SLP2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I got accepted to MGH! I am so excited! Hoping to get some need based financial aid
queenleblanc Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Congrats to all the MGH folks! Big day for all of you!
deleria Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I'm in at MGH as well! It was a really big surprise, considering how badly CSDCAS messed up my application... No mention of any aid, however. Have most people who have been accepted places heard about funding right away? Most of my schools have mentioned having to "finalize their budgets." I wonder if some of the state schools are going to be affected by sequestration and are waiting to see how this all turns out...
ladidah Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I emailed the MGH admissions committee this morning about funding. I was told that the financial aid office would contact people later this week IF they were offered scholarship money.
powellg2 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Being at work is terrible. I want to go home and check my mail!
badgerina Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Toothbrush, did you get accepted to UW Madison's post bacc program with a guarantee to go there for the masters after or just to the post bacc program? I'm in it right now Also, I have a question for the computer knowledgeable people out there. My computer is on its last legs, and I'll likely need a new one for grad school. I want something small, light, and portable. I have the choice between: 1.) A cheap windows notebook with Windows 8 for about $200-300 2.) A decent computer with Windows 8 for $500-700. Not really thrilled with that though, but it would serve my needs. 3.) The 11" Macbook Air (with the bigger hard drive) for $1,035. Would be awesome, but can I justify spending the extra money (from a small bank account) on it? If I get funding anywhere, the Mac is definitely mine. If not....bah humbug. Opinions? Experiences with WiFi or computing on your campuses? Though I'm a post bacc, I'm doing it at the same place I did my undergrad. Something to distract us from admissions for a minute

Something to distract us from admissions for a minute Honestly, I am a Mac fan.... But I would suggest getting a windows computer if you can, because according to the profs I have right now, some of the software you will use and may install uses the windows platform. I bought a refurbished HP laptop from IBM-Lenovo for under $300 early last summer and it has done really great. I opted for a heavier computer, something more higher durability ratings, since I anticipate having to carry it at least every other day. Technically you could install windows on a Mac, but honestly why would you do that to a Mac, that was my thought. Plus, for the price, if you are going to use windows anyway, get a sleek Vaio or something similar if you want the sleekness of the Mac air.
badgerina Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I loved doing the post bacc there. The only downside is that each class is offered once only per semester, so you make your schedule around theirs, which can make it hard to work at the same time. I do ABA therapy with children, meaning I only had weekends to work (come on kids, here's some coffee, it's table time til 10 at night! Not). I've found that my professors are extremely nice and accommodating. The com dis building is also located right on the lake, meaning you can sit there and work with your clients with a direct view of it I see you have other acceptances (congrats!) so if you do decide to go to Madison I can give you all sorts of info It's great, I was so disappointed I'm waitlisted for their program, but that's life!

Something to distract us from admissions for a minute I'm a HUGE Mac person, but it might be a wiser choice to save the money. I only use a Mac because my parents were nice enough to buy it for me-- if/when I need a new computer, it'll probably be something less expensive. And if you get a cheaper computer, you could also get a nice, new iPad...
SLPjmar Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I just got a 99% on my neuro exam! Hoping it is an indication of the week to come. queenleblanc, katieliz456 and SLPtoBEweee 3

Something to distract us from admissions for a minute I've run into problems with software that I needed for classes not running on my Mac (SALT, specifically). I have a desktop Mac, so I ended up getting a Windows laptop in anticipation of grad school. It was way cheaper, albeit a lot less pretty!
SLPtoBEweee Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I just got a 99% on my neuro exam! Hoping it is an indication of the week to come. That's awesome!! I hope my tests go that well this week!!! One tomorrow, one Wednesday, and one Thursday.. and TWO next Monday! I honestly don't even have time to be stressing but it's like second nature now!! Congrats to everyone who got into MGH!
badgerina Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Odd that SALT wouldn't run on a mac...I had a professor who loved it and was a Mac addict, but I just looked up the site and it's not offered for mac. That would be something serious to consider. It's just such a debate, I've not been happy with my computers (I'm on my second after the first one broke), and my batteries always die so quickly, which made me look into the macs. Then again, I'm still on Vista, maybe Windows 8 is different. Thanks for the input!
katieliz456 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I just got a 99% on my neuro exam! Hoping it is an indication of the week to come. Woo-hoo! You're on a roll! That is a great sign of things to come:)

I'd really like to buy a tablet for grad school, but needing to use specific software a lot will make that less feasible...
queenleblanc Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Good to know! I'd really like to buy a tablet for grad school, but needing to use specific software a lot will make that less feasible... I also have a really nice Mac desktop that I was hoping to use in general, but even the lab software I needed for anatomy used windows. Had to bite the bullet last summer. One of my profs advised me to go windows/PC. That doesn't preclude Mac, if you really want to go that route, but I am not sure if a tablet could run programs unless they are already in the App Store.:-/
queenleblanc Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I am on my quick lunch break at the moment, and I just was thinking... Wow, in 11 days, I might actually know if I am going to grad school in the Fall! Kind of excited to get home to check my mailbox! And really hoping that these schools stick to the timeline that they told me... When pigs fly, right!?!!

I have a desktop Mac, so I ended up getting a Windows laptop in anticipation of grad school. It was way cheaper, albeit a lot less pretty! I've also had some minor issues with WaveSurfer, Audacity, Pepper font, and some general problems watching observation videos that professors have uploaded. These issues were all manageable, but probably would have been faster and easier with a PC.
badgerina Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Good to know! I'd really like to buy a tablet for grad school, but needing to use specific software a lot will make that less feasible... I thought about buying an iPad to use in conjunction with my laptop (aka mostly broken laptop weighing a ton stays home, ipad comes with me to take notes on, etc), but since it can't run everything I'd need, I might as well use that money for a small laptop. But it's still cheap Microsoft or expensive Apple that's getting me down. Plus I'd have to buy office for either of them. Though after learning that SALT won't work on a Mac, I'm peeking into Windows 8. I guess a Mac will wait until I'm done with grad school. Bah humbug.

miscarthur Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Badgerina: can't you buy office through your university? Student copies are usually super cheap, or you get a massive student discount, etc.

Wait before buying Office - every school I've attended offers it either free (for Windows, at my last school) or deeply discouted ($6, for my old mac). It isn't the professional version, but it did include Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I've had a Mac for years, but for those exclusive Windows-only items, I've installed a virtual Windows drive on my Mac. Best of both worlds.
katieliz456 Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Decisions are slow today I'm going crazy here guys! I was so excited that it was finally Monday... but I guess we will still be waiting :/ Hopefully we get news sometime this week!
