Hi Aspireperspireinspire. I was accepted to the Biomed Sci. program for F14. I'm a previous UCR student if you have any questions about the campus, community, etc. Congratulations and welcome to UCR!

Hey Aspireperspireinspire, I was accepted at UCR for the English PhD, not 100% sure if I'll be attending (mainly due to my partner's job situation) but we both hope to be in Riverside in the fall! Will you be attending the open house in March?

I am not going to UCR for graduate school, but it was my alma mater.

Congratulations! Despite the location, I actually really enjoyed my years there. If you have any questions about food (especially Asian food), and housing, let me know :)

Not much activity here but I want to greet all the new grad students at UCR. Glad to be part of such a wonderful family!

I'll be attending next year, anyone have information about living on campus as a grad student? At first glance, it seems cheaper than finding an apartment.

UCR alum here.  Beg to differ, living on campus is actually more expensive from what I remember.  They charge you way too much money for too small a space, even though it's convenient.  Apartments are maybe a block from the edge of campus, and some come furnished.  You're better off living in apartments near the university and finding furniture on craigslist.  If you have a car (UCR tends to be a commuter school), you can find housing in Moreno Valley off Day Street (apartments) or find shared housing for way cheaper.

Good news to me really since I would have to give up my cat to live on campus. Do you have any places you've heard just horrible things about that I should avoid?

Hey mobilehobo, did you happen to go to UCR's recruitment day? I'm also heading there this fall (Plant Biology) and during all the meet-and-greets and made some contacts with current grad students. Basically I asked around about places to live and immediatly found a sublet (I'm actually starting in July, so I needed a place early). All the other students were extra kind, so if you have any contacts down there I would just ask around. From what I understand rent is pretty cheap (though I am from the Bay Area) and it's DEFINITELY better not to have campus housing.

Good Luck!

My visitation isn't until April 9th, but I'm planning on doing some apartment hunting while I'm down there. Hopefully I'll still have time to get a decent place by then. I'm coming from a Kansas town that has one of the lowest cost of living in the nation, so seeing everything over 700/month hurts, haha! I live in the "pricey" apartments in my town and they're 600/month, fully loaded.

I also start in July for the jumpstart/Gradedge program, is that what you're doing?

Hi. I plan to attend UC Riverside for Chemical and environmental engineering this fall. Just got the offer last week. They haven't said anything about the visitation weekend yet.. Will have to start looking for apartments soon I guess.. Do you know whether the visitation weekend is university wide or department specific?

Mine is department specific. Your department may still have a visitation.  They sent the information for mine only a couple weeks in advance, but I emailed their graduate assistant right after my offer and asked and got the information earlier since I needed to know for work.

oh nice that's good to know! i've been nervous about contacting my POIs, i don't want to bug them lol.

i applied to earth sciences. do you think different departments send out letters at different times? i guess it might depend on how many apps they've gotten in a given year, as well...

There was a more active topic about UCR elsewhere. I think in the cities section. Anyway I applied to UCR chem and was accepted on jan 8 or 9 I think, a few days after the deadline. When were your guys' deadlines? Btw my app was submitted exactly on the deadline day

My app was due jan 5. But the dept didnt start looking at them until the 9th from what ive been told

Now im freaking out! UCR has the PI i reeeaaallllyyy want to work under.

my deadline was december 5th (that was the priority deadline, anyways; my POI told me i could submit my app as late as like early january and still be considered), i think one of my recommendations was a little late, as well as possibly my transcript. he said they wouldn't get back to me until later in january or possibly early february, so i guess i still might get in.

what dept did u apply to at UCR? Im curious because your info says your program is geosci/astrobiology. Did UCR have a program in astrobiology or something related? Thatd be very interesting

@quanto i applied to the earth sciences department, but the professor i'd like to work with studies astrobiology! so there's no specific program, but there are people working with NASA there.

Hello all,

First post. Glad to see this thread. I was accepted two days ago into the English PhD program with a fellowship. I think I'm still in shock.

Hello! I will (probably) be attending UCR for an Art History MA in the fall. Very excited, also slightly clueless.
