ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Haha thanks for volunteering me! I'd love to have a get together! The logistics of getting us all in one central location are daunting. I vote for California! MollyTheMick 1
Fianna Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Is anyone planning on going to AHA in January? If nothing else, those of us who are there could do a meetup. That's probably the broadest conference where we'd have the most overlap. Â If nothing else, I was kicking around the idea of putting on a graduate conference in the next few years, provided whatever institution I'm at would be willing to sponsor it. Anyone want to be on the committee? cscruggs78 1
Heimat Historian Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Those are both great ideas Fianna. Count me in!
ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Me too!! Yay I'm excited! Let us get beers in January
dr. t Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 A three ring circus in Atlanta? I'm doing Kalamazoo and Leeds already this year, so I think I'll keep my sanity.
ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Umm who wouldn't wanna go to HOTlanta for some beers with fellow Gradcafe friends? Don't be a hater! Heimat Historian 1
kyjin Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Wow! Had you accepted an offer from a different uni at the time? At that point yes- I had decided a few days prior that even if I got in to Michigan, I really wanted to go to another program. Had about half an hour of buyer's remorse when I turned them down, but in the end I was (and still am!) extremely happy with my choice.  That said, if you're on a wait list that you are considering, do wait to accept another institution. It very well may be last minute that you find out if you get in.Â
navyblackmaroon Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I may go to the AHA if my panel gets accepted. If you haven't been to the AHA before, do it. It is a great opportunity to talk (and drink) with other historians.
dr. t Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 Umm who wouldn't wanna go to HOTlanta for some beers with fellow Gradcafe friends? Don't be a hater! Â Do Americanists have their own equivalent of Kzoo and Leeds? 3,000 nerds running around for a week?
Heimat Historian Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I plan on attending every year and working to build the connections necessary for a good job. That includes maintains good connections with my virtual cohort.
ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Do Americanists have their own equivalent of Kzoo and Leeds? 3,000 nerds running around for a week? That sounds like the pre-Twilight days of Comic-Con...ohhh the nostalgia... Aubstopper 1
dr. t Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 That sounds like the pre-Twilight days of Comic-Con...ohhh the nostalgia... Â Truer than you know. ashiepoo72 1
Josh J. Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 UNC was a fluke trust me! I almost feel guilty at getting accepted ...almost. Â Â Lol I know the feeling. I keep thinking I'm the beneficiary of a series of fortuitous mistakes. Â None of us are imposters! Â We all deserve it and will kick ass once we are in! JTE, jayray11 and ashiepoo72 3
JTE Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Fianna, count me in if and when I am accepted anywhere.
ellebe Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Now I really want to get in somewhere to join the fun! Â (Also to get going on project, follow dreams, land teaching job, etc... But meeting you guys is up there ) Â People waiting to hear from Toronto: if this has any influence on how they offer funding and TAships going forward, this may be a factor in the delay:Â http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/02/24/cupe-warns-teaching-assis_n_6746926.html
JTE Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I may also go to AHA. And I would also like to upvote ellebe, I certainly look forward to meeting the Grad Cafe History crew.
dr. t Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 (edited) People waiting to hear from Toronto: if this has any influence on how they offer funding and TAships going forward, this may be a factor in the delay: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/02/24/cupe-warns-teaching-assis_n_6746926.html  "Union president Fred Hahn says teaching assistants get paid $15,000 a year — $8,000 below the poverty line — and they must pay tuition on top of that."  ....Isn't the UofT grad stipend $15,000? Or is that what he's saying? Edited February 26, 2015 by telkanuru
Heimat Historian Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I read an interesting article online about "launching a public relations campaign" just prior to decisions/post decisions prior to funding. Â The article recommended writing a focused letter to the DGS asking detailed questions about the program, teaching commitment, what it's like to live there, etc. Â Has anyone written this type of letter and if so, was it successful? Â I'm thinking of maybe doing it for the two remaining programs I really want to get into.Â
Gambaosaka1 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I've already had a few so this isn't saying much, but I'm down like a clown for the AHA conference. SunshineLolipops, ashiepoo72 and catsandscarves 3
mvlchicago Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 If anyone's waiting to hear on Yale's European Studies Masters program, I just received my decision. If they have a waitlist, I'm fairly certain I'll be passing it on.
mmehistorian Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Greetings fellow historians. I have watched this space compulsively for months now, but am posting for the first time. I just wanted to bring what is hopefully good news to some. I have been accepted but will be turning down the following programs for American History PhD: University of Minnesota, University of Indiana, University of Michigan, and University of Maryland. I've decided to attend UPenn in the fall. I hope the waitlists open up for you all! poliorkein, Fianna and rmw 3
ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Congrats on making a decision, mmehistorian!! I bet you feel so relieved. Best of luck at Penn, and don't be a stranger! Let us know how much you love it there when you start next term
mmehistorian Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Thank you! I hope it'll be grand. I've never lived in a city (or in the north) though, so that'll surely be a change for me. But I am very excited to work with my POIs, and the current students have been very kind to me in answering questions. Go Quakers!
