Thanks, sebastiansteddy!

Sure. The only reason I didn't include them in the original post is because I found a Twitter account today that was @(myfullname), created in the last two weeks, that is a ridiculous Nicki Minaj shrine. I've been paranoid all day that someone is trying to mess with me because though my name rhymes with "Nicki Minaj", I've never found anyone else with my name on Google before. If any potential program is reading this: I am in no way affiliated with that page, and I'm not a Nicki Minaj fan in any way, shape, or form.

Anyway, to answer your question: the program that mailed the acceptance letter is NIU. The one that nominated me for the fellowship is FSU.

I like the implication that you ought to be rejected if you are a fan of nicki minaj

(I don't like this implication)

(no, I am not a fan of nicki minaj)

(pretty bomb-ass verse in that one kanye west song though)

(lol)

Congrats HHeoS!

For what it's worth, my real twitter account @firstnamelastname is basically a several-thousand-tweet-long documentation of my deep fascination with Taylor Swift and that is so not even in the top ten reasons I believe I will be rejected across the board.

Thanks so much everyone! You guys are the best. Hoping to read good news from all of you in the future. I am pretty relieved, sebastiansteddy, but we'll see how long that lasts when February rolls around.

This made me feel a lot better, girl who wears glasses, but I do hope you aren't rejected completely. Maybe someone on some adcomm somewhere will be impressed by your passion/fascination if they happen to go acreepin' on Twitter.

Do you really think they check twitter? Mine is mostly about literature (with a couple of Seinfeld quotes and some Patriots fandom) so I am not too worried, but do you really think they go beyond the application you send in?

Probably not. I'm just a paranoid person in general. But there might be profs who Google applicants for whatever reason and might find a Twitter page if it's @(yourfullname). As someone said in another thread, though, he/she will probably be too embarrassed to bring up whatever was found privately in a committee discussion. However, I still think whatever he/she finds will help create his/her impression of what kind of person said applicant is.

Guys - I just Googled my name for the first time in a while, and I found a tweet from my account that I never actually tweeted. It said something about special K, and then linked to site of erotic stories. I deleted the hacked tweet, but I hope no adcomms think I write erotica!

That's ok, sebastiansteddy, the only other person in the world with my name lives on the opposite side of the globe and uploads pictures of the Klan. Get this: I learned about this individual before giving a lecture on Civil Rights. When a student didn't believe that I was previously an athlete, I google-imaged my name to prove it. BOOM, pictures of white hooded men and lynchings on the white screen in front of the whole class, with my name attached to them. I wish I was joking...

Oh my... that is certainly worse than my story! I also share my last name with a very well-known celebrity, so after about a page of stuff on me, it's all just stuff about him. But wow.. I am sorry about that! Haha that is sooo unfortunate!

Yeah, it was awkward. Fortunately I had a good connection with the students and nobody thought much of it (to my knowledge). I actually hope that google stalking is part of admission decisions. A committee would be able to differentiate between me and evil-me, and in doing so they would see that I have already contributed to the discussions that I've proposed to further engage. I didn't know how to sinuously mention such 'accomplishments' in my SOP, so I just left them to the CV...

    I love Nicki so much!

Me too! Despite some pretty unfeminist lyrics, she's got some pretty awesome feminist leanings in some of her interviews.

You guys... just make your tweets protected and change your avatar to something innocuous (if it's not already). Although I would proudly show off my Seinfeld quotes...

In case there are any other Comp Lit-ers out there, I just spoke to WashU and they're reviewing applications right now, hoping to send out notices in 2-3 weeks!

there is a popular (apparently?) author of erotica short stories who shares my real name...or, more likely, who took the same name as a nom de plume (my real name is quite unusual). I genuinely worried a lot about that when I was applying as her stories come up when you google me (or did, then...now the academic/real me has taken over the first page of google search results, yay!). Hopefully the fears were unfounded, since I did get in to places...adcomms definitely google you, though. Not all, but some; I can fairly positively identify those that googled me, because academia.edu gives you states on who got to your pages through a google search, and where they were searching from. Because I was in a different time zone it was quite easy to tell which part of the US or Canada was searching for me.

I'm a Comp Lit-er but I didn't apply to WashU. Have you got any news from other schools about when they're gonna report?

Congrats to everyone who's received good news! You all deserve all the best for your hard work. That's true for the people who've received not so good news too. It's just the beginning of what, I'm sure will be a roller coaster of a few weeks, I'm sure that each one of us will get the positive news that we're looking for.

I creep more than I post, but I wanted to add that I just got a decision from Ohio State (English)! No email or word on funding yet, since it rolled over in appstatus maybe 30 seconds ago. I'll be updating the results page, but this is my first notification of the season, so I'm just squeeing right now! :D :D :D :D
