  1. I know! It sounded much more mean in German...as if they were taunting me. But yeah, I'm sure it was just a standard letter.
  2. I figured! Congrats to everyone who was accepted!
  3. The average modern English speaker would have trouble understanding Shakespeare, which is quite unfortunate. In terms of Latin to Modern Spanish, I do think they are both vastly different. Sure, there are many cognates, but Latin grammar is way more complex than Spanish grammar (the same applies to other Romance languages such as French, Italian, and Portuguese, which I also have studied). While I don't know Old English very well, I do think it is more similar to Modern Standard German (probably more similar to Old High German, actually, because of its inflectional system) than Modern English. Ancient Languages are so important. I have learned a lot more about English (and other modern languages) through the study of Classical Latin, Ancient Greek, and Old Icelandic. We do need to value them so so much...specially to avoid having young, eager freshmen tell me "So Shakespeare is like Old English, right?"
  4. Good luck and I hope you hear back from them soon!
  5. I applied for the Intensive Language Program. I emailed the DAAD NY office (Amra Dumisic) from my professional email. What did you apply for?
  6. Yeah. I emailed them in March and they said from Late March to Mid-April.
  7. A guy from my department who applied two years ago said that a girl in the Summer program had heard back in May (because she had been waitlisted). I just really would love to know what I'm doing this Summer as soon as possible.
  8. Hey guys! I'm walking into this thread pretty late. I still have not heard back and the DAAD portal just says "Selection Made" and has not changed. Who's still waiting to hear back?
  9. That sounds amazing! Congratulations! I'm still waiting to hear from the University Apartments. :/
  10. I downloaded the "The Guide for Graduate Students" from the website and it has helped a lot on knowing where to shop. They have a lot of thrift shops, winter equipment stores and so on! I also have no idea on apartment searching either!
  11. I'm proficient in Spanish and French. I do know a lot of German, but definitely need some practice before heading straight into a novel in the language. I need to fulfill my language requirements like Latin and/or Greek, and I think I'll definitely take Latin. I also know a lot of Portuguese, but won't be using it for my specific interests. Apart from the requirements, I want to finish learning Old Icelandic (I took a course on it last semester and fell in love!) and French Creole (I know a decent amount of it)! I do, however, would also love to learn Swedish, Dutch, Hungarian, Polish and Bulgarian. That's a lot, but I love learning. Although I'm proficient in almost all Romance languages, I have no interest in learning Italian. I think my language interests are definitely more varied than my specific interests for grad school!
  12. I'm an avid guitar player, so I understand where you're coming from. I think it's about finding the necessary tools and people that will encourage your music.
  13. What do you mean by this I know what you mean. I don't really know how much I can trust University housing. They said they would let me know thirty days before the date I can move in. What if they deny my application and it's June and I have nowhere to live? I do have "priority", but still...
  14. I just wanted to write that I've been looking into apartments online and all I've read have been horrible things. I chose to look for a small studio/efficiency instead of university housing. :/ I seriously don't even know what would be an appropriate place to live. Not location-wise, but apartment complex-wise.
