all the best! OMG...it seems like I will get rejection mail...I applied to NW but did not get any mails or phone calls...

cali_monkey Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Got my reject from Michigan. Sorry to hear that, lots of time left to hear back from your other schools. I'm sure you'll get a great offer!
mid25 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Rejected by Cornell today, at least my professor told me face to face (I am undergrad), the better news is that I made top 15 here, despite not having funding for the student to stay on who completes undergrad here. Overall, I was reaffirmed that my application was strong, and that I should be expecting positive feedback from the other schools to which I have applied
mid25 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 And a rejection email from Michigan follows the personal rejection... 2 down, 2 to go
ugg42 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 And a rejection email from Michigan follows the personal rejection... 2 down, 2 to go So sorry to hear! I received a rejection from U Mich today, too. I'm beginning to think this whole optimism thing is IMPOSSIBLE. I wonder if there are really that many more applicants this season, like U Mich has said?
mid25 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 So sorry to hear! I received a rejection from U Mich today, too. I'm beginning to think this whole optimism thing is IMPOSSIBLE. I wonder if there are really that many more applicants this season, like U Mich has said? I don't know, but I told my professor and he was really suprised, I guess they called him, and he was pretty sure that I was going to get in, who knows though, sometimes funding just doesn't work out like you had planned and need to accept less than originally the department had hoped for. Such is the current case with Cornell, who 3 years ago could accept 14, and now can barely afford 3
Sconnie Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I have yet to hear anything. I applied for PhD programs at Wisconsin (Communication Arts - Rhetoric), Minnesota (Communication Studies - Rhetorical Studies), Missouri (Political Communication), Ohio (Communication Studies - Rhetoric and Public Culture), Oklahoma (Political/Mass Communication), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Rhetoric/Public Communication). Hopefully some of these start letting me know soon so I can stop going crazy.
tiarabun Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 sorry to hear about the rejections i wish i knew what to say it's not you, it's them -- I guess?
dknows Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Those of you applying to NYU - MCC: did you have a POI there? I emailed the chair and she was quite friendly and encouraged my application, but nothing beyond that.
morningdew Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Just letting you guys know that I heard from University of Missouri and I am in! Yay! I really wish University of Wisconsin make their announcements soon. Good luck everyone!
Sconnie Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Just letting you guys know that I heard from University of Missouri and I am in! Yay! I really wish University of Wisconsin make their announcements soon. Good luck everyone! Sounds like we have some overlap on our schools...Congrats. Hopefully Missouri gets my results to me soon and Wisconsin lets both of us know.
morningdew Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Sounds like we have some overlap on our schools...Congrats. Hopefully Missouri gets my results to me soon and Wisconsin lets both of us know. Yea! It seems like it. A friendly competition huh? I applied to Ohio State Univeresity as well. What is your study focus? I hope you will get your happy news soon as well!
Sconnie Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 My focus is on rhetoric and political communication...so same departments but different areas
agej Posted February 7, 2013 Author Posted February 7, 2013 Anyone else quite confused as to why Cornell hasn't put us out of our misery yet?
beyondaboundary Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Hi Is anyone else applying to Bowling Green State? One of my tutors recommended the programme and I made contact with the Graduate Coordinator: "Your profile fits very well with our doctoral program and I would encourage you to apply as quickly as possible. We have rolling admissions but I am afraid you are a bit late for Fall 2013 admission. However, I would still like you to try and send your application package soon. Our website will provide you with all the information you need and the application blanks. You will need to download the graduate college apps from the graduate college website and provide all the necessary documents required in the appl. form as well as GRE scores. You do not need to submit TOEFL scores. You may download the graduate assistantship from the school of media and communication website and send it in with your letter of intent and three reference letters. All the documents should go in one package directly to the office of international services on bgsu campus. Contact me if you have questions. Best," and a POI: "We have come overlapping, common interests, so I'll be looking forward to hearing further from you. If you have a thesis on file that may be sent electronically or may be accessed from a website send me the URL or an attachment. Take Care" I fit into this programme and am intrigued by some of the faculty whose interests I share...does anyone have any further info on the programme they would be willing to share?
media/comm hopeful Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 For those applying to UW-Madison, to what track did you apply? I applied to the Communication Science track, had a skype interview on Jan. 18 and positive feedback from the professor in a few email exchanges afterward but haven't heard anything since Jan. 24. She said they only have 5 available spots this year and that she'd be in touch soon, but I am still waiting and the suspense is killing me!
