Vavasor Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question.
TripWillis Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Smells like desperation in here. I understand. Yes, most schools are closed tomorrow and, thus, the faculty will be off. dazedandbemused, yellow.wallpaper and pomoisdead 2 1
chaucerettescs Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Smells like desperation in here. I understand. Yes, most schools are closed tomorrow and, thus, the faculty will be off. The University of Michigan isn't. Now, whether the English offices themselves will be open, I don't know, but faculty won't be off.

I'm just going on experience. Faculty and staff tend not to answer or operate e-mail on holidays or weekends. I'm willing to bet there will be posts tomorrow, but fewer than usual, for sure.

practical cat Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I don't think it'll be any slower than any other Monday we've had so far. A couple of places might finish what they started last week but I doubt there'll be any new news.

pomoisdead Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Rather than take someone's "experience" to heart, look it up...last year was "D-Day" for Brown and UMass-Amherst...so no, they don't necessarily take the day off. There's no set rule to anything. Don't be surprised when people hear from schools tomorrow.
Usmivka Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Academics taking the day off?! What sort of craziness is this?
thestage Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 one could find heaps of them who take a great many days off TripWillis 1
asleepawake Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Does it matter? Will we take the day off from worrying if they do? sebastiansteddy, Imogene, justkeepswimming and 1 other 4
TripWillis Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I think we should dispense with that myth (perpetuated by the Semenza book) that academics don't/can't take days off. It's not that academics don't take days off, it's that they have nightmare schedules. I sometimes work from 8:30-8:00, but I work long hours so I can get Saturday and Sunday off. Otherwise, I'd never see my boyfriend.

I'm not saying schools won't notify today, just far fewer than usual. Although I agree with you that pomo is dead. Edited February 18, 2013 by TripWillis
jazzyd Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Welp, it's all quite here at 7:33AM CST, 8:33 eastern, and 5:33 pacific. Might as well call that a day. (I jest)
Gwendolyn Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 (edited) I know Ohio State isn't closed and I know of no schools in my area that are closed either. I definitely have class today. Edited February 18, 2013 by Gwendolyn
getoutofmyhouse Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 The same should be asked about Family Day in Canada... bedmas and Fayre 2
It's (Not) About Me Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 The University of Chicago is definitely open today. At least one (non-English) department is interviewing prospective students today, too.

yellow.wallpaper Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Am I the only one who woke up from a nightmare this morning about another rejection? Nope.... I dream about that at least twice a week.
Troppman Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Nope, one rejection today followed by an offer from my top choice! Vavasor and Gustav 2
Vavasor Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 Nope, one rejection today followed by an offer from my top choice! Congratulations! With any luck maybe I'll get something like that by the end of the week! Troppman 1
