  1. Yes, none of this makes sense...which is why we're doing it. Good luck in your programs, folks.
  2. I have an MFA. I also worked two jobs while double majoring as an undergrad. I also work a night job currently while teaching at three different colleges. Anything else you want to take issue with? Edit: It's about dedication. Nothing is "hard" if you know how hard you're working for it. This is what separates those who love what they do versus the idea of it all.
  3. Work. Not hard to do when you're taking 1-3 classes.
  4. Long story short, young and dumb. Family was in a very good financial standing when I was going into college, so I took a low-funded offer from a good school far from home rather than a fully funded offer close to home. Was told "it would all be taken care of". Economy collapsed with the family business. Rest is history.
  5. Sounds like we're in a more similar situation than others. There's a huge difference between chasing an MA and paying a little for one because it's what we need to get back into the swing of things (however you want to interpret that).
  6. THIS I certainly agree with. My prospect is only taking on a little over 11k, which I'll most likely actually pay while going. My MFA was fully funded and I'd never suggest going all out in spending for a humanities MA. See if you can improve your credentials and apply another year. I'd rather spend 1-2k on tests, materials, app fees, etc. Chances are if you're "good enough" for an unfunded MA now you'll certainly get funded options with a bit more "oomph" behind your stuff.
  7. My mantra has been "No funding, no go"...especially since I'm 120k in debt thanks to my BA. I have an MFA (thanks for the free ride BGSU!) but it seems to be getting me nowhere with PhD hopes because it was a studio based program. I've been accepted to BC for the unfunded MA and am seriously considering going, but only with caveats. 1) I can transfer 6 credits, which helps with the first year. Classes are like 4k each, so I only need to spend 12k to get through the first year. 2) I've been adjuncting with much success for 4 years now, so my teaching skills are varied and polished. If I can score the TA fellowship 2nd year I'm golden. 3) What's another 10k? I mean, really... Sounds like for some of us the unfunded MA isn't a death sentence. In fact, I'd venture that it's what we need for the future. Weigh your options, fellow unfundeds! If you think the juice is worth the squeeze, get it!
  8. Well, an oddly bittersweet moment for me as I've been denied PhD acceptance at BC (not officially) but accepted into the MA! Pretty cool, despite already having an MFA. Sad part is, though, no funding right now. I cannot spend another dime on my education, so here's to hoping everyone turns down the tuition remission and it gets to me! Does anyone know how long credits are good for? I completed 1 year of an MA in 2006-2007 but never finished because I got into the MFA. Anyone think some of those credits could be applied over?
  9. Anyone else still waiting to hear from Boston College recently have their options chance on the Agora portal? I still don't have a decision but all of a sudden there are financial aid tabs and such? Sorry if I pop this around multiple threads.

  11. Applying for fee waivers is a foreign concept for me. Quite honestly, I made the decision to apply too late and don't really know much about the whole process. At least now I'll know and spend more time. Are these usually through the departments or private funds?
  12. "generally the result" shows cause and effect relationship...No one is being rude to anyone here whatsoever. Please, down vote me all day long. But this is, once again, where people are being whiny over something they believe over someone else.
  13. Inherently false. You shouldn't have to critically think to be good to people. And if you think critical thinking and being good to people go hand in hand, I contend you've never had to fire someone based purely on monetary reasons. They're talking about "Fat Studies"...everyone needs to take themselves a bit less seriously. Don't like the thread? Tread (troll) elsewhere.
