Hey Fall 2014 Applicants!

So I'm just starting to hear back from some schools about interviews. And I have one coming up in 2 weeks! How is everyone else prepping for their interview? I'm a little bit nervous about mine only because it's scheduled so late in the day. I feel like I'm at a disadvantage because the admin will be tired of interviewing by the time I meet with them, and probably wishing they could go home. Any advice?

Lol!  I don't think that is the case.  In your case, you will have the advantage of recency effect.

Thanks! I actually didn't think about that! Makes me feel slightly better. ;D

I agree, you can make a lasting impression on the Admissions Committee if you are having your interview later in the day! Good luck with everything!

I am preparing for my interview on February 22nd, and I can't help but be nervous about the committee asking me questions based on actual school work. I have been out of school for over 2 years now, and I'm a little rusty. I know it seems a little over the top, but do you think they will ask actual questions based on information you learned in undergraduate, or do you think it'll be basic interview questions (tell me about yourself, what are your weaknesses, etc)?

I was always under the assumption that interviews were more to get a feel for the person and their interpersonal communicational skills as opposed to questions about material learned in undergrad, but like I said, just an assumption!  I have an interview over the phone with Fort Hays State TOMORROW.  The guy who will be interviewing me has also helped me a lot during the past 9 months to gain a perspective about how he and others in his committee view applicants.  If there is anything I've learned form him its to be real.  They wanna see you as a person, not you as a SLP robot who tries to tie everything into speech somehow.  So I guess take that for what it is worth! :)

By the way, the guy is an ASHA "fellow" and travels to evaluate other programs often.

Twinguy7, I had an interview and they did test me on things I learned in undergraduate courses. I think it really dependent on the school and how they construct interviews.

Arcanelady27- what types of questions did you get? And yes, I agree... It depends on the school as to what they will ask, etc. I have friends who have gone to "on campus" interviews any they seem to always have questions on undergrad material at the on campus interviews. But I would love to hear what type of questions you were asked pertaining to undergrad. That would help a lot! :)

I interviewed last year at Arizona State, and they asked get-to-know-you questions, as well as things like "how do you cope with stress," "what would you bring to our graduate program," and "what was your most difficult undergraduate course and why." They didn't ask me anything at all about field-related stuff...although the writing sample I had to do that day did.

I'm in the same boat! I graduated in 2009. But I think the majority of schools will probably be asking questions to find out what type of person you are--your own people skills, etc. But I'm just as nervous that they'll ask me a question that stumps me because it's been so long. ;D

I've been writing down a list of questions and I practice answering them out loud. I need to practice wording and thinking of specific examples so that when I'm being interviewed, I'll have material already prepared. Even if a question is slightly different from one I practiced, I can easily tweak what I've thought through.

twinguy7, do you mind sharing what questions you get asked in your interview today?? That would be awesome.

Hello all -

In the midst of my axiety while awaiting responses, I found this forum and find it super helpful!  I have an interview March 14th at CSULA and am wondering if anyone can share their interview experiences.  I'm super nervous and hope I don't get stuck on something.  I have also applied to CSULB, CSUN, and NOVA.  I have only heard back from CSULA so far (I am currently finishing the certificate program there).  Thanks!

Hi jmeister2000, I also interviewed at CSU San Marcos, it went pretty well I think, but I'm not sure what they're looking for. On their website they gave the impression that everyone gets invited to the interview no matter what. Did you get this impression? There was quite a few people there!

Hi Jmeister!

Just curious when did you interview and then hear back from Nova? I have been waiting over a month for a response it's driving me crazy! Also, are you doing the online distance program or on campus?

I know this is unrelated, but you've already heard from Northern Arizona University? Via Email???

I also am awaiting a response from NOVA.  I applied for the distance program - with a CA cohort that meets so it's not solely online.  I also am axiously awaiting a response!

I know it's been a while since we've posted here...but I'll write here anyway!

I have a couple interviews coming up and I was wondering what advice people had with interview preps!

Do schools ask field-related questions or is it all getting to know as a student questions?

Someone earlier mentioned something about a writing sample.  Do all schools have that?
