You call a university and they say:

"I'm sorry, they haven't made a decision on your application"

....yet you know they have made decisions for others. I did this just recently. The admissions counselor asked for my social sec #, and looked up my application status. I can't tell if she's lying, or telling the truth. She definitely looked up something, because I didn't give her my name....and she called me by my first name, before I hung up.

I wonder if they let the obvious "yes" students know they got in first, and they have a "maybe" pile that takes longer to sort through....lol.

UGH...

I think that if you were accepted, she would have told you. And if you were rejected... well, she could have said, "They've made a decision, I can't tell you what it is but you should be notified soon." Or, she could have told you what she did. But it seems most likely that they haven't entered your decision into whatever computer system she's using yet, and are either still thinking/have you on an internal waitlist, or you are rejected and they haven't gotten around to entering that information in.

Thanks for replying.

Yeah, so pretty much I can't really pull anything from her statement. I would think she would have told me "you'll be receiving something soon" if I didn't get in. I would hope she wouldn't let me hold on to that little bit of hope, if there is absolutely no chance of me getting in....lmao. But maybe that's just me being optimistic.... .

I can wait longer....just as long as I know its not a definite "no".

I may call again, hopefully I'll get someone else. If that person says "a decision has been mailed, etc"...then I'll know FOR SURE that I didn't get it.

I guess all those "" are nervous laughs... I seem to be having the same syndrome lately while talking of my applications

Better laugh than cry in desperation, I guess.... Hang in there... we all should

That was too funny.

Hmm...I had a similar situation via email. It was so cryptic "we hope to know more soon" and the very next day someone was accepted.

C'mon she had to know!

Good luck though.

I laugh a lot in real life.....seriously  . I'm a very hardworking and driven person, but I learned not to take myself so seriously sometimes. Life will go on, even if I do get rejected.

I'm a little bit older too (24), so my experience applying this time is a bit different. And I already have a good job (but its just not in the career field I want to be in....lol). But in these times, any job is good. I work in medicine, but I want to do music business. I have NO CLUE how I got here....but I'm not complaining. 8)

I AM ready for them to make a decision on my application. But its nothing I can do about it now.

Well that's a good thing XD

Woow 24 is a bit older? and here I was thinking I must be one of youngest people around here (I am 21, and will be 22 when the fall semester starts...) What is the age range for applicants then?

Loool I have a good job... in the career field I want to be in... and... it just doesn't fill me  guess that is why I am applying... looking for something more... or maybe just being academically greedy

Well I guess we all are...

Ugh, the same thing happened to me! I called UNC to see what the deal was, and was told I was on the interest list of X professor, that I had been corresponding with a little some time ago. My advisor suggested I shoot him an email, so I did so on Monday, and no word

I never know what to think!

P.S. In response to the age question, I'm 22 (as of March 13! too bad I didnt get a nice acceptance letter for a present  )!

Starting March 1st, people started posting both acceptances and waitlisteds regarding the program I applied to. I still hadn't heard anything by March 13th, so I e-mailed the department and asked if they knew anything. I received a one-line response similar to yours: "Your file is still currently under review." I figured this meant they just tossed all the rejects in a pile and maybe didn't bother to upload them to the website until after all the admits had been sorted. (The logic being, if they're already sending out waitlists, surely all the accepts have been determined thus far...)

Then, on midnight this Tuesday, they posted another round of acceptances and now I'm in.

I don't know what their methods are...it still seems odd to me that they would accept some, waitlist some, then accept some more (and I was never on the waitlist; I had inquired about this a few times in the interim period).

So...don't give up!

@ djrg.....I guess 24 is not THAT old. But I supervise student workers at my current job, and they consider me old. I guess after hearing people say it over time, you start to believe it. When I was in undergrad, I definitely thought 24 was "up there"....lol.

@laebot....thanks for posting that. They probably are doing the same thing with my program. I hope.

I actually called again, I think it was a different girl this time. I got the same answer "no decision has been made". And I asked her if they are making decisions in batches, she said "i really don't know". Hmph. :| Is everything that top secret?! I mean daaannnngggg... But at least I didn't get a different answer from earlier today....hopefully this truly means they haven't decided yet.

I wonder if they put a "tag" on your application every time you call to check the status....then the admissions committee could find out how much I've called. Maybe that would affect my acceptance, so I better not call again.

What do y'all think THIS means? U of MD was supposed to be finished notifying MLS applicants today... and I got this email:

"At this time we are unable to offer a final decision on your application because your application requires further review by the Committee. We will review your application again and contact you if we need any additional information to support your application."

I am so confused!

@professor2000 Loool well aging is just a state of mind I guess!

@Juliet73 got similar mail from one of my top choices, however they were much more clear and said that final results have been delayed to first week of April.. as always.. we should only learn to wait... this process is a test to your patience, I guess...

Hello all! Please share your interpretations of my e-mail exchange with a Graduate (not departmental) admissions assistant:

(sent at 3:56 pm):

Hello Ms. [so-and-so],

I applied to [this program] on [date]. Many of my friends here at [my school] who also applied to the [same program] have received letters with their admissions status over the past two weeks; I have yet to receive any mail. The website application status has not changed.

If you have any additional information regarding my application, I would be very appreciative if you would kindly let me know.

Thank you very much, and enjoy your weekend!

(received at 4:00 pm):

A decision was made on you today so you should be getting a letter in the mail soon.

Thanks,

[so-and-so]

Impressions? I can't tell whether she is hiding bad news or simply commenting on my application status, as I requested, and not the decision (as I thought I implied that I wanted). I should have been more specific in my request... At least I'll know for sure in the next couple days! Thanks all.

Couldn't have said it better! "Rejected until proven accepted"... If you read that thread you'll understand it is not to be pessimists.. It is just the healthier way of looking at these things... stayed tuned.. it could be an acceptance... but before you know the outcome... it is healthier to believe it will be a rejection...

Is this hopefull?

"I am writing concerning your application to the graduate program of the xxxxxxxxxx. We have now had the opportunity to review in detail your application, among about 220 applications to our graduate program. This was an intensive process, and I want to inform you that we are impressed with your application and it is still active. We are currently waiting decisions from some other applicants before we can make a final decision about yours. We wanted you to know the specific status of your application and hope you understand.

We will contact you as soon as we are able to reach a final decision on your application."

That's good news: it seems that you've been placed on a waitlist and the school is now waiting to hear back from its admitted applicants, whether they accept or decline the admissions offer. Now you wait and hope others decline, so they'll have a spot to offer you. You might also want to contact the school, reaffirm your interest in it and ask if the list is ranked and what your rank is. You could also ask how many applicants were admitted off the waitlist in previous years. That'll give you a good estimation of your odds. Good luck!

I would think that 24 would be more of the average age around here, since on most the forums I've been on the posters have been working for a few years or getting a masters etc. and often mention the benefits of taking a few years off after undergrad. You can feel young again, professor: I'm 27.

^^^

Well, the results are IN.....I've been accepted to NYU Steinhardt!

So that waiting was actually good news. :D They sent me an email today, however I don't have the official letter yet. It kind of makes me nervous....like what if they sent the wrong email to me?!....

Okay, I need to take a step back and relax now. The waiting had me on edge...and I'm thinking crazy right now, lol.

Best of luck to everyone else. 8)
