Is anyone planning on going to AHA in January? If nothing else, those of us who are there could do a meetup. That's probably the broadest conference where we'd have the most overlap.

 

If nothing else, I was kicking around the idea of putting on a graduate conference in the next few years, provided whatever institution I'm at would be willing to sponsor it. Anyone want to be on the committee?

Wow! Had you accepted an offer from a different uni at the time? 

At that point yes- I had decided a few days prior that even if I got in to Michigan, I really wanted to go to another program. Had about half an hour of buyer's remorse when I turned them down, but in the end I was (and still am!) extremely happy with my choice.

 

That said, if you're on a wait list that you are considering, do wait to accept another institution. It very well may be last minute that you find out if you get in.

I may go to the AHA if my panel gets accepted. If you haven't been to the AHA before, do it. It is a great opportunity to talk (and drink) with other historians.

I plan on attending every year and working to build the connections necessary for a good job. That includes maintains good connections with my virtual cohort.

....Isn't the UofT grad stipend $15,000? Or is that what he's saying?

I read an interesting article online about "launching a public relations campaign" just prior to decisions/post decisions prior to funding.  The article recommended writing a focused letter to the DGS asking detailed questions about the program, teaching commitment, what it's like to live there, etc.  Has anyone written this type of letter and if so, was it successful?  I'm thinking of maybe doing it for the two remaining programs I really want to get into.

If anyone's waiting to hear on Yale's European Studies Masters program, I just received my decision. If they have a waitlist, I'm fairly certain I'll be passing it on.

Greetings fellow historians. I have watched this space compulsively for months now, but am posting for the first time. I just wanted to bring what is hopefully good news to some. I have been accepted but will be turning down the following programs for American History PhD: University of Minnesota, University of Indiana, University of Michigan, and University of Maryland. I've decided to attend UPenn in the fall. I hope the waitlists open up for you all!

Thank you! I hope it'll be grand. I've never lived in a city (or in the north) though, so that'll surely be a change for me. But I am very excited to work with my POIs, and the current students have been very kind to me in answering questions. Go Quakers!
