stillalivetui Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Hey ashiepoo, what are some things that drew you to UC Davis? I'm planning on applying there and would be nice to hear what stood out to you during the process. Thanks!

wacyeah Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Just registered my classes and got my student ID card finally!! Heimat Historian 1
ashiepoo72 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Actually it was the incredible number of cockroaches running around Davis along with all the allergens in the air that clinched it for me. jayray11 1
wacyeah Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 My goodness, roaches at Davis too? I'm seeing way too many roaches here in honolulu already
spellbanisher Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Forgot about the wild gangs of turkeys roaming the streets and the black widows crawling about at night.
ToomuchLes Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Wooo! Made it to Bloomington! I love how green the environment is and the architecture is so pretty. I wasn't expecting the humidity though but it's not too bad. Orientation is next week =D Drive carefully in Davis. Why did the turkey cross the road? Heimat Historian 1
spellbanisher Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Why did the turkey cross the road? To get in my belly.

Heimat Historian Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 I'm not sure I love this new layout... mvlindsey and ashiepoo72 2
tingdeh Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 So happy seeing y'all get settled! I'm so excited to get started, and so is my advisor--so much so that he's decided to send me abroad to do a preliminary archival trip already before the year starts. Ahhhhhhhh, this is so great. Chiqui74 Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 What's up with the new layout???? GSAS orientation is tomorrow; that's my first official school thing, then classes start the following week. I just bought the books for my classes and just looking at that list is exhausting! When do classes actually start for you guys?
dr. t Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 I know, it's freaky, right?I have orientation the 3/4th; classes start the 9th.
ashiepoo72 Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 I start on September 24th...one month from today!
Derpus Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 (edited) Lucky. I start on the 27th of this month.I've been in touch with my adviser through e-mails on summer reading in preparation for my own research and I have definitely encountered the "one word e-mail" of sorts. I remember spending an hour or two writing, re-writing, editing, and re-editing an e-mail to my adviser, only to get a single sentence back that he clearly wrote in one minute. Heimat Historian Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 I started classes yesterday. So far so good with both teaching and learning. Hope everyone has a great start to their semesters! I also still hate the new layout. Chiqui74 and ashiepoo72 2
ToomuchLes Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 I started today. No complaints or stress yet hahaThe layout will definitely take some time getting used to
ashiepoo72 Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 It's my daughter's first day of school today. After I dropped her off, I got this overwhelming sense I'm in the exact place I'm supposed to be, the only place where I can make it work well for both of us. What a good feeling. wacyeah Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Started my program from this Monday and I'm really glad I picked UHM as all my cohorts and profs are fantastic!!!! Gambaosaka1 and ToomuchLes 2
ToomuchLes Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 (edited) Survived my first week of classes and assignments, and now I'm in my second ^.^ I even managed to get a grader position for an undergrad course; nothing too glamorous but Im satisfied as a first yr MA haha. I feel the same way, wacyeah and ashiepoo72! My adviser, and grad mentor have been SO helpful and welcoming. In fact, the entire dept is great. I am very happy to be here, and I know I made the right choice by coming to IU. Edited September 1, 2015 by LeventeL Gambaosaka1 and catsandscarves 2
Gambaosaka1 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Been completely AWOL since my classes started. I I love this place: my advisor is nurturing and caring, the cohort and dept are ridiculously friendly and welcoming. Dept drinks every Friday and cohort drinks Wednesday's. Have language + 3 grad classes + AT'ing (helping/observing the TA) so my schedule is packed. anyone signing up for attending any conferences yet?
dr. t Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 I gotta toss an abstract at Kalamazoo for next year, thanks for reminding me! Gambaosaka1 1
ToomuchLes Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 IU has a major conference every year, sometime in the Fall. Unfortunately, its too late for me to sign up, but I'd love to participate in next year's conference; depending on the focused issue. If I have something presentable by the end of this semester, I'll look at other conferences in Spring/Summer 2016
Chiqui74 Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 I survived my first week!!! So far so good, but ask me again in a few weeks.
