Asian Studies 2014

Recommended Posts

Congrats to everyone who got into Yale, Harvard, and Stanford!

Any ideas on USC vs UW vs UMich? I'm leaning towards Seattle (Ann Arbor in second place), but still waiting to hear about scholarships and stuff...

Just curious how you guys would compare Berkeley's Asian Studies MA to Harvard's RSEA Masters. I was just accepted to Harvard's program today, and am trying to chose between the two. My main research interest is early Chinese philosophy, and both seem to be pretty strong programs.

Cool! I'm also doing early China, and weighing between Berkeley and Harvard. I went to Berkeley for my undergrad and have a pretty good idea of what the Berkeley program would be like, specifically in regard to studying early Chinese philosophy haha. I'll try to give you a more detailed write up on this later.

I still haven't decided, but UCLA is top of my list at the moment. I'm hoping to do a round of campus visits before making a final decision. But it would be great to end up at the same place kindkw, if that's what you'll be choosing.

And if anyone wants any information on the Columbia MA, I'd be happy to oblige.

Congrats, everyone!

Someone should make a google doc for all the East Asian specialists so we can list where we got in and where we're going and stuff, and perhaps even network with people who are in our programs!

I second that!

Just got my last response. 5 acceptances (MA) and 3 rejections (PhD). One thing I learned is it seems pretty darn impossible to get into a PhD program without an MA.

Now to make that final decision........

Aye, I learned the same lesson, Hige....and almost the same profile as you: 6 acceptances, 3 rejections. I am still super excited, just not looking forward to doing it all again for phd....plus, I need to take the GRE again to apply for phd, since I last took it five years ago! 哈哈

Yes, it looks like I will be heading for my MA first as well!

I have a question for all of you about the FLAS. I missed the school deadline for one of my programs but is it possible for me to apply independently?

Is anyone else here doing Asian studies with a focus on History?

Congrats to all the acceptances. One thing I noticed about East Asian studies is that we seem to have all our programs at top flight institutions.

^I think that's something you're going to have to work out with your program. I'm not sure that you can apply independently; I think FLAS are given to schools who then distribute them accordingly.

Our programs are mostly at top institutions because while a lot of places have Asian Studies, some of the subfields we're interested in are pretty specific and are only available at certain places. I guess these tend to be the top places who have the financial resources to support such programs. And that's when things come down to fit with the specific program. At least, that's what I think.

Would anyone be willing to help take a look at my FLAS statement of purpose? O:) I'd really appreciate it!

Yeah, I sent an email out today to the graduate coordinator.

I would probably have time tomorrow to look at your SOP if you want to email it to me or msg it to me.

Cheers!

Are someone still waiting for the application decision of RSEA MA program of Harvard? Columbia requires to reply with the decision these days so I really hope to make a decision after considering the application result from Harvard.

I'm also waiting for Harvard RSEA… emailed both GSAS and RSEA. They only told me the results are either gonna be available online or sent via postal mails… In short, they didn't want to email me the decision. Not sure if i should just freak out or keep on hoping..

I have not received official notification either. I think we are all rejected since we didn't get the email. Heart-broken:(

All interested in Columbia MA:

Spoke to their office today, was informed that the board will not conclude until the end of next week (21 March) and the results will be sent out following several days of review.  Expect words around the first week of April, at the earliest.

Hopefully this will ease some minds and save the Columbia office from answering the same questions over and over.

Lastly, I could sure use some discussion on Georgetown vs Berkeley Asian Studies... anyone else in the same boat?

^I'm not in the same boat, but my impression is that they prepare you for different things.

Berkeley seems more of a stepping stone to a PhD, whereas Georgetown also includes functional training. So I guess it depends more on what you wanna do with the degree.

Things have gotten quiet around these parts. I feel like some people are making decisions by now. I am real close to signing the dotted line for Hawaii, but I am waiting on final funding info from every school I was accepted to so as to make the responsible decision.

What about you folks? Where ya heading this fall?

University of Michigan! They offered me the FLAS and are subsidizing the rest of the tuition. Other schools only gave partial funding for the first year or none. I'm still waiting to do the campus visit before signing off 100% though.

I have decided, Hawaii here I come. Full tuition remission plus a little stipend. Super pumped, the school is an especially good for the somewhat nascent area of Japanese studies I am going to focus on.

I don't suppose anyone else is heading to Hawaii?

Hello, everyone on this forum!
I've been following this thread for a while, but there are a lot of questions left for me though...
Rignt now I'm on my 3rd year in BA in East Asian Studies, Japanese politics to be precise. Japanese level - N2, next year I'll go to Soka University as exchange student to have more practice in Japanese.
But I have already started planning pursuing my MA in East Asian Studies - I'm especially interested in USA universities, but it's very hard to choose among them.

Do any USA universities have MA programs that specialize in East Asian Economics? Am I right that Berkeley and Georgetown offer it?

I have found some such programs in UK - Sheffield and Nottingham.

^Dunno about anywhere else, but Georgetown offers 3 specializations, one of which is Political Economy/Business of East Asia. And you can also pursue a certificate (I guess it's kinda like a minor) in International Business Development.

Offered a FLAS at a school after I already accepted a different offer (and declined the offer at FLAS school - guess they didn't get the memo). What a great way to make you second-guess your decision!
