speech310 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) I have noticed that there are not a lot of people who listed they applied at Iowa. Why is this, considering it is the top program? i put a lot of thought into whether or not to apply there (because my family and undergrad institution are very influenced by rankings), but I ultimately decided against it because it's very far from where my family lives and there's not much around there that I am familiar with--though I'm sure it is a wonderful program. I ended up only applying to schools in cities or near cities because I'm early 20s coming straight out of college and would love a city environment for grad school (in addition to amazing clinical opportunities that cities provide). So, I only ended up applying to one school in the top 10, but I don't personally think that US news rankings matter all that much anyway (contrary to the beliefs of my family/undergrad)! SLPjmar Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 On top of what I said before, I am very interested in working with deaf/hard of hearing/cochlear implant patients. I applied to programs where I felt it would be likely that I would work with my desired population.
midnight Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 Yeah, I think many SLP applicants mostly consider three things: location, cost, and academic/research/professional interests. Rankings don't seem to be as much of a concern since most programs have incredibly high job placement numbers. My list is so short because I'm an out-of-field applicant who wanted to stay in my hometown or move to a state that my husband and I have considered moving to for years now; I'm a little older and married, and my life is a bit more settled now. If I were a younger in-field applicant with practical experience under my belt, I think I would have applied to schools all over the country, e.g., Iowa, Wisconsin, Vandy, the schools in Boston, etc.

badgerina Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I just peeked at the rankings today, had no idea Iowa was number one! However, I have family in Iowa and it's not too far from home, so I applied there, though I can only go if I get funding. And Wisconsin's my alma mater and post bacc school, so applying (and immediately becoming waitlisted) was natural. Though I will laugh if I get into Iowa and waitlisted at WI
SLPjmar Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 jmarti, I'm being nosy: Is there a reason you didn't apply to Gallaudet? No worries. I currently live in the MD/DC area and the cost of living + school is just too high. Plus, I haven't heard the greatest things about the program.
Tuck Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I didn't apply there for two reasons. I want to work in a medical setting before heading to my PhD - acute or subacute care. A more urban location offers better rotations and CFY options for this. Second is location. I don't like the idea of living somewhere cold and flat, and my S.O. needs to be able to get a job wherever I go to school. He works in the tech industry. I made a list of about 12 schools that would be a good fit for me academically, and we narrowed that list together based on places he'd be willing/able to move to. The schools I ended up with are in Chicago (where his current company's headquarters is located), Salt Lake City (surprisingly, sort of a hub for the kind of work he does), Boulder (Denver is close enough to commute to and would be great for him), and Nashville (maybe a little harder for him, but driving distance from both our families and my first choice academically). It's not all about him, though. Each of these schools has multiple faculty working in my area of interest (read: potential thesis supervisors), appealing placements, and generally appealed to me academically.
TalkItOut_9 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 (edited) It concerns me that the SLP threads seem dead compared to last year at this time. Are all the schools going to mail out their admissions out on the same day?! Imagine how crazy that would be... Clearly, I'm getting impatient. Eeek. travelnguy Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I thought about Iowa, but the tuition was the factor for me. My wife and I are moving to the states are are wanting to set up in the Midwest. I applied to schools in Nebraska and Minnesota.

This is true, but most of my schools didn't start notifying until the end of February/early March. It sucks, I know. Have you checked the results page for when your schools typically notify? Also, as an aside, it's possible that some of your schools in the NY/MA area are slightly delayed due to the blizzard. Everything was shut down for awhile.
badgerina Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I actually became so impatient that I pulled out the February 2012 calendar on my computer and compared the notification dates from last year to now, looking at which week of February they came out compared to today's date. Didn't really get much out of it though. SLPjmar 1
katieliz456 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Yeah, I think the blizzard screwed stuff up :/ Also, apparently there were a LOT of CSDCAS issues and delays this year... moreso than usual :/ Also, as an aside, it's possible that some of your schools in the NY/MA area are slightly delayed due to the blizzard. Is it wrong that I'm hoping the boards are kind of dead because that might mean there are fewer applicants this year? sugarmilk and SLPjmar 2
queenleblanc Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Is it wrong that I'm hoping the boards are kind of dead because that might mean there are fewer applicants this year? HA! I had the SAME thought! I'm hoping the competition isn't as crowded so that I can get a spot!!! ;-) I'm also waiting probably until the end of February for the earliest notifications, and that's if I even get one acceptance during the first cycle while "the cream of the crop" decides where they are going. Hopefully I will know something before the end of April as far as where I'm attending... but at this point, I'm just patiently waiting, obsessively checking email, and YES I did check the mailbox today, even though it is a federal holiday. Baseless wishes. :-/
TalkItOut_9 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Oh boy, I forgot that today is technically a federal holiday...
SLPjmar Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Does anyone know how competitive South Carolina's program actually is?
queenleblanc Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 When I went to USC's info day in the fall, they said that when they send out admission offers, each candidate gets TEN DAYS to respond, and then they go to the waitlist. They only send out like 30 offers or something like that- the max they can enroll, and they fill each spot. There are only two programs in all of SC for SLP (USC and SC State), so I could imagine a lot of applicants. I think the program coordinator said they usually get 350 to 400 applications. The director, when asked, said that the first offers usually go to "the cream of the crop" and then they go down the list. I think I remember them doing a point system. So... even if you get waitlisted at first, you usually WILL hear something. Once all spots are full, they send out rejection notices.
SLPjmar Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 It sounds very similar to other institutions. Though when I had looked at EdFind previously, it said USC admitted something like 38% of applicants. So I wasn't sure if it was feasible, or impossible.
Tuck Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 I don't understand how you can respond in 10 days when you have perhaps not even heard from other schools to which you've applied. ??!!?!
speech310 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 for those of you who mentioned a vanderbilt open house for accepted students, do you know if it's one specific day? or is it still that you can visit any monday or friday?
jcspeech Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Hey everyone - so I'm new to this website and anxiously awaiting to hear from all of the schools I applied to. It's amazing seeing so much positive energy on here though. I hope everyone finds a spot somewhere. I've applied to LIU CW Post, Hofstra, Adelphi, New York Medical College, Mercy, Newpaltz, Columbia, and NOVA and I've been invited for an interview with LIU and NYMC. Good luck to everyone!!!!!

queenleblanc Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 I don't understand how you can respond in 10 days when you have perhaps not even heard from other schools to which you've applied. ??!!?! The explanation given was that they want candidates who KNOW that they want to go to SC, so when they get their acceptance letter, it's easy to respond. Oh, and $500 is also due with your response to the acceptance letter! From what I can tell, if we don't hear from them for the first cycle until mid-March, and I hear from the rest of my universities as they have done in the past, I should have heard something from almost everyone by the time I hear from SC. At least, that is my hope. The only catch would be if I get wait listed anywhere.
jcspeech Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Sounds like a New Yorker? That obvious?? Lol.. Yes, I am
